E3 2012 Transfer Wii Save Data and Shop Purchases to Wii U

E3 2012 Transfer Wii Save Data and Shop Purchases to Wii U

E3 2012: Transfer Wii Save Data and Shop Purchases to Wii U Nintendo Life

Keep it flowing by Share: Nintendo's confirmed it's working on a system to transfer Wii save data, WiiWare and Virtual Console purchases from your Wii console to the new Wii U. The good news came during last night's developer roundtable in a Q&A section, a Nintendo producer saying: We are readying the system to be able to transfer saves and everything you've bought. The producer didn't say anything about the logistics of the transfer — so we don't know if you'll have to keep your Wii console to send your content to Wii U — but at least Nintendo's working on it. [source ] Share: Comments ) Do we know if that includes online save data. Great news even if it doesn't. Cool.
Not sure if I want to transfer my Wii save data to my Wii U or not, but it's nice to have that option available. This is good. I wonder if they make Miiverse available for the Wii Downloads. It would be fun and could interest more people in the titles without being too obtrusive.
I also wonder if you'll be able to decide exactly what you want to transfer. I mean there might be games you'd rather play with the GC controller or with 8 people. Again, why no mention of this during the main conference? The news after Nintendo's presentation has been better than the presentation itself. I'll only transfer my saved data if that means records of how long I been playing a game. Cause I'm picky like that. You had me at "new console", Nintendo. This and many other things are just icing on the donut. I am pleased that I should be able to successfully transplant my Wii library and game saves to my Wii U. It'll be as though my Wii's consciousness was being transferred to a new body, just like an Asgard's! That's good to know. I was worried that they might just give you the option to transfer downloads and not save data like when you transfer DSiware to the 3DS. I'll be keeping my Wii though so I'm not sure I'll transfer all of my games but its good to have the option and I'll definitely make use of it for a lot of my games.
Comments like that make me wish there was a "Like" button on this site! My Wii broke, how do I do a transfer????? Nice, then it will be a day-1 purchase for me. And I can start buy some more games on the old Wii This is information I wanted to find out during the E3 conference. Also, wonder if we'll be able to play our VC/WiiWare titles on the Wii U Gamepad....or will we be restricted to just playing them on the TV? Anybody else notice a distinct lack of Wii love this week? I know it's WiiU time, and 3DS as well, but nothing?
Can you guys at NL at least put up 1 of those upcoming game lists for the Wii owners? Off the top of my head:
Just Dance 4
Epic Mickey: Power of 2
Kirby Anniversary Collection
Sonic and Sega All-star Racing 2 (or maybe just 3DS, I forget) As for the transfer, I hate phrases like "We are readying". How long until this was available after the 3DS launch?
Great news though. Really really really should have been in the presentation. This is the stuff the gamers who watch these presentations want to know. We already know dance and exercise games are coming out, tell us stuff we don't know. YES! - Repair your Wii! On topic; HELLS YEAH! Hope eveyone valued that contribution. Finally they understand. Now they just need to make my purchases connected to one account, which is connected to both my 3DS and Wii U, and allow me to play VC titles on both. I hope you can use the Wii SD card to transfer sold my Wii.. Excellent! It will probably be like the DSi to 3DS transfer, as I don't imagine they're going to allow you to transfer the games to the Wii U without also removing them from the Wii, but I'm glad we'll get to keep our saves this time at least. I also hope we can transfer Nintendo points from the Wii Shop this time, but I doubt it if everything is going to be cash from now on. This was quite important for me for the following reasons. 18 x NES = £63
27 X SNES = £132.30
10 x N64 = £70.00
8 X Turbo Grafx = £33.60
9 X Mega Drive = £44.10
29 X WiiWare = £203.00
Total = £546.00 (roughly $845.60) Having spent all this money on digital games I really didn't want to have them languish on my Wii (which I intend on boxing up once I've played Rhythm Heaven Fever, which is released soon in Europe under the name Beat the Beat). I still haven't decided that the Wii U is for me, but if i do, it's reassuring to know that these games will be coming with me. THANK...GOD! I know! I don't want to start all the games from the scratch. Especially Super Smash Bros. Brawl, after all I successfully completed that game. I have two Wii console and I tried to transfer the saved game data and it won't let me. I'm scared right now, but Wii U worth our time. But my major issue, or probably everyone's issue, is that it doesn't play any Gamecube games disc.......unless I buy it from VC and start all over. I have about more than 20 Gamecube game disc and I can't start all over! I hope they make a method to transfer the game saves that don't transfer to SD card. I suspect that the Wii will have a massive update in store for it to allow this. Fortunately, the Wii-U can use the U-pad while your Wii is connected to the TV. I would transfer my Wii Ware games in a heartbeat, but I'm, not sure about the VC games. They may not look good on a HD TV. Maybe Nintendo will address that. Yes. Ok. Things are looking good with all the plethora of games the VC/WiiWare offers. Maybe a renaissance for some titles much like what happened to DSiWare on 3DS. : Most NES, SNES, Genesis, and especially the N64 games look fabulous through the 480p Component cables! Super Mario 46 and Mario Kart looks like roach when you connect an original N64 to HDTV set; compare that to the enhanced display resolution the 3D graphics get when played on Wii/VC; Peach's castle never looked so breathtaking... My first Wii is broken because it doesn't let the disc running, but my Virtual Console's working. Secondly, I have another one, but it has few of the game datas. Is it possible to transfer more than one Wii to Wii U? I have tons of Virtual Console. My question is, how does it work? I tried to transfer SSBB game data to another "new" Wii, but it doesn't let me. Please Nintendo, it's in your hand to impress me AND Nintendo fans. It'll be great if they can make a replica of Nintendo Gamecube controller, but also attached to Wii Remote and play VC Gamecube games with it. So It'll make life easier. But I don't want to buy some, cause I have tons of Gamecube discs. So I'm grateful that I still have Gamecube console, but I need to get a new one, it's worned out. Is it possible to find new Gamecube console? I wonder if Wii U also transferable to Gamecube data............ That's a good idea, because I have alot of VC games on my Wii.
MiiVerse was already confirmed for "3DS, WiiU, and "Later" consoles," by Iwata.
It's a nice thought, but it won't happen. How it is broken? The disc won't run or what? I AM SO HAPPY! i can finally play monster hunter again! Error Prevents Purchase Of ZombiU And Assassin's Creed III On Euro Wii U eShop Nintendo Life

Botched parental restrictions in EU to blame? by Share: Update: Despite testing this issue throughout the day we've now discovered, thanks to prompts from readers who've encountered the issue with some videos on 3DS systems, that this issue is caused by a restriction to accessing 18-rated content before a specific time. A test after 11pm UK time brought us the download page for ZombiU without an issue, suggesting that Nintendo is restricting the ability to download these games to specific — and very late — hours. Our systems don't have any parental controls so the issue remains a mystery - especially as it only affects games rated PEGI 18, not those rated 16. Have any of you encountered this error? Let us know in the comments below, and we'll endeavour to get details of a potential solution. Related Games Share: Comments ) This sounds serious. I hope everyone is okay. Thanks Thomas for reporting such breathtaking and serious news for NintendoLife's community. THAT PICTURE, THOUGH. You trying to finish me off or something? Thanks very much! (two can play the sarcasm game) We've had a few readers contact us who wanted to download these because it's actually a cheaper option for them so, yes, it matters to some people. So I can't buy an overpriced version of a game which really should be cheaper than a physical copy? How great... : Why do you have to be a jerk? To some people that matters just cause it doesnt matter to you doesnt mean its not news. If it doesnt matter to you than dont comment. What about eshop exclusive games that may happen to be rated 18+ (if such a game were to appear on the service)? I feel it's a pressing matter, even though I'm not going to rush out and buy Assassins Creed III online. Exactly - this could impact ALL 18 rated games on the eShop. I read an article earlier today about miiverse and eshop. For one it seems in Germany one can't post screenshots of ZOMBI U on miiverse. The other thing is - brace yoursleves - certain content (again in Germany) like 18+ games are only available after 10 pm. I'll try to dig up the link to this. I got this exact error message a few weeks ago when I tried to view an episode of Nintendo TV (UK) on the 3DS. That episode was rated 18 as well. Not sure if it fixed itself because I didn't bother trying again. No it hasn't. This problem has been on the 3DS eShop for months now. I hate having to wait until stupid o'clock to watch videos on the eShop. wait, what..?
seriously? i expect a fix for that on Wii U and 3DS asap
but if it's a problem on the 3DS eshop for months now... hmn... FIX?! -.- Damn silent screamer you set up there. Ok I had my suspicions but this pretty much confirms it. It's not a bug or a glitch. Nintendo has decideded to ban the viewing or purchase of all 18 rated content before a certain time each day to protect minors, regardless of the parental settings on the system. its calming as a person who plays games not to live over there on some forced rule So is 10pm the cut off time for all regions? Wow it's mazing Nintendo haven't infomed anyone about this! : I think it has more to do with the fact that most normal kids go to bed before 10 pm. Uk has a nine o'clock watershed for tv content, taking into account regional time differences this sounds right, although it makes parental controls pointless. We've updated the article as testing the Wii U eShop after 11pm in the UK allowed a potential download of ZombiU. My personal view is that this is utterly peculiar. If I give an age for my ID and submit to an agreement with the system, and wilfully leave all parental control restrictions off, I should be able to access 18 content whenever I like. In theory a child could bypass this if they have the system in their room, but that applies to absolutely anything. This seems over the top. What the... ?! I'm 30 an want to access whatever content whenever. This is so bad because I'm sure it's intentional and it will stay this way. On the other hand if Nintendo had a proper account system where people have to register the console to a real name with address and birthplace this would be no problem at all since the console would know if the "root" user is of legal age or not. This sucks in my household are no children that need forced protection! ... so we didn't get a response from Nintendo yet? I thought you guys already asked? that said, it seems silly — who knows, it could be some sort of bug in the parental control system that they didn't catch before it went live. I think it speaks more for the fact that Nintendo can't beat physical disc sales yet due to the crazy pricing in the eShop that this hasn't been a huge issue yet. thats so ridiculous
i mean - it'll be possible to play these games whenever i want to (well ofc.. otherwise that'd be pathetic) but why cant i watch a trailer, screens or purchase this stuff before 10pm?
thats so pathetic and dumb I'm surprised people are paying so much attention to this now - it's been bugging me for ages! Hopefully Ninty will pay attention to this feedback and rectify this ridiculous restriction. Yep! lets get physical, physical I want to get physicalllllll lets get the physical I had the error when trying to buy zombieU. Gave up abd bought tge retail copy instead. Stupid thing. Also have this on the latest nintendo tv 18 version. Still havent watched it because it wont let me, even after 11pm. Is this only for the UK? Either way, it's stupid. Nintendo, many of your fans have grown up, isn't it about time you did too? I mean, I understand what they're trying to do, but this is irrelevant. If a minor wishes to purchase an M rated game that badly, this sort of restriction won't do much. Any parent who wouldn't let their kid stay up past 10 most likely would keep an eye on what games they purchase. Likewise, any kid who can get away with buying and playing an M rated game most likely could be up past 10. In short, this restriction doesn't help much, it just is an annoyance. im thinking it has something to do with local broadcasting and advertsiing to minors laws, just like UK TV isnt allowed to use certain words before the kiddies are safely off to bed. Those laws are stricter in some EU countries (UK, Germany) than elsewhere. Buy in a real shop like the rest o' the world
Shock Horror! This is kinda stupid though. Why should one have to wait until a certain time just to download a game?! : i had a similar thought, but if so, wouldn't the same restrictions be in place for PSN and XBLA? and if that were the case, this would already be a known issue, wouldn't it? i could not find any information about a PEGI 18+ downloadable-purchasing watershed when i looked around to try and figure it out, not even on their own website. Nintendologic'd. Well I tried downloading both uplay and FIFA demo after I did yesterday's software update and now get an error code 111-9001. Has anybody else experienced this? This is sort of fail. I don't know of other e-shops with this problem. This seems... excessive. As a 23-year old who gets up at 6am for University, I need to get to bed at 10pm to get a proper 8-hours sleep. As do both of my parents, who also get up early, and are usually asleep well before 10. Obviously this does not apply to everyone, (and, let's face it, when was the last time I actually got 8 hours of sleep, anyways?) but this restriction seems to be promoting sleep deprivation in adults. I find this oddly unsettling. While this may prevent very young children from viewing mature content, I don't think a 10pm restriction will hinder most teenagers. Unless, as mentioned, they have strict parents, in which case they would likely have their video games monitored anyways... ...What...The...Hell?!?! Who's idea was this anyways? Sooooooo dumb! Who the hell sets a parental control in a console? Really. I think this is an issue that's rooted in a pretty pervasive culture in Nintendo: protect the children. I am the parent in my household, not Nintendo. I don't need them to restrict downloads or video viewing because I do that. I don't need them to dumb down chat functionality or online play in order to protect my kids either, because I do that too when necessary. While the average age of a NINTENDO GAMER might be under the age of 18 (I honestly don't know), the average age of a GAMER is definately in the 18+ range. Nintendo: STOP TREATING US ALL LIKE CHILDREN WHO NEED TO BE PROTECTED. Really, this is my biggest complaint with Nintendo. To it's defence, people can stop being lazy and actually buy it from the Shops where you can get it for anywhere between £41.99 and £54.99. But Nintendo should really sort this out,and this is peeing me off on the 3DS e-shop when I want to watch Nintendo TV News(the 18+ version). What Nintendo should do is go by the parent lock. I can access porn websites on the 3DS internet, yet I can't watch at video where, the most adult thing about it is,that there's bit in the video where it shows a bit of blood. Wait so, I have to visit the eShop after 11pm to buy it? Even though I have the correct parental controls? That's madness. The error message should be more forthcoming also... Ubisoft can't be happy. This is pretty naff. I was hoping to check out demos of it and got this message, though I didn't note the time. I do use parental controls because I have a nine year-old daughter who often gets up an hour or two before me on the week-ends and whilst I don't restrict chat, I don't want her even accidentally viewing something like a Zombi U trailer. However, I'm not under 18, so having me enter my PIN (which I need to do before running Samurai Warriors 3 - 16 rating - in Wii mode) would seem to suffice. Having to wait until after some arbitrary time is just stupid. "Nintendo rules in my house", says no parent ever. how do i download zombiu am 13 Leave A Comment Hold on there, you need to to post a comment...
Related Articles
What would U suggest for Mii? Game Over For THQ As Assets Are Purchased By Rival Publishers

Game Over For THQ As Assets Are Purchased By Rival Publishers

Game Over For THQ As Assets Are Purchased By Rival Publishers Nintendo Life

Sega, Crytek, Take-Two and Ubisoft pick apart troubled company by Share: 2013 hasn't had the best of starts for veteran video game publisher THQ. After at the end of 2012, the firm slid into bankruptcy just a few days later and as the new year dawned found itself in the position of having its assets - the studios and IPs it owns, essentially - to the highest bidders. That process has now started, and although buyers have been found for the vast majority of THQ's properties, the brand itself is all but dead. Here's how things are likely to go down, according to : Koch Media will buy Saint's Row studio Volition and the Metro IP rights after significantly outbidding Ubisoft. Koch is paying $22m for the studio (versus Ubi's offer of $5.4m), and $5.8m for the game rights (versus Ubi's $5.175m) Take-Two will buy the Evolve IP, for $10m (a rival offer was made by that game's developer, Turtle Rock, of just $250,000)
German developer Crytek plans to buy the Homefront IP - it was already signed up to develop a sequel to the game - for $500,000. Relic, developer of Company of Heroes and other strategy games, will go to Sega for $26.6m outbidding Bethesda parent Zenimax by $300,000 Ubisoft will take the South Park publishing rights for $3.265m and also buy, for $2.5m, the new studio THQ Montreal (which ended up employing some of Ubi's former creative staff from Assassin's Creed Sadly, no buyer has come forward for developer Vigil Games - although a letter from CEO Brian Farrell and president Jason Rubin sent to all employees states that efforts will be made to find one. The letter also stated: It has been our privilege to work alongside the entire THQ team. While the company will cease to exist, we are heartened that the majority of our studios and games will continue under new ownership. We were hoping that the entire company would remain intact, but we expect to hear good news from each of the separate entities that will be operating as part of new organisations. You can read the full letter over at . It's the end of an era for THQ, then; the company has a long () history of producing games for Nintendo hardware, having been a third party supporter since the days of the NES and Game Boy. It's never nice to see a company go down the pan, and hopefully all the people affected will be able to find secure employment. Will you miss THQ? Let us know by leaving a comment below. Just don't mention . [source , via ] Share: About Damien has over a decade of professional writing experience under his belt, as well as a repulsively hairy belly. Rumours that he turned down a role in The Hobbit to work on Nintendo Life are, to the best of our knowledge, completely and utterly unfounded. Comments ) Maybe Nintendo will step in for Darksiders. Fingers crossed. Well its interesting to see that Crytek got homefront. Thought I think Deep Sliver may have overpaid for Volition though it may be interesting to see where they may take the Red faction series. I hope someon buys Vigil and Darksiders That article almost made me teary-eyed. THQ was like an animal being ripped apart by vultures and then Darksiders was the meat nobody wanted... R.I.P THQ Somebody better buy Vigil and Darksiders
I was hoping for Ubisoft to buy it,but Nintendo should also buy it,they need more Mature IP's
I was most interested in where Darksiders went but nobody bought it.
Whats wrong with them? Too bad. But honestly, we'll still keep the majority of the good stuff (and hopefully someone will buy Vigil). I'm probably missing something, but all I can recall that this list lacks are the shovelware titles. Hmmm. I would've much preferred Ubisoft to get control of Volition, that might've at least upped the chances of the next Saints Row game appearing on a Nintendo platform but that looks unlikely now. The Wii U really needs a game to pull in the 'Grand Theft Auto' crowd (especially with GTA 5 coming soon) and the Saints Row games have always been very worthy rivals. I'd be surprised if this is the end of Darksiders also (both games were excellent), pretty strange that nobody's picked up Vigil yet. Any word on who's picked up the WWE game rights? I think Nintendo might balk at Saints Row, given just how lunatic the most recent game was. The Third is an excellent game though, and still one of the most entertaining open world action games out there. It arguably has the best vehicular combat of any title as well. Interested that Homefront is getting a sequel, and even more interested Crytek is involved. Homefront had an interesting campaign while it lasted, and I'd like to see the story continued. Seems unlikely it will come to a Nintendo platform though. WWF no mercy was THQ's best wrestling game in history, better than recent WWE games. Your face when no one truly cares about Darksiders. Let's be honest: Nintendo won't take it cause it's a bad Zelda imitation. Ubisoft hast Assasin's Creed and Prince of Persia. SEGA.....well, it's SEGA, I could see SONY buying it and turn it into another God of War So who got the WWE licensing or does WWE have control on who that goes to? Exactly what I was about to ask. Just please gawd don't let EA get a hold of it. I think they have more control over who the license goes to though and I don't think it was auctioned off with everything else. I never enjoyed the THQ titles I got. Why? Because I got the cruddy GBA games based off of T.V. shows or movies. and we all know the story with these kinds of games, and for those who don't, just look at Super Man for N64. Wait...is it true that 2k has the WWE license now? Sad to see THQ go. :/ : I think they are looking into it but other than that we dont know anything. Looks like 2k will be getting it. I hope they will do ok with it because I'm kind of having mixed bag feelings about it at the moment. I wonder who's going to take Darksiders though. This is really sad. I remember the old N64 WWF THQ days. Hopefully everyone lands on their feet after this. Looking forward to Crytek's Homefront. #10
I am not sure very many people share your opinion. >your face when
Is your avatar the face we will have?
I guess we'll all be smiling if his statement is proved true. Thou shalt not disparage Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! Remember Herman Farbage,
While taking out his garbage,
He turned around and he did see
Tomatoes hiding in his tree.
Now he's just a memory! Me too! Have you played The Incredibles or Finding Nemo? Hope somebody gets the Aidyn Chronicles liscense! D: SO GLAD EA didn't get anything. After playing Darksiders 2, I think Vigil games has some great talent and I hope someone picks them up. Looks like Patrice Desilets can't escape Ubi-soft. I hope Ubisoft buys Darksiders - that way, we'll be more likely to get the next sequel on the Wii U... (fingers crossed!) Superman 64 was made by Titus, not THQ. Anyway, I've never really gotten any of THQ's games, but I've known the name for so long that it's sad to see it go. They will be missed! Ubisoft, please, PLEASE release the stick of truth on WiiU Yeah, Vigil SHOULD be picked up by Zelda. While I have never played a Darksiders game, I think Vigil should help collaborate with EAD 3, mainly to help with production of the Zelda series. From what little gameplay footage I have seen, Vigil is a very talented developer, and Nintendo needs more talent, so... yeah, Dang 1989-2013
RIP THQ XD
I enjoyed the Saints Row series That would be great, only companies I'd trust with Darksiders (and Vigil Games) would be Nintendo or Sony. It'd be a nice move for Nintendo in the Western market and give them exclusive access to one of the best series in the industry. I would love to see Nintendo step up and purchase Vigil. I played a little of Darksiders II and I liked it. Glad someone bought South Park. I was really scared the game would get canned. Shameless advertising alert here. If you want to give THQ's best and brightest a shot, Amazon has a bundle of their games for PC available this week for $25. I own all but 2 of the games in the pack from a similar deal on Steam, and can say it's well worth it if you want to see what the hype is about. Really hoping all of the developers carry on well with their new publishers, as they are responsible for some of the best games of the modern day. (Especially Relic, really loving Relic...) I really hope Vigil and Darksiders can find a home. A great developer and a great, original IP... publishers, snap them up, quick! Also, I hope the WWE games will recieve a sorely-needed makeover. Sega getting Relic I find a really odd move. Like many, I'm concerned for Darksiders and Vigil. I was kind of expecting Ubisoft to take them on but I guess most publishers have looked at it and thought "we already have an RPG franchise". I just HOPE that, with 2K reportedly taking the WWE license and all that crap, that the WWE games have some big changes made to them with them in charge. It'd be nice to see someone that's NOT THQ try their hand at WWE's wrestling games. However, despite the fact that THQ rings that bell of nostalgia, I can't say I'm sad to see it go. It actually makes me happy in some way. I wasn't fully satisfied with them as a company for a while. Good riddance. South Park/Rabbids anyone? Wow. That's a shame. I remember THQ displayed on quite a few (it seems) old games that I was fond of. To those asking for Nintendo to take on Darksiders. It's not happenning. If it did though, you could probably look forward to Zelda becoming exclusively cartoon style. I don't really like having CoH with SEGA though.
Hope Vigil will find a new owner soon. Nintendo getting it for a cheaper price seems to odd though. I loved the company. the bankruptcy seems like an unfortunate accident to me. so many good games and no money to pay the bills. what is wrong with this world? Man, one of the first games I ever had on the Gameboy was The Flash by THQ. Shame this has happened. I only own and played three THQ games: de Blob 1, 2 and Deadly Creatures. They were fun. I'll buy the Darksiders studio for everything I have right now!
Seriously now, is there a minimum price they are willing to let them go? Nintendo didn't even have a looksee? I wonder if Reggie did want to take a look, but Nintendo Japan said "No.".
I mean, they could have gone for Vigil. Vigil working under Nintendos strict quality control could potentially put out Retro Studios quality stuff. What about de Blob?
Actually looking at the list of THQ games on Wikipedia it's kinda hard to pick out anything worth taking really. Still, Vigil working under Nintendo on various Nintendo projects would be cool. EDIT: And thinking about it, they could have gone for Patrice Desilets studio. Too bad, although I'll be honest I haven't played much by them since the WWE/WCW games on the N64. If no one buys the Darksiders franchise, there's seriously something wrong with the world. 2k has apparently acquired the WWE license. Goodbye THQ... Pretty varied history this publisher had. I could safely ignore the majority of their games, but the company was big enough that most people have probably bought something from them. I think they even distributed the Sonic Advance games here in the US. I wonder what will become of de Blob... WOMP. WOMP. WOWOWOWOWOWOMP.... Also, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (hehe). It's sad, honestly. They did so well when I was growing up. They started screwing up after about 2009. They will be missed by most.
There's going to be a second auction for currently dead/dormant IPs and back catalogue titles. Microsoft Almost Purchased Sega In Order To Compete With Nintendo And Sony

Microsoft Almost Purchased Sega In Order To Compete With Nintendo And Sony

Microsoft Almost Purchased Sega In Order To Compete With Nintendo And Sony Nintendo Life

How different things could have been by Share: Image: Casey Rodgers / Invision for Xbox A former Microsoft executive has revealed that the company was considering buying Japanese video game veteran Sega before it decided to create the Xbox console. Speaking to , Joachim Kempin said: There were three companies at that point in time, I think this was [Sony], Sega and Nintendo. There was always talk maybe we buy Sega or something like that. That never materialised, but we were actually able to license them what they call Windows CE, the younger brother of Windows, to run on their system [Dreamcast] and make that their platform. For Bill [Gates] this wasn't enough, he didn't think that Sega had enough muscle to eventually stop Sony so we did our own Xbox thing. There were some talks but it never materialised because Sega was a very different bird. It was always Sony and Nintendo, right? And Nintendo had some financial trouble at that point in time, so Sony came out with the PlayStation and bang! They took off, and everyone else was left behind. The landscape of the video game industry would have been a lot different today had that acquisition gone through. Sega might still be making hardware, but would be a totally different company. Would you have liked to have seen Microsoft buy out Nintendo's old rival? Post a comment to share your opinion. [source , via ] Share: About Damien has over a decade of professional writing experience under his belt, as well as a repulsively hairy belly. Rumours that he turned down a role in The Hobbit to work on Nintendo Life are, to the best of our knowledge, completely and utterly unfounded. Comments ) How interesting! Mind you I'm sure there are a few other "what might've been stories" out there in the history of the gaming industry. The PS1 and N64 ages were golden. Interesting. Might've been good for Micro, might not have, lol. Purchasing game studios has got to be one of the biggest wastes of money there is. All you get is the IPs. Staff aren't tied to a company and move about frequently. If you buy game developer X because they just put out a well received game, in 6 months there could no longer be ANYONE who worked on that game left. Given their abysmal treatment of Rare? I think Sega dodged a bullet. Thank God it didn't happen! Microsoft would probably have sucked the soul out of Sega like they did to Rare.
The sad thing is, Sega doesn't have a lot soul these days regardless... If anything Nintendo should buy Sega because most of their games on on Nintendo systems. I sure am glad that didn't happen. I like being able to play Sonic on my Nintendo systems. No way, I like the option of getting Sega games on various consoles. glad that did not happen I'm so glad Microsoft didn't ruin Sega... maybe = almost? i HOPE that never happens or there will be no sonic for nintendo WOW if only they buy Sega now think of the talent but then again look at rare. !!! Would have been interesting but honestly I am glad that they didnt. If they did we probably wouldnt have any of Sega's games on the VC like how Rare games wont come to the VC anytime soon. That would've been very weird then. Sega was just too cool for school to be seen hangin' with the nerdy kids looking at the way the xbox is designed that's not really surprising the first thing i thought of the first time i played it was " this controller is just like the dreamcast" but i am glad they didn't sega are doing fine as a third party publisher That is Bill Gate's Evil grin. This does not look good................. That's very interesting to find out. I'm almost glad that didn't happen. Sega is much more suitable as a stand-alone third party right now in the industry. I've always wondered what it would be like if Sega were still around in the hardware business. That might have been interesting since Sega is one of the only companies that has a history and characters as old as Nintendo. I would have liked to have seen that happen. What about if the Big N bought Sega now? Pretty sure this was strongly rumoured at the time. Aww. I would have liked to see a "Microsoft Alex Kidd 2000 Professional". Nah, Microsoft ruined Rare already. The Dreamcast was awesome I wonder if id still be a big sega fan had this happened, oh well not that i dislike sega now but funded by microsoft Sonic would probably be alot more relevant today then he is and i would love that Oh thank God Microsoft never purchased SEGA! Then I would be forced to buy Xbox! Then us Nintendo/SEGA fan-children would be screwed Yikes, Sonic is in bad enough shape as he is now (granted I've heard some of his latest games aren't too bad), but if Microsoft had full control? The Blue Blur quickly would have been utterly destroyed, if Banjo & Kazooie are anything to go by. Certainly interesting. I'm not sure if I would prefer Sega to be in Nintendo's possession, like a 2nd party developer, or not. Sega being a 3rd party dev, means that egg is not on any one co.'s face, when they make a bad game. On the flipside, when they make a great game, all the other co.'s have to accept the fact they don't own Sega's ips. after what they did to my beloved rareware i'm glad they didn't buy sega. Microsoft didn't destroy Rare, people. Most of the talent had already left around the time that... OH MY GOD WHY DO I EVEN BOTHER EXPLAINING THIS. Sega did a good enough job of ruining itself. It wasn't always Sony and Nintendo, but I could see how Microsoft would think that given the era they came into the race. I think it might have fared better for them if they bought Sega, they sure wouldn't have had to try and penetrate their own new brand into the marketplace. Kudos to Microsoft though, if I remember correctly, not a lot of people were open to the Xbox at first. Thank goodness this didn't happen. I like playing moblie Sonic games, multiplatform games etc. I can only imagine what could have happened to Sega's IP just look at Banjoe Kazooie, they kept pushing and pushing to change things until it was nothing like the original games. Nintendo should buy Sega and their IP's. Phantasy Star series, Sonic, Shining series, Skies of Arcadia, Virtua series, Streets of Rage, etc could be all Nintendo needs to compete with the other big boys. Sega used to be about expanding the market too but were a bit ahead of the times. The Dreamcast VMU is now fully realised with the Wii U gamepad. Casual games like Samba De Amigo released long before other music games like Guitar Hero took over. Typing of the Dead long before that Pokemon typing game, PSO being the first mainstream console multiplayer game, not to mention the DC being the first console having a modem built in as standard even if it was dial up. I'm not so sure Sega still have that spark about them any more, but if they did they would be a perfect fit for Nintendo's guiding hands these days. What are you talking about? The moment Microsoft bought Rare, Rare began to suck!!!!1 You didn't like Grabbed by the Goulies? I already knew this. I think Sega would have made Xbox better assuming they would have most of the control, or 50/50. I think it's best they make software for multiple platforms overall though, because Sega's a good company regardless of their past hardware mistakes. In order to compete with Sony mainly... I am so glad this did not happen. I would've hated it. I'm a die-hard nintendo fan, but I've always loved sonic as well. I mainly bought all of my sega systems just to play sonic. If this had happened it meant I would have had to buy microsoft's systems too! No thanks. I've never been interested in xbox. Microsoft ruined RARE. Microsoft could have easily RUINED Sega!!! Maybe Microsoft should buy Atari out of bankruptcy and see what they can do with it. I always wondered why the Dreamcast ran Windows CE. It always felt like an odd choice to me. Also the Dreamcast is pretty similar to the Xbox. In some ways, it was even more advanced than the Xbox. The Dreamcast wasn't the first online console, but it was definitely the first to really take off with it. Then it had downloadable content well before the acronym, DLC, was ever thrown around. Was able to surf the web and download game saves thanks to the web browser... and much more. I'll stop here before I make too long of a post, though! (Too late?) u keep thinking that if they didn't get rare we woulda had a new killer instinct game long time ago but of course like chuck norris Microsoft exists to ruin poop Microsoft would of gave sega no control sega would be the next rare if they were with Microsoft I'm glad they didn't. Otherwise I couldn't buy Sega games on the Virtual Console. Very cool and interesting! I wonder what the gaming world would be like if they did end up buying Sega, maybe a good Sonic game? I always wondered why this never happened as the Dreamcast was powered by Windows. I also kind of feel that the Xbox and 360 took what the Dreamcast started and ran with it as far as online is concerned. With that said, I'm glad the deal never happened and Sega never became what Rareware became. Now Sega games are enjoyed by all console companies, with the Wii getting some notable classics in the VC and Nintendo in general getting some awesome Sonic games and with PS3/360 getting some notable ports of DC and Saturn games and new games from Overworks, AM2 and a few other notable design teams. I do miss Sega systems though, I miss chances on unique games and not the same game with a new twist syndrome which seems to of become popular in this closing generation. Dreamcast for life! "Sega might still be making hardware, but would be a totally different company" No, it would be a Microsoft console (with Sega printed on it in tiny letters)! I am happy it didn't happen! Microsoft and Rareware where also a match made in heaven, remember?! I much rather see Nintendo buy Sega! Even Sony buying Sega would have been better then Microsoft buying it! glad this didn't happen - otherwise the sonic games for example wouldn't appear on the wii, wii U, 3DS, DS. sega is my second favourite games company after nintendo. i'd rather have nintendo buying out sega and making them a second party alongside retro, intelligent systems and HAL labs to name. i can imagine jet set radio, super monkey ball, skies of arcadia, bayonetta, space channel 5 and sonic, shining force, streets of rage, virtua fighter games alongside fire emblem, zelda, metroid, mario, kirby, pokemon etc. that would be one hell of a line-up!
I was thinking the same thing, there's no real evidence that them wanting to buy SEGA was ever anything more than a thought. Based on that logic, I almost bought microsoft when I thought about it just now.
Still I get the point of the article... a 'what if' scenario, similar to "what if nintendo had actually let sony finish that optical disc drive", or "what if they actually made a new earthbound game?" Sega already going downhill at the time, plus the Rare-ruining antics of Microsoft=a even worse Sega than what we have now. Still, it would have been bad if this happened for the industry as a whole. I kind of always considered the Xbox to be the spiritual successor to the Dreamcast. Read this if you want more on the Sega/Xbox story and what might have been: Typical microsoft/big business view point.
You see a market you want in, and rather than developing your own technology, you buy another company (or right to technology from a company) that is proficient in the market. It works on paper, but when you see what actually happens to the company, it falls victim to bureaucratic rule. A prime example of this path would be Rareware (as aforementioned by others). It can be argued Rare made some good games (if you like nuts and bolts or kinect sports) after being bought out, but I believe it that was just Rare in name. However, for Microsoft it was a good purchase because it prevented Nintendo from having any further Rare games (other than the ones currently in development). Anyways, I'm glad MS didn't buy Sega, becuase I dont have to buy a 360 just to own valkyria chronicles! I would be upset if Sonic only came out on 360. And miss out on Nintendo versions of Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations, Sonic Advance, etc., etc., ad nauseum...? NEVER! This Fan's Tragic Tale Highlights The Problem With Nintendo's Approach To Download Purchases - Talking Point Nintendo Life

When $200 of credit can't replace $400 of downloaded games by Share: As we've spoken about before, Nintendo's current attitude to downloadable games leaves quite a bit to be desired. The Nintendo Network ID system introduced with the Wii U is a step in the right direction, but the fact that purchases remain is, in this day and age, unacceptable. Rivals such as Sony, Microsoft, Apple and Google all allow purchases to be installed on other systems to the one they were originally made on — it's just that Nintendo seems to be a little behind the curve on this score. A story related to by Nintendo fan Jon (second name withheld) highlights the absurdity of this situation. Jon is a massive fan of Nintendo, and happily splashed $400 on downloadable games during the lifespan of his Wii console. When it came to upgrading to the Wii U, he didn't hesitate — he picked one up and transferred over all his Wii downloads. Sadly, the system Jon had was faulty, forcing him to return it to the store he purchased it from for a new one — a fairly standard reaction, one would think. However, what he should have done is . Because he didn't, when he switched on his replacement Wii U, he couldn't use his Nintendo Network ID, and therefore had lost $400 of downloads. Jon got in touch with Nintendo — after all, his Club Nintendo ID was proof that he had paid money for the games and had a right to have access to them — and was eventually credited $200 on the Wii U eShop. You don't have to be an expert at maths to see that figure is half what Jon was really owed, and to make matters worse, he couldn't re-purchase the games because none of them are available on the Wii U eShop yet — they're all on the Wii Virtual Console and WiiWare marketplace, which uses a different digital currency. You could argue that Jon was stupid for returning his Wii U when Nintendo has made it clear that system transfers can only be done by them, but that's beside the point; this kind of thing simply should not be happening in this day and age. Kotaku contacted Nintendo for the official line, and was told: Different companies take different approaches to preventing the resale of downloadable games. Anyone who experiences any issues with a Nintendo system or game should contact Nintendo Customer Service at 800-255-3700 or . Once a system has been sold or traded in, and the system is no longer in possession of the original owner, the downloadable content cannot be recovered. It's all very well saying that different companies take different approaches, but the fact is that most of Nintendo's rivals seem to be aware that allowing users to tie their purchases to a transferable account rather than to the hardware itself is the proper thing to do. When you're expecting people to spend as much as $59.99 / £49.99 on a retail download, you really should give them some kind of assurance that they're not suddenly going to see that money evaporate before their very eyes in the event of their system being stolen, or becoming so broken that the data cannot be retrieved. Another key thing to remember is that people are more likely to spend cash on downloads if they know they will have access to them for the foreseeable future. What are your thoughts on Jon's story? If you're sitting on hundreds of dollars of downloads, do you ever worry that you could lose it all? Or do you think that Nintendo has the right idea, and linking purchases to a single device helps reduce "the resale" of downloadable games? Vote in the poll and leave a comment to let us know.
Should Nintendo downloads be tied to a single piece of hardware 558 votes
Yes%No%I honestly don't care either way% Please to vote in this poll. [source ] Share: About Damien has over a decade of professional writing experience under his belt, as well as a repulsively hairy belly. Rumours that he turned down a role in The Hobbit to work on Nintendo Life are, to the best of our knowledge, completely and utterly unfounded. Comments ) Ouch. Poor guy, that sucks. I bet we can go for a perfect 100% on the poll for "no". It's pretty poor infrastructure that's for sure. I read another comment, either here or on another site, from someone who had the exact opposite experience - Nintendo issued them with a full refund and a $50 credit on top as an apology. This is a rare occurrence and a very unfortunate one at that, and I really think Jon should contact Nintendo again and see if they're willing to do any more - and if not, lodge a complaint. It should also be pointed out that the notion that purchases are tied to the hardware hasn't really been confirmed to be the case - Nintendo's said before that they're tied to the Nintendo Network ID, and although NNIDs can't be transferred between systems yet, that will be possible following a future update, which could very well be either the spring or summer update we've been promised. Presumably, your Nintendo eShop and Wii Shop Channel data will move with, otherwise there'd be no point in them at all. And yes, he should have contacted Nintendo immediately, not returned it and had it replaced. That much is blatantly obvious, because then they would just have transferred everything to a new console. So, yes, that was a very stupid thing to do. i just think that sucks im glad i decided to keep my wii and games. like john ive spent hundereds of dollars on the virtual console, and all that info being lost would infact drive me crazy. after reading this article, i have decided to never transfer my wii data to my wiiu Nintendo doesnt reimburse my hard-copy games either if they should get stolen. Jon is a dummy Worst mistake by Nintendo, they NEED to change it, there's just no other way. i knew one of you guys would report on this news few days ago lol While I don't think downloads should be tied to a single piece of hardware, it was Jon's fault for not understanding the circumstances ahead of time, especially 6 years to understand it, that Wii downloads are tied because that is how it was designed. There was no "user account" with those, so they had to be device-based. I'm not worried about the WiiU at all, but i'm worried about the fact that some big names (sony/microsoft) might be throwing a lot of money at various places to have them help defame the WiiU. All this bad news and barely any good news all over the internet makes me think this, when what it all really should be about is the great titles that are almost out like monster hunter, smash bros, mario party, mario kart... the list goes on and on and onnnnn.. Something very fishy is going on with the WiiU reporting. Can we all agree that this is one more reason that Wii Shop/Wii U eShop and Wii Menu/Wii U Menu are both points that should be merged with one another?
Anyway, here's my stand on this: he really should have contacted Nintendo first. The strange thing is the service that he got, which seems sub-par for the company to me. I have no strong feelings one way or the other about that.
Cloud or purchase-tie services don't bother me as I will not buy a new system for years, if ever. However, I voted "No" because this lack of more quick digital buying is really what Nintendo's online services lack in the most. If general communities are added to Miiverse they pretty much have that down pat, but a ton of people would like to transfer buys around, and for good reason- they're very behind with it. I'd be pretty disappointed too were I interested in using that. I personally would have gone straight to Nintendo lol That man should have researched what to do beforehand. Google is not hard to use... What a "tragedy." Funny thing about this Web site the past week or so ... I can't quite put my finger on it. It seems a bit ... red ... no, that's not it ... blue ... noooo ... oh look at that, my shirt has a stain on it. This happened to me originally with the DSi and 3DS. I believed that having the DSI tied with a Club Nintendo account would give me access to my downloads later on my 3DS. Believing this, I traded-in my DSi for the 3DS and when the eShop opened, I was surprises that this wasn't the case. I didn't cared for some years but then I thought, what if I call nintendo so they can transfer the game to my 3DS system, so when I called Nintendo, they didn't credited me with eShop money or transfered my DsiWare games, but instead they sent me a copy of Paper Mario for 3DS... They however, can check your Club Nintendo account for your downloads and know how much you've spent.
Maybe because there isn't any good news right now. Probably won't be till e3, either. Mario Kart, SSB, and the like are just names right now. Edit: Oh, and MicroSony don't need to spend money to hurt the Wii U. Nintendo has done a pretty good job of doing that themselves as of late. With stupid attitudes like their's, it's no wonder people rely on piracy. I love Nintendo but system tied software is one of the dumbest, most idiotic decisions in the entire industry. It's a good reason why I haven't transferred my DSiWare and Wii downloads yet. Surprised people are actually voting yes,I don't get it. I honestly do not care. I logged back on just so I could give my opinion on this, and here it is: I like the tied to one console system. You heard me, I LIKE IT. Why? Just think about it: what if some guy hacked into your NNID and stole ALL of your games, and no one could do a thing about it? This sort of thing happens all the time on PSN and XBL, so a full account system has it's own problems. I prefer the one to a system method, but there should be a choice for those who want to be secure. While I'm no doubt gonna be thrown flames at for this, it's my honest opinion: my mother once had a windows account YEARS Ago and it was hacked, so she lost all of her apps and couldn't get them back. So that's why I prefer the current method. As for the guy's choice? Dumb. He should have called NOA to get a repair, if his system ever broke anyway (Since I hear that a few of these brick reports are fabricated), instead of returning it. That's his fault. The quicker Nintendo alter their online accounts system the better in my view. In this day and age your Nintendo network ID should be universal across all Nintendo platforms, with all purchases tied to your network ID like on PSN. In Jons case I don't think he had read the Nintendo fineprint as you get a warning the first time you set up your network ID. Anyways stop with the negative stories and find a positive own to report!! Synopsis: Someone made a mistake, blamed Nintendo's policy, got half his money back, became a tragic figure. Reminds me of a guy on another forum who heard his Wii downloads could be transferred over to the Wii U then sold his Wii console a few months before buying his Wii U. Then complained about not being able to transfer the games. Apparently he was ignorant of the fact that Nintendo told us to keep our Wiis in order to be able to do the transfer. Or he sold it before that was announced. Although I'm in support of a change in Nintendo's policy, it is up to the CONSUMER to inform themselves before making purchases. The policy is online and has been since launch day; he should have looked into it before he even purchased a Wii U. I still haven't transfered my Wii stuff to Wii U. And last I checked I had more than 2000€ worth of downloads (200+ downloaded VC and WiiWare games). They're now resting on my unplugged systemfaulty Wii, until - hopefully - a better solution is offered. The broken transfer (LostWinds bug), games tied to console, the crappy Wii mode, two different shops, it's such a mess!! Where is the freaking update?? Is all hope lost? Will Nintendo ever listen? I feel like the more I support them the more they laugh at me. It's disappointing because Wii's backward compatibiliy was pretty great and it looked bright for the future of download games on a Nintendo console, and I never thought they would screw it up this much! "Tragic"? Really? We're really stretching the lower boundaries of our vocabulary definitions today, aren't we? It's unfortunate and certainly indicative of Nintendo's bizarre stance towards online marketplaces, but I'm not exactly sure what certifies this as a tragedy. Did I miss the part of the story where Iwata dropped by and murdered a kitten or something? "A story related to Kotaku by Nintendo fan Jon". I find this term been used rather loosely for a long time now. If he were a massive fan like they said, he would of keep up with the latest Nintendo news including Wii U and it's feature. I had the same problem with my Wii U but my first instincts was to call and send to Nintendo knowing what it can and can't do, plus they're good at what they do; to each its own. On that note I vote "I don't care either way" since it won't affect my current standing with my downloads and systems. To be honest, there is absolutely no excuse or reason why Nintendo can't just use your Club Nintendo ID as proof of ownership. The infostructure is already there it's just not being used. At any given time I should be able to download any game that my Club Nintendo account shows I've purchased, on any system that is also linked to that same Club Nintendo account and is capable of running the game. This should also include retail purchases of games that are also now available in digital format. If you think that's a bit radical and overboard it's not. It's a current industry standard. For instance, I can do exactly what I've said above for ANY game on my Steam account, including ones that I originally bought at retail such as Portal, XCOM, Half Life and such. I have no sympathy whatsoever, he should have contacted Nintendo directly and they would have transferred them straight to a shiny new Wii U for him under his warranty. Anyone who spends that sort of money should look into this first. this happened to me with my 3ds and mario 3d land 3dsxl. i spent around £50 on my 1st 3ds, then traded it in at game for the the white 3dsxl, but kept my original 3ds sd card. but when i tried to copy my games from my 1st sd card to the other it just wouldn't work! ive looked online and tried what people say but it just wont work. now im scared that if i mess with it too much ill lose my mario 3d land that is built into the new sd card. anyone had the same problem or have any ideas? Doesn't matter to me, I would've gotten in touch with Nintendo, because I'm just worried about stuff like that. I mean, I probably would've known better, since I've read lots about Wii U. Feel bad for Jon. But seriously, I wish I could put all Wii game saves on an SD card so I could play them on other Wii consoles. Also, I wish I could play WiiWare and Virtual Console games that I own on another system via SD card. But it doesn't let me, because it all has to be tied to one system. In the Wii's case, I don't mind too much because I usually just bring the Wii itself to a friend's house, because it's so small that I actually can. I wish it still had the handle on it like the GameCube...lol
The best thing to do would be to contact Nintendo. Call them at 800-255-3700.
Seriously, it's the best thing you can do. Their service is fantastic, so I'm sure they'll help you out! Of course, if Nintendo were to do just what I said above it would most certainly cut into Nintendo's profits. How?? Well if my Club Nintendo ID showed that I had purchased the original Legend of Zelda game way back when it first came out then by industry standards they wouldn't be making any more money off of me when I downloaded it to other systems down the road. This I suspect is the main reason that Nintendo keeps tying purchases to systems and not accounts. Nintendo loves to resell it's old games on new systems. It's set up so that every new system they kick out will have a whole backlog of old classics that they can trickle out and make money on. At the end of the day it's all about money and being able to resell the same game over and over again every so many years. I still love Nintendo. But some of their business practices leave much to be desired. Being a Nintendo fan always feels like the person who bets on the horse that always falls at the jumps you thought were the easiest. And when it makes a brilliant sprint to the front it misses another easy jump. Nintendo needs to learn a thing or to from Steam. The Steams store and there online approach is flawless. The only right answer to the poll is "no", of course, but it's not a very big deal for me. If you own more than one Wii U, though, the issues become very apparent. Never take it back to the store........ nintendo coulda transferred everything over, they should either advertise that if its broken in any way send it to Nintendo, or give the distributors acsess to transferring the data, cause dang that sucks, Isnt nintendo planning on changing this later on down the road? Other than the save game data being lost, Nintendo has essentially given this gamer $200 for new games, which seems like a great deal to me. Sure, maybe I would want to own and replay some of the many lost titles, but I wouldn't even want to redownload all $400 worth of games, some of which I wouldn't ever need to pick up again. Now this gamer has a choice to get anything in the Wii U store, which will eventually retain many of the Virtual Console games that may have been lost. It still does suck though. But, I kinda wish I was the one who had made that "mistake". I don't plan on selling my Wii U, but if my Wii U were to break beyond repair or get lost/stolen, then what? I know some of you are worried about the hacking problem, but that's why we have to keep logging to our e-mails and such to make sure that stuff like that doesn't happen. And if it does, then we contact the network and say "Hey, something is not right here." Like NL said: in this day and age, it's inexcusable. 1) $200 for new games, sounds like a great deal to me too.
2) Nintendo downloads should not be tied to a single piece of hardware, its like digging their own grave Sorry I dont feel for the guy cause he was stupid. He should have contacted Nintendo right away when his console stopped working not the store that he purchased it from. I dont blame Nintendo its the guy he learned his lesson the hard way and now I doubt he wont do it again. i voted NO ! ive been saying this for months now, why does nintendo do this ?? its because they want you to buy all of the same games OVER and OVER look at all the 3ds virtual console games we already have that we have seen on the wii 5-6 years ago. iwata needs to go if he thinks this is acceptable.i dont know what i would do if this happened to me lol Downloads should be tied to a single person not console. I shouldn't be able to give out account info and effectively my games (a friend of mine does that on steam), but I should be able to get my games back if my console breaks. i bet taskui voted yes LOL. Exposed This is one of the main reasons that I'm very iffy about buying a Wii U until Nintendo removes the limitation of your account being tied to one system. Nintendo should be able to do this with ease. After all, Sony and Microsoft did this eons ago. Nintendo also needs to make the 3DS account based without tying it to a piece of hardware and remove the limit on system transfers (or at least increase it to a much higher number than five for God's sake). Your Nintendo account should not be tied to any piece of hardware, and both your Wii U and 3DS should be connected to it. If either of those devices ceases to function or get stolen, then you'll have to jump through a lot more hoops than what you would have to do if a non-Nintendo device bites the dust. There's no excuse for this, no matter what Nintendo says. I know that they like to do things their way, but it's always not the right way. And to me, $200 is still a poor apology. It only covers half of what that guy purchased and it's not even in the same funds format as the VC and WiiWare games that he bought. Don't tell me the guy was stupid and got what he deserved either. He shouldn't have to go out of his way to call Nintendo and send his console in because of a faulty system if he doesn't want to. Consumers should have options. This is probably one of the reasons why the Wii U is currently getting such horrible third party support too. Nintendo has been attempting to stay ''old-fashioned'' since the days of the N64, and it harmed them more than anything else. But the thing that baffles me the most is that people actually voted ''yes''. What? Do you want Nintendo to remain backwards and not make any progress? This is one of the reasons I don't download many games to my 3DS or my Wii U. I download a few, and then usually games that only are available for download. I mainly get the games as physical copies (I even pay more than the download price just to get the physical copy). If I knew I could re-download the games if the hardware broke I might feel differently. very true i fully agree with skywardlink. all the other gaming companies do the same Microsoft,Sony,Apple, steam just to name a few so why on earth does nintendo have to be different ?? nintendo will never fix this issue as long as iwata is in charge because all the decisionions in nintendo go through him.we had it with the wii,dsi and 3ds so thats from 2007-2013 this issue has still not been fixed or even adressed. i bet if you went up to reggie in E3 and asked him i bet he wouldent give you an answer and run away Terrible move by Nintendo, it's not like it can't be changed, though, but it doesn't really bother me eitherway, as I can't think of the last system videogame system I had that broke... Or got rid of in any way. "Once a system has been sold or traded in, and the system is no longer in possession of the original owner, the downloadable content cannot be recovered." No, but if it has been sold or traded in then anyone else who buys it has access to that content if it hasn't been deleted. Do Nintendo really not see that potentially this approach costs them as many sales as it saves? I thought Nintendo makes it VERY clear you need to contact them to fix any problems on a device that has digital purchases on it. Jon made a mistake, it just happened to be a huge, tragic mistake. This doesn't change that Nintendo's whole handling of digital releases in general is so ass-backwards. The system comes with a year warranty for a reason. It dawned on me the reason why Nintendo HQ has quit never been affected by such negativity over all those years: because thank God most of them only speak Japanese. This is this guy's fault. Any person with half a brain would read the instruction manual. It explicitly says that you shouldn't return it. The only logical explanation for people voting "yes" is that they misread the question and meant to choose "no". Seriously, how can anyone be so naive? - I agree with everything you said, this is one of the reasons I'm iffy about getting a WiiU as well. I even feel a bit nervous about buying the occasional game on the 3DS eshop. Compare that to Steam where I have no worries whatsoever. On that note I vote "I don't care either way" since it won't affect my current standing with my downloads and systems. What about those people who do have problems? Nintendo Online = 1 Step forward, 2 steps back -_- feel for your loss Jon. Nintendo need to up their online/download game (no punt intended). Who in their right mind voted yes? Haha. if he's still a nintendo fan after that, I'ld be shocked! Here's someone who shared the same problem, but got more positive results that is very awesome of them to do that, but the way they do things is still very inconvient lol just link all peoples downloads to a email account like psn/xbla does, it just makes more sense that way Eh, I don't care much, I take good care of my crap anyways. I don't think I'm quite to the $400 mark but I do have at least hundreds put into VC games on the Wii that have now been transferred to the Wii U. When I got my Wii U, I pulled my old Wii out of storage (I had a new one, but the original had all the VC titles on it) to transfer the games. I found out it would no longer turn on. I called Nintendo support and they confirmed that the system had to power on to complete the transfer, so I was SOL with a broken system. The options I had were basically to lose all those purchases, or to send the Wii in for repair. I was told the standard repair fee was $80 plus shipping. Given the circumstances, the technician cut that in half and I paid $40 plus shipping to repair the system and I did eventually get my games transferred. That's not a horrible outcome (certainly not as bad as Jon's example above), and I did appreciate the technician being very friendly and ready to give me a 50% discount because of the inconvenience, but things like this just shouldn't be happening today. If Nintendo had a unified online account that my stuff was tied to, and their systems respected that, none of this bad PR would be happening to them. You'd think they would fix the system rather than lose business to their competitors who implemented better models years ago. no they shouldn't be tied to a single console i think they should do what sony is doing with the playstation 3 and locking your games to 2 consoles but allowing you to deactivate and reactivate the consoles on the internet and thus alowing you to redownload the games on a new console I have created a web site to express my disappointment and concern about how I was treated by Nintendo UK and Nintendo of Europe. Disappointment because as a loyal Nintendo customer I was not allowed to re-download my ambassador games to my new 3ds after my original 3ds was stolen. And concern because Nintendo have refused to delete my personal information from the stolen console.
You can see my site here........
Nintendo should consider revamping their user accounts system since their downloads earnings are slowly increasing. And if Apple, Steam, Microsoft, Adobe, and Sony lets users tie purchases to their user accounts, those users have new expectations of how purchases should be handled. Regardless of what's keeping the company from enabling account-based purchases, this poll makes it clear that things might need to be rethought. Only 255 votes?? Lol, this poll's probably biased towards people who want transferable purchases. I lost my Ambassador 3DS. It's a really, really sucky feeling. i buy for my ps3 i can play games on my vita,i have lost vc games on a broken wii though i could just add them to my new wii no chance i had to pay for the same games all over again, now i keep all vc on memory card but its still tied to one console transfered games to wii u cant play them on my wii now.nintendo is years behind sony and xbox with anything online at all.multiplayer is a complete joke but thats for another time, nintendo give me a call if you want things to be done right. : Actually if you must know I voted I honestly dont care either way. I know that the download stuff is linked to a console rather than a person so I know what to do instead of whine and moan like you all. I agree that the word "tragic" is exaggerating things. Another article probably netting lots of comments. Not surprised here.
Please keep your comments focused on the article at hand, thank you! — TBD I agree that purchases should not be system tied. If you buy a second Wii U and register it at Club Nintendo, that should give you the right to redownload all the stuff you bought on the first one free of charge, as you are proving you own both consoles. They can limit it to two so it does not get abused, as they seem to fear that. yea sucks for the man he should of done research before he did it It's unfortunate that this guy didn't contact Nintendo rather than go back to the shop. I would have thought it pretty obvious that if you have downloadable content you need to contact Nintendo about getting it transferred before doing anything else as was the case with the Wii. Nevertheless this does need to change and I'm surprised that Nintendo didn't do something about this during the Wii's generation. Apple did it to ensure that people who buy Apple hardware are able to upgrade and users are actively encouraged to get the latest and greatest kit. With all the special edition Wiis Nintendo has released over the years not being able to get fans to upgrade because downloadable content or save data with online components cannot be transferred seems like a big missed opportunity that shouldn't be repeated with the Wii U. I know that if Nintendo releases a new model with better system specs a couple of years from now I'd potentially be interested in making the upgrade, but only if there's a straightforward way to transfer my NNID from one system to another. There's a couple more updates planned for this year so hopefully one of them will address this shortcoming. Whats with all the Nintendo bashing and hate lately ; We have two Wii U's at our house and I'm 110% HAPPY with the system- I AGREE with Jon was dumb he knew better I think it was Awesome of Nintendo to give him something back they are a Company first and foremost, I think the Wii U has some kick-Ass features to it and being a gamer I can say I have yet to see a Perfect system I mean could there even be such a thing ? LOL It's still a poor system even if you use the argument that he should have known better. My younger brother had his 3DS stolen from him. So he's lost all the games he's purchased as well as his ambassador titles. i agree he should of done research i don't think it hard to do research. This Jon should have known to contact Nintendo with his problem. My Wii still had my account when I got it back from Nintendo repairs, because I accidentally laid it down flat when it was vetical with a disc in it. People should know by now that they need to contact Nintendo first, unless they just bought it, and it has NO purchases on it.
Just think of a broken Nintendo console this way: You don't just replace your body everytime you get sick or break a bone, you heal, but you're not getting younger. You don't just replace your body with another one everytime yours isn't doing well.
There were ways to avoid this. We get it, Sony, Microsoft, and Apple have account sharing/transferring, and Nintendo doesn't. Consider yourselves lucky they let you do that, otherwise there would be 1000x more stories than this for those easily breakable, hardware updatable consoles. Even if your console is stolen, they have ways to get your games back, otherwise if you had the console, you would transfer, right? Take care of your stuff, repair or replace your stuff through Nintendo. End of story. E-mail addresses and accounts can be a pain, too, so that's not a good way to link an account. It was a pain in the neck for me when Microsoft changed my e-mail account without telling me, and voided my Xbox Live. PSN getting hacked for a couple months made some people lose thousands, all because they need every little bit of info to verify your account, which can leave you open to future problems if that happens again. No system is bullet proof, and those account systems are a ticking time bomb with no apparent time limit, Nintendo's account system is a bomb you set off yourself. At least 17 people voted YES?? :I
#44 ''Downloads should be tied to a single person not console.''
To an extent I agree. But how would that work, and be controlled? Who voted Yes?? Bring out the banhammer! Nintendo should really change this. If they want to be taken seriously they have to keep up with the times. Nintendo is extremely stubborn though. However, this was JON's mistake. It takes literally 6 minutes if that for him to find out the info for what to do in his situation. He should've looked up what to do. I'm sorry but I wouldn't want to lose $400 or even $200 just like that. I can understand why they put it on the eshop but they really should have provided the full amount of credit! Even if half was on the eshop and the other half came in the form of Nintendo Points. In any case... Ouch! yes, i have a lot of downloads from vc, i hope i never lose them "You could argue that Jon was stupid for returning his Wii U when Nintendo has made it clear that system transfers can only be done by them...". Yes, I can argue that Jon is stupid, and I will: Jon is stupid. Either that, or he's lying, and this was a way to try to get all of his games a second time on a new console. My experience with Nintendo has been fantastic. When my old Wii's disc drive stopped working (I voided the warranty by trying to fix it) Nintendo told me they would transfer my VC licenses onto a new system if I so wished. I bought a new Wii, sent in the broken one and they shipped them both back to me with all my VC games ON BOTH CONSOLES! I now have two Wii's with huge VC libraries on them. While the problem is being worked on for Wii U downloads, I doubt they'll be able to integrate Wii downloads into the eShop as easily. As it is with upcoming VC, you're getting a completely new copy for a small fee that is in the Wii U format and retaining the Wii version, rather than upgrading from Wii to Wii U. It's been this way for 6 years, everyone knows about it. Secondly most electronics clearly state "DO NOT RETURN TO RETAILER". if they did make it untied. wouldnt i be able to give my friend an eshop title, when im done with it? : Actually most consumer electronics manufacturers will instruct you to return it to the place of purchase within the first 30 days or so; only leveraging the warranty after the point when you could normally get a refund. At least that's been my experience in the UK. I'm really glad you guys decided to run this article. I'd read this yesterday and it really bums me out that this happen to this guy. I sold off a Wii with over $200 worth of downloadable material on it and I've not purchased much from Nintendo's online stores ever since. Worst idea ever and why I have not purchased anyhing on the e-shop. The fact that Nintendo donate him $200 out of their own pocket to correct for his mistake is actually more generous of them. Everyone knows that if the system is faulty, the best thing to do is send it off to Nintendo. Also of the $400, $200 of them titles were probably Nintendo published/associated titles, Nintendo can't refund lost funds for games he bought which is not associated/published by them meaning values for 3rd party and indie-dev games like Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, Mega Man 9 & 10, Sonic 4: Episode I, LostWinds, the StrongBad series, etc., cannot be refunded. Nintendo's approach is utterly antiquated. As others have said, by tying purchases to a single piece of hardware, they can compel repurchase of the same games every time a new console/handheld is released. I bought Final Fantasy VII and Persona on my PSP. If I get a Vita I will be able to redownload them both free of charge. I can also redownload all my purchased PS1 classics on my PS3 free of charge. Making the consumer jump through as many hoops as possible if their console breaks isn't a particularly persuasive defence, especially given consumer rights in the UK. Nintendo must at least match what their competitors are doing with regard to user accounts given the wider challenges they face in the console market. Nintendo needs to fix this. My house got burglerized in 2006 shortly before Wii launched, and my mom lost a lot of silver jewelery. I had my GameCube stolen as well. All this shortly before the Wii came out. I eventually went to second-hand game stores and bought back a lot of the titles I'd lost, well at least my favorites. And Game Cubes were super cheap around the time. If that happened to us again with my Wii-U (which has boatloads of VC titles I transfered from Wii, including a few that were discontinued, like DK Country) as well as my 3DS, and I lost all my VC purchases, I would be very upset. While it's great that I still have many of the original consoles to play games on, it's convenient to play games on Wii, and some are rare, imports, or hard to find. I already bought some of them twice (once on cartridge, once on VC), and if I lost the all and had to repurchase, I'd probably say "screw it" and go back to retro gaming.
You probably need to go get some better security for your house though, you never could know, if it happen once it'll likely happen again. Other than that Nintendo did mention that they are trying to implement a similar approach to this at a later time this time. They need to do this already. If you have an in-store warranty, a lot of times they ship your 3DS off before you get your new one - you can't do a transfer. I feel bad for this guy. One of the reasons I've for-goed VC collecting (after purchasing 40+ games) for the original titles. It costs more but so worth it in the end. This is my problem with Nintendo. I still love the games, but stupid things like this simply should not happen in 2013. D -, must try harder! 200$ is enough to engage a lawyer. Go for it Jon!
It was actually quite the opposite with me. I sold alot of my old cartridges to go digital. I just can't stand a cartridge anymore.

His case would be laughed at, because it tells you in the eShop, and the system setting to not do exactly this. We would have seen more cases against Nintendo, or any company for that matter if everyone sued. Even McDonalds lost millions to a lady who got 3rd degree burns from spilling coffee on herself, just because the coffee cup didn't say 'CAUTION: CONTENTS MAY BE HOT'. That's not the case here, because Nintendo tells you not to do exactly what Jon did. putting eshop games on memory card is safest bet.as for this guy losing money on eshop most of us have been caught out losing some games chance you take buying downloads long live the disc. Poor decision on the guy's part. However, I will say that Nintendo should have the accounts like PSN and XBL. I, personally, don't have a problem with the single-system approach since it prevents piracy. I welcome the change, but it won't bug me if they don't change... Nintendo's backwards thinking on this dramatically impacts the money I spend on the eShop. In fact, at this point I've just about stopped spending money on it, except for an occasional very cheap game. I'm not going to take the risk of losing those games if my 3DS is lost or stolen. The lack of an account system is a major part of my decision not to buy a Wii U. Wake up, Nintendo! , putting the games on a memory card won't help you, because you can't put that card into another system and play those games. Granted not calling Nintendo is stupid, but you can't blame the guy. If that happened to me I would literally cry. At least they credited him some money but 200 bucks is alot. This is why I've been hesitant to make the switch to downloadable games. There's just no assurance that your purchases are yours. You're just leaving it in the hands of whichever service you're buying from. Sure, with physical media it can get stolen or become broken, but at least it's left to your responsibility. I really wish it was tied to the account, but i understandb what Nintendo is saying, because there is a easy way to get free games on xbox live you will need a friend to do it, but im not going to say it, i dont want to get ban from this website. Yeah...Nintendo really, really, really needs to get a multi-platform, universal account system together. It also depends on the "Terms and conditions" that no one reads. If this was part of those conditions, then his case will be tossed out. Jon should contact the Better Business Bureau Really? Sue for $200? And give 66 to the lawyer. His purchase only guaranteed use on the Wii console onto which it was downloaded. It was his mistake. Whether the policy is a good one or not, it was his mistake. Just another case of twisted thinking. Most companies would have given him zilch. Nintendo gives him 200 dollars and it's a tragedy. It's not tied to the hardware really. It's just that nintendo has to do the transfer for you for RIGHT NOW .They have to perfect the security of this account system they really can't afford a major hack like the PSN debacle. Sony fans easily forgave them, Nintendo fans will not seeing these comments atm.
The word TRAGIC is an example of the poison being placed in these sites. did he lose his damn family, home ...... NO the word to use is unfortunate, or dumb on his part. Is it really difficult to have a universal account? I'll never understand Nintendo's logic here. But, honestly, I think both Nintendo and Jon are at fault here. Jon should have contacted Nintendo, and Nintendo needs to wise up. I can't believe people are seriously defending Nintendo here. This is a simple, basic system that should have been implemented years ago. Nintendo needs to pull their finger out and implement an account-based system. Personally i cannot see a Universal Nintendo account system that would mean getting the 3DS VC titles for free if you already own them on your Wii U, because its Nintendo they want you to pay for the games all over again like the Wii to the Wii U VC like i said before as long as iwata is in charge us nintendo fans will never see an Account-based system
#IwataOUT Marching to the beat of your own drum is perfectly fine, but when its something that makes YOU look bad then you have a problem on your hands. Its so common place that people have just come to except it as a thing so not having it and their attitude towards it makes them look really ignorant. They would be much better off using an actual account system and limiting the number of consoles you can be logged into at one time. As for Jon being foolish its very common (and even encouraged) to return your faulty products to the store rather than send it in for repair, and you can't blame the guy for assuming his NNID is transferable like with every other device. Nintendo need to fix this, i used to buy loads on my Wii until i couldn't get back my downloads, (I bought a black Wii when they came out n gave the old one to my Brother) Now i won't even go for downloads any more since its a mess to sort if something does happen where you lose them. so john spent 400 hundred on games that he played and enjoyed or hated.then he lost the games and he got 200 back to spend on new games that he has'nt played.sounds sweet to me. Didn't they get the highest score for customer service on a survey a while ago? Ok. The problem here is the max is $200, unless I'm insane and that's just the 3DS max. Anyway, what nintendo should've done is give him 200,000 points too, then all would be fine. As (3) said, that one guy even got compensation, too, but Jon had the max they can give him (unless they want to include 3DS if he has one). EDIT: Also, you can very simply just make so each account can only be locked into one Wii U at a time, so only one copy is floating around, like a retail game. The problem is, with "most companies," there would be an account-based system to prevent this. But I do agree nintendo is a lot better for compensation. It's an asinine approach especially considering how frequently Nintendo iterates on its systems. I recently had my PS3 laser go out and it was cheaper to trade in the old console and get a new, improved console than to have the older system fixed. I traded in the broken system and a few hours later, my entire library was available on the new system and I was back in business. Stuff like this is why I avoid the e-shop at all costs. I never download something if I can get a real physical copy. If it is download only I have to want it really bad to buy it. The DRM is just too restrictive and a hassle. Will I still be able to transfer a game or re-download free in 5 years if my 3DS breaks? Probably not. It is at the whims of a 3rd party as to if i can get my games back. You just never know. I say don't download something if you want to keep it. Think of download titles as rentals. Seriously, get your poo together Nintendo!!
I'm glad I don't download games myself, but the fact that this system is in place baffles me. Even worse is that there are people here actually defending it!
One of Nintendo's stupidest decisions ever, they seem to have a real knack for them lately too! I don't really think anyone's defending it, as much as they are saying it's not that big of a deal. This didn't need to happen. I have way more games on my account than this kid, and I'm not worried. If my console breaks(by spilling water on it to test it's short circuit limit), it's in warranty, and will be $80 to fix if it's not. Has anyone done 'torture' tests on the Wii U yet? We should be more concerned about that IMO. Whoops, I voted Yes but meant to vote No. Does Nintendo even care anymore? It seems they have just given up. Wake up Nintendo! The success of the Wii U depends on it. How can you spend 400$ on eshop ?
I cant come up with games worth even 100$ that are worth getting. I've spent over $500, probably more. I had the exact same problem as THIS guy (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2012/11/how-nintendo-drm-trapped-400-of-downloaded-games-on-my-failing-wii/), but Nintendo didn't charge me a dime to fix it - they said I'd been a loyal customer too long to do otherwise. However, I neglected to back up my game save data (long story...), so I lost all my progress. BUT! At least all my games were (eventually) transferred over... This bullcrap from Nintendo means less purchases, and less third party support.
And this is the very reason I only bought (or I should say "rent") just e few Wiiwares.
This is so incredibly stupid I just don't know what to say anymore.
WAKE UP NINTENDO! This is showy I only go digital if I absolutely have to. I prefer hardcopies. The only stuff I ever bought digital are the digital only releases. IMHO, digital is just tough to manage. I remember when a friend of mine moved away from the US, he had issues with his iTunes purchases because he had to switch stores. I'm happy to defend Nintendo on many matters, but I simply can't do it here. I recently said that Nintendo shouldn't copy/paste competitors' online services; that they should create their own, unique experiences. I stand by that statement...but come on, having a unified account for all systems is... Just. Common. Fricken'. Sense! Yes its wrong that Nintendo are behind the times. But they haven't decieved anyone. If you've spent $400 on downloadable games, you're going to want to know exactly whats going to happen to your downloads if there's a fault. It is stupid to act on assumptions, not knowing the full facts. I would be extra careful to research all that I need to know before doing anything with a faulty system. Thats common sense. Honestly, this kids of story is why I haven't purchased a retail title via download. I've been tempted to, but then I remember that it could all go away with one little accident. Come on Nintendo. I know you don't want to lose money, but this isn't the way! This is a sad story, Really Nintendo... In this day an age...come on, Very poor infrastructure but I know it will improve in the future. This is more of a problem with the unnecessary divide between Wii and WiiU than it is with tying downloads to one machine. Nintendo has a point that people could easily be scamming the system and trying to get free downloads. Jon's last name is "Dummy". No. well thats one more vote for physical media whenever possible put it on an sd card, thats what i did with my dsi when i traded in to get 3ds Jon is a TOTAL IDIOT.. Nintendo have certainly got the right idea! Unlike both Microsoft and Sony who rip users off!!
I recently sold my 360 with a tonne of downloaded games, could I sell the downloaded games with my console? NO ... They are tied to an account in my name which i no longer use!!!! Resulting in a total waste of MY MONEY!
When I come to sell my WiiU, will I be able to sell the downloaded games with it? YES!!!!!
Nintendo have done us proud!! I honestly don't care either way. First off, why get rid of the Wii anyway. Someday when I buy the Wii U, I sure as hell am not getting rid of my Wii. It's the same reason that my Gamecube is hooked up right next to my Wii, I never get rid of systems. If there is one thing I hate about Nintendo Life it's the countless Nintendrones who defend Nintendo no matter what and will never admit Nintendo could make a mistake. Tying it to the console is really an archaic system for full retail downloads. I voted no, as most people! It's a big fear from me: The more games I download, the more I fear I will lose them someday! Nintendo, just make this stop! By the way: I can imagine allllll the people who Nintendo lost because they where pissed of losing their games! Those people are probably lost forever! Do you even realize that, Nintendo?!
If your Wii U broke then Nintendo would replace it and transfer all your games/saves to the new system. They did it for my Wii (for free too) and it only took 4 dys to return (unlike Microsoft who take up to 3 months). If 'Jon' had done that then he wouldn't have had a problem. Likewise if it was stolen then they may reimburse you (I've heard it happen before), but that is probably more of a friendly gesture on a case by case basis (you'd need a Police report for a start). There are obviously problems with purchases being tied to a system, but hopefully this will be rectified in the future (maybe when we get Miiverse on 3DS we'll get unified accounts too). Why don't you guys link the other Kotaku story? You know, the one where the guy did the proper thing, and Nintendo gave him 57,000 Wii points and an extra $50 in eshop credit for the inconvenience? That is a wrong opinion and you should feel bad. Jerkish comments aside, seriously, how can you protect this? YOu could just as easily sell your damn account. Nintendo can track every purchase you make via Club Nintendo. They know darn well that you have bought a game, and you should be able to get it on your console if you replace it, as is industry-standard practice. There is no excuse for this system, Nintendo. None. Shadow of the Eternals Will Cost $5 Per Episode Contains Art Assets Purchased From Silicon Knights

Shadow of the Eternals Will Cost $5 Per Episode, Contains Art Assets Purchased From Silicon Knights Nintendo Life

More details emerge for Eternal Darkness successor by Share: Precursor has revealed some details about how it intends to distribute its "spiritual successor" . Speaking on the company's official site, Technical Director Sean Thompson had this to say: Our plan is $5 / episode, via digital delivery. However other options (bundles, etc..) are possible in the future. Precursor has also revealed that it has purchased art assets from Silicon Knights to use in the new project. Speaking to , studio head Paul Caporicci — who used to work for Silicon Knights — had this to say: We did purchase some art assets from Silicon Knights and we were very happy to be able to put those assets created by the talented past employees to use. However, Caporicci has stopped short of calling this a direct sequel. Eternal Darkness boasted a unique "Sanity meter", which Nintendo patented. The fact that Precursor is avoiding infringing that patent should tell you all you need to know about why this isn't being called Eternal Darkness 2: I think you’ve seen other games borrow that idea — Batman [Arkham Asylum] had it, for example — so I think there’s a lot of flexibility for us to be able to take themes from that. Despite the lack of official sequel status, Caporicci has stated that his company has "a great relationship" with the Kyoto firm - echoing comments made . With 28 days remaining, Precursor's for Shadow of the Eternals has accrued over $122,000 of its $1,500,000 goal. Do you think $5 per episode is a fair price? Would you rather pay a bundle price for all of the episodes? Let us know by posting a comment below. [source , via ] Share: About Damien has over a decade of professional writing experience under his belt, as well as a repulsively hairy belly. Rumours that he turned down a role in The Hobbit to work on Nintendo Life are, to the best of our knowledge, completely and utterly unfounded. Comments ) I want them to explain how they are offering episides 1-5 to donators when the 1.5 will only give them enough to make 1 episode. Just stop this messing about trying to pass off a knock off game as somethinnew when inclearly isnt, sign on with Nintendo to make an actual and full Eternal Darkness 2, not as sodding "episodes", its pathetic. As ultimately a full and direct sequel is what fans want and ultimately what fans will pay you for. Unless eternal
Darkness 2 is underway as te secret retro studios project and that is why Nintendo have not reeled this in already, but will allow it to infringe on their ideas slightly as long as it sees an eshop release then everybody wins Episodic content....urgh. Count me in when there's a full size game to download. None of this 'episode' crap where you can't even be sure that the next episode will ever get released at times if they don't hit their sales targets with the current one. Hate it when publishers/devs do this, absolutely hate it. I'll wait for them all to be out and then just buy a bundle. Oh joy!
I like how Nintendo takes everything that I didn't like from the other consoles, and they do it on the Wii U.
Nintendo is becoming a spoiled teenages who only wants to learn for its own mistakes, instead of others.
If it already been done, why do it? Well, Walking Dead was awesome episodic content. As a general practice, I normally would avoid. Just watched the 9 minute gameplay video. I dont care what they call it, this clearly IS Eternal Darkness 2. The content, artistically and subjectively, is the same as Eternal Darkness, the mechanics are the same, the premise is the same. Just admit and release it as such and attempt to make it as amazing as the original. Walking Dead actually benefits massively from being episodic, there's a chance this could too. That said, I'd much rather a full blown retail release with Nintendo's approval...and the gameplay footage shown looks mega bog-standard. Count me out also. Ill look into it when the full game is available sometime, but this episodic stuff is bullcrap.
But theres one thing i didnt get: What was the arkham asylum comparison for when it came to the sanity feature in eternal darkness ?
About walking dead beeing an awesome episodic game. I guess it was thanks to telltales experience with that format and it beeing an adventure game, so, its more story driven. Adventures tend to be more or less interactiv "movies" which was right up WDs alley
Ill see how thios turns out. Like i said, ill be interested as soon as every part is available on the eShop. I don't have any problem with its episodic nature but it is true that 12 episodes are a lot and it is possible that they don't get to finish them which would be terrible. I agree in that they should just work side by side with Nintendo and turn it into Eternal Darkness 2 and sell it complete. i would buy the episodes as DLC 5$ per episode.
but then again, i hope the episodes arent short storys.
it has to be worth our money. so yes i would buy it. I think the risk in this approach is, can they end an episode leaving you wanting more. Walking Dead did that. With others I tried, I didn't go beyond the first. Episodic gaming? I thought this nonsense went away a couple of years ago. No thanks. I'm sort of meh on this. I never experienced Eternal Darkness and so far this doesn't really look interesting enough to stand on it's own. I DO hope they make an awesome game full of passion, though. Care to be more specific? What mistakes of others has it failed to learn from? And what does this one developer's crowd-sourced game reveal about them? Full game only...but Eternal Darkness stuff....hmmmm, if it's as good as the 1st one, i can't pass. The Walking Dead demonstrates the opposite. I'll probably end up funding but I'm not sure about how much. Actually it doesn't. They ended up packing the game up and selling the full thing on retail. Which is what should have been done in the first place. I do plan on picking up Walking Dead eventually, but it will be for the whole thing for $5 during a Steam sale. Betting on Xmas for that to happen. I assume he's just being LordJumpMad in this case. The poor grammar is a dead giveaway. Wasn't the original Eternal Darkness split into chapters anyways (a lot of them if I remember right)? So this results in episodic content that adds up to $25 ($5 * 5 episodes). Their other decisions are the ones you should be more wary about. Like the Kickstarter as Peach64 pointed out. And having Denis Dyack at the helm. Even though I dont really like the idea of episodes, then there's the awesome Walking Dead game that I'm yet to play. ...Nintendo isn't developing this. Just so you know. I want the return of the insanity effects. That, to me, made the game! Without it, this could be any other game. I'd probably wait for a full retail release before considering picking this up. Well, that is assuming that this game actually turns to be worth playing. From what I've seen this is as close to Eternal Darkness as it can get and that is great.
I don't understand why people worry about Dyack. Eternal Darkness was his game, so it's for the best when the same guy makes this (spiritual) sequel. Episodic content is a double bladed sword. On Nintendo consoles it worked for Tales of Monkey Island Episodes 1-5 and Strong Bad 1-5, but not so much vor escapeVektor and Pearl Harbor Trilogy. For just 5€ per episode I would take the plunge anyway. Looks good enough for that price. Depending on the gameplay, there are easy solutions nowadays to make episodic content feel like a full game:
1) You could transfer your game data from episode to episode (like in the Mass Effect, Golden Sun, etc.)
or 2) All episodes share the same save file. The game will be 5€ including one (the first) episode, and additional chapters will be unlocked in the main menu as you purchase them as DLC for 5€ each individually. If there's 12 chapters for 5€, that's pretty much like a full 60€ retail game.
Though the game could be played completely different, with chapters standing on their own.
When I was buying The Tales of Monkey Island on WiiWare (5 episodes, 1 released each month) I realised that the charm of getting a good episodic game is the anticipation for the next episode to be released. Whatever happens, as long as this game is much like Eternal Darkness and as good as Eternal Darkness then everything will work out. Hmmm... Episodic huh? I was thinking perhaps that this was a full game like Eternal Darkness, now it's just another Kickstarter project that is just begging for money. Well so much for Eternal Darkness 2 as this one choose not to be it. I refuse to buy episodic games on principal. I was incredibly excited when I heard the news of this game, but I'm not paying for it until I can get it all in one package. But really it's not even going to get funded, so I don't know why I'm bothering to think about it... XP I don't mind paying per level on games like TANK TANK TANK, but on real games, I kinda do. Well it's good to know the episodes are cheap, cheaper than most VC games ironically enough (and some people actually believe the VC games are reasonably priced), but I'd go for the bundle rather than each individual episode. It's just a pity I'd have to wait for every episode to come out first before I could actually do that. This is what happens when you follow trends to closely lol There's 12 episodes. The total will come to $60. That may be the going rate for retail games, but I'd much rather wait for bundles to pay less. Eternal Darkness wasn't worth $60, I doubt a crowd-funded, digital sequel will either. From what I understand, Nintendo wouldn't want to be a part of this after Silicon Knights' previous fiascos involving money and so on. If Episode 1 gets funded, they will have the engine and everything needed for the game done. From there, they only need to make new characters and new locations, but built on the same game. It'd be like DLC. It won't cost nearly as much and they would presumably make the addition episodes from money gained out of stretch goals and people actually buying Episode 1. 1. Nintendo's not making this.
2. There are episodic games already on Wii & DSi from other publishers.
3. Even if they were, what mistakes do you believe they'd be learning from? The Walking Dead was episodic and it sold millions. People loved it. You calling that a mistake? And do you realize how much DLC is sold, even though people whine about it? You not liking trends that are around is one thing, but they aren't "others' mistakes" if they are successful, bro. Full on eternal darkness game would be best, also release of the original would be lovely, i cant wait for gamecube games on wii u also a few wii games on wii u s virtual console Not sure what to think right now. Being the Eternal Darkness fan that I am, I will still probably pay up. $5 an episode is hard to beat for something that looks this good. 12 episodes = $60 total, that's one full game. Clearly these guys have good intentions and don't plan on scamming us like many episodic games might do. All I'm really hoping for is that episode 1 comes with a framework to add the other games on as DLC so it is all in one place. I got that Back to the Future game on PS3 and sure I could organize it to all be in one place, but it should all be in one game icon instead of five. Just dump the whole deal on a disc! That's the way!! That should've been the price (And the release schedule) for SEGA's releases of Sonic 4... Not crazy about episodic format. I did buy the season pass for WD, but I felt it was very short. Each episode for 5 bucks gives maybe an hour or two at the most of play time. But for great titles like ED and WD, I would consider buying a pass again. Leave A Comment Hold on there, you need to to post a comment...
Related Articles
What would U suggest for Mii? Report Suggests You ll Soon Be Able To Purchase Nintendo Titles Via Your Phone Or PC

Report Suggests You ll Soon Be Able To Purchase Nintendo Titles Via Your Phone Or PC

Report Suggests You'll Soon Be Able To Purchase Nintendo Titles Via Your Phone Or PC Nintendo Life

Nintendo outlines its digital future by Share: Nintendo is taking the online side of its business very seriously — little wonder when you consider that it has just reported a compared to last year — and the next phase of its plan will allow users to purchase Wii U and 3DS content using platforms other than their consoles. According to a , Nintendo is working on a system which will allow consumers to bypass the Wii U and 3DS eShops and pay for games using their smartphones or PCs. Nintendo recently expanded its Wii U-based Miiverse social network to include web users, and an account-based online purchasing system sounds like the next logical step to us. Rival firms like Sony already have this kind of feature in place, and Google's Android OS goes one better — you can log onto the Google Play store on a computer, purchase a game and then select which of your Android devices you'd like to install it to. The download happens automatically, provided the device in question is turned on and connected to the web - you don't even need to have the device with you at the point of purchase. By removing the barriers to making a purchase — in this case, not actually having to physically be at your console to buy a digital title — download numbers are likely to grow. Hopefully Nintendo will also look to including some kind of centralised account management system which tracks your purchases and allows you to download them to another system if yours is sold, lost or broken. At present, purchases are tied to 3DS and Wii U consoles at hardware level. Would you be interested in the ability to buy a Wii U game when you're out of the house and have it download to your console automatically? Or do you not see the point of such a feature? [source , via ] Share: About Damien has over a decade of professional writing experience under his belt, as well as a repulsively hairy belly. Rumours that he turned down a role in The Hobbit to work on Nintendo Life are, to the best of our knowledge, completely and utterly unfounded. Comments ) I see no point in this personally. More importantly, we need our games to be tied to our accounts and not our systems - why Nintendo isn't focusing on that I have no idea. right. No account, no buy.from me. Nintendo, this is a standard. Don't try to make it different like everyone else just for the sake of it. I'd say that account-based purchases will come with this system. They'd have to, as you'll be signing into your account remotely, not the hardware itself. yeah, or Nintendo will only sell Download Codes online and directly from them. Like the ones GAME sell. So your games will still be linked to specific hadrware you redeem this code. I am pretty sure this will be the case knowing Nintendo this days.
But i will still be the first one singning praise if they really announce an account sytem. agreed. Account based is the next step, which is great if you ask me. I would use this service - very convenient to browse the eshop and buy stuff on it only to be able to play it as soon as I get home. This is brilliant on PS3, when the last of us came out I purchased it on my work computer and when I got home it was downloaded and installed. What damo said is correct too, this would most likely come with an account system. Very good news. I guess its better late than never. The good thing is this means that were going to have a proper account system on Nintendo consoles. Also supports 3DS getting NN/Miiverse this fall as well. (why the 3DS wasn't built with it is a failing on nintendo's part). Lets hope that Nintendo can keep it hack-free. Going live to the web has become a dangerous thing to do! Cool, sounds like they are getting closer to releasing an account based system.
Good point Sony did have a security breech not to long ago as a result.. @ arrmixer:
They had it coming because they said the PS3 was "unhackable" because they said it was. Yeah, kind of like the "unsinkable" Titanic. Slowly catching up to the others. This sounds promising with regards to the account system becoming a reality. I think once that happens they'll see a big boost in digital sales. Damo
I'd say that account-based purchases will come with this system As the article says "suggests" i just hope it does come, as this is the only thing stopping me spending money like i do on the PSN. Im surprised they didnt add 3DS to the mix, would be kinda cool to buy a Wii U game from your 3DS or vice versa. Unless this is already possible of course then disregard lol Nice. I'll be able to download a game at work and have it ready for me when I get home! Not necessarily. Currently your Nintendo Network ID is tied to one machine exclusively; so if you log on with that ID via your PC, the system will know that you are buying something for that tied console. I mean, I really hope you're right, but knowing Nintendo I fear you may not be. Agreed. I lik this this idea. It will make it easier to buy games for my nephews and nieces who live quite a distance away. Hopefully a centralised account system is in the works as well! I for one would buy more VC games if I could use them on both my 3DS and WiiU. I find it hard to swallow having to purchase a VC game twice to be able to use it on both consoles. It's exactly that what the whole article says. How i see this coming, i knew that people wouldn't understand this. Today nobody even tries to read a news or understand a thing on the internet. Only with an account based system you can buy 3DS games from the PC, get it now? I still prefer the physical disc and when I have the option to buy a game that way, I will. - Wow. Thanks for predicting our ignorance and showing me the light. /sarcasm. All this article states about the system (That isn't speculation) is that "Nintendo is working on a system which will allow consumers to bypass the Wii U and 3DS eShops and pay for games using their smartphones or PCs". While this may well mean that it is account based (As I hope it is) it could also mean that you buy download codes from your PC, or even that the game once purchased on your account is only applicable to one console ever, at which point you'd need to buy it again (Not to mention what said). There's no guarantee thus far that it's actually going to happen, so the patronising lecture wasn't really necessary. I guess I don't really care either way. The only time I browse the eShop and purchase games is when I have time for gaming — either in front of my 3DS or WiiU. And since I take my 3DS to work, it makes it easy to assess the eShop on the go. It would be nice to have, given most everyone else has this function, though. An account system would rock, but right now I'm not sure my Internet connection will handle it well.... YES
I was on holiday away from the uk in America. The offer came into effect and ended while I was away and I was desperately trying to find a way to remotely buy it. I even contacted nintendo to find a way to which I was told no. Instances like that it's very valuable. So basically Nintendo is looking for ways so paying to them is not tied to your console, that's only o.k. if they also find ways to games not be tied to the console exactly right.. although your account does hold your purchase information. How else can Nintendo transfer it to your new system remotely? I think people are making a mountain out of a mole hill... If your system breaks or is stolen, they have a process inplace of moving your purchases to your new device... I can understand not downloading things to your 3DS in fear you might leave it on the bus or something, but are you really going to lose a Wii U system? Is Nintendo's system cumbersome? Yes
Is it prohibitive from buying on eshop? I don't think so on the Wii U. As says, there's nothing in this news piece which implicitly states that the account-based login will be coming with such a system. We all hope for it, but this is Nintendo we're talking about - nothing is certain! Nintendo will always create hardware. Anyone who thinks that hardware isn't the future, is someone I disagree with. I don't want to play Nintendo on some bulldoodoopoopie phone, I want a specially made system made for the most innovative and fun games in the world - Nintendo games. Integration of game and system data, etc via internet is fine, and must always serve the game and the gamer, not the insatiable greed of some pathetic business people. Progress in technology doesn't mean putting everything on the internet. If you think that's progress, then youre a person I disagree with. Open your eyes, person with whom I disagree, there is a living ecosystem and living network called life. Playing side by side with a friend will never go out of "style". What's getting dated and laughable here is this idea that one thinks its edgy and futuristic to think every single thing will be available on some computer. A person I disagree with could come to that conclusion. Its like saying in there will future their will be robots. I mean, that is a complete lack of imagination. Or some human being thinks we will all live in a browser or internet explorer or some crappy OS. Person with whom I disagree, nature has an operating system. High technology is already here and now. A tablet or high speed internet and the "cloud" aren't high tech. This is laughable and pathetic.
Please watch the insults and profanity, as per our Rules. Should you post a profanity and insult-laced comment like this in the future, you may find your account banned from posting at Nintendo Life altogether. — TBD It's about time! I use xbox.com all the time to make downloadable purchases while I'm at work. Otherwise, it's likely I'd forget that X game is on sale and not getting around to purchasing it. And with Xbox, you don't even have to have the console on, it has a queue that your purchases go to until you boot up the system.
This isn't talking about downloading and playing Nintendo games on your phone or PC. This is talking about being able to go to a browser and select games you want to purchase FOR your Wii U or 3DS. It just makes it more convenient if you can't access the console. Nintendo now need to let u use your account on another Wii like the Xbox come on Nintendo get with it if your saying you want a decent online experience this should have been day one!
I want to be able to play games like injustice and cod with xp with my mate so he can level up while he's using my console. it makes me laugh when people complain and they haven't actual read the article properly lol But you can nearly find any information you need on the internet. And if we're talking about games, there certainly is a way to find all the games you need on the web. I'm not trying to promote anything, of course. What's so wrong with Nintendo making Kong, Mario Bros, or Super Mario Bros on the phone? It'd make Ninty rich, and it would make smartphone users frustrated! He did read the article correctly. "Integration of game and system data, etc via internet is fine", raiden was just using the opportunity to rant and call people Grade A Morons, which is understandable. Grade A Moron is quite fun to say out-loud. I've yet to buy even a single eshop game. I'm waiting for the DRM to change. Hopefully they'll get around to making joint accounts without being linked to the systems. I was always under the impression that accounts would be coming by the end of the year, so I'll keep sticking to that. It doesn't really concern me that much though, and I'm tired of the endless comments for accounts to be implemented. It's a neat idea to be able to purchase games online, I'd like to be able to "pre-order" games and have it download automatically when the game releases. And if you could use Paypal as a payment method that'd be awesome.
Jeez, that's a lot of bad language ranting about something completely irrelevant to the article in question. This is a cool idea. I'm looking forward to being able to buy something while I'm on break at work so that it's ready when I get home, but the only games I download are so small, that it doesn't matter much. I'm going retail until there is a substantial price point difference to justify otherwise. Sounds brilliant to me since I'm doing all my Wii U purchasing as downloads and I keep my machine in standby all the time. I'd just need to remember to have the hard drive switched on before a release date, then when I get home the game is ready to play! I completely agree. It's kind of absurd with the technical specs of the 3DS to think that it can't handle any of the vintage software (that includes GC and N64). I would buy a 3DS for that reason alone (that's not to mention it's already fantastic library. As for the remote download, sign me up. I agree too with the author about backups living on the cloud, that's industry standard--the current Nintendo system is simply bad. I was just thinking the other day that I wished they'd do this... great! This basically means an account based system with eShop purchases, so I'm stoked! Pretty old news. Nintendo already confirmed a year or two ago that they were working on this system for 3DS and that the 3DS was ready for it.
Actually, I'm pretty sure the 3DS can't run virtual console Gamecube games. N64 yes, Gamecube no. Emulation requires a system with much more power than the console it's trying to emulate to run smoothly, especially if the system architectures are different. In raw power, the 3DS is still pretty close to Gamecube and Wii and it uses a different CPU architecture. Only way to see Gamecube games on 3DS is for devs to go back and either port the games to 3DS or completely remake them. This is awesome! I would love to purchase a game while at work and have it already downloaded to my console by the time I get home. Of course a change making my downloads linked to my account would be very welcome too. I don't see the point in purchase a game from a smartphone or a PC, but they better provide a personal account system like the rest of the world, come on Nintendo, just do it The biggest good news for me, so I'm waiting for this fall to have this update!! YES, yes.. what he said.. I agree, I'm starting to get the feeling like nintendo is trying to be different just for the sake of being different. That will fail more times than succeed. Nintendo, it's not all about how you're getting it TO us but about how you'll KEEP IT with us.That's where change is needed. Sell us something we NEED for a change. Cool I will be taking advantage of this, since I'm always flying airplanes and not home all the time. There have been a few times I'd have wanted to take advantage of this. I'll be glad to see the added convenience. Tied accounts? I could see the convenience if Nintendo actually actively had sales on games, but they don't. Why would one need to buy a game right away instead of simply waiting until they have access to their console? They'd have to download it once they got back to it anyway - so it's not about an internet connection. I've been saying they need to do this. Instead of having a Nintendo games on mobile devices, they need to just have a really great Nintendo app with screenshots, videos, wallpapers, and the ability to browse and purchase from the eShop. Cool. Ya, I think Nintendo will apply an account system. If there isn't an account system, then none of this matters to me. Digital purchases have to be account-based, this is 2013, not 1990. I would definitely use it if I could connect both my Wii U and my 3DS accounts and money, so I could put money in my 3DS and have it on both devices. Also, I have been known to lose or break my Nintendo handhelds a lot in the past. I have lost four handhelds, got one stolen right out of my lap, (he just came and ran, this mad world, I was only ten years old) and I broke three. If I were to recover my downloads if something were to happen to my 3DS on another one, then that would be perfect. I have $70 worth of games downloaded on my 3DS XL right now, and I wouldn't want to repurchase them. One more thing that I would like which really angers me that I can't is if I could download a Virtual Console game on one system and download it on my other system instead of being forced to purchase the same game again just to play it on both my 3DS and Wii U. I only play Virtual Console games on my 3DS, and I would rather wait for EarthBound to come to the 3DS than purchase it on both because I don't want to pay for EarthBound twice. If other Nintendo fans purchased it twice on the 3DS and Wii U, then give them some extra money in their accounts to make it up. Please Nintendo don't make a mess of this!
I hope to see this appear along with the 3DS Miiverse and eshop overhaul that's LONG overdue! I love this idea, actually earlier today i was at the Nintendo website wondering if i could purchase a game directly from there for my 3DS. This would be the perfect incentive to make Nintendo create a LONG OVERDUE account base system I hope so! If this can coincide with the ability to purchase without linking to one piece of hardware indefinitely, I won't only buy more digitally instead of retail, I imagine I'll buy more games, period. Absolutely agree with that. That's why I try not to buy games with a retail version on the eShop. I only buy games what are exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS eShop.... although I wish Nintendo would just tie our games to our club Nintendo account so we can install them in any system we want once we log on into that Club Nintendo account. now if they would take online multiplayer play more seriously we would really have something. They are still so far behind in this respect. I can't believe they didn't try to convince square to bring Dragon Quest X to Wii and Wii-U in North America. Also so many other ways to improve the online experience they just seem to let it pass by like it doesn't even exist. They could also link our account to multiple systems that would be a huge improvement. Account system good, very good. Could make use of purchasing on my PC as well. Good but nothing to freak out over. obviously this will be using an account based system Technically they already have an account based system for all consoles. It's just the case that we can't transfer accounts from system to another yourself (we can for 3ds if both systems are present) if your console is damaged beyond repair Nintendo can still transfer your stuff to another console for you so I really don't understand why you all fret so much. Sorry for not thinking like that about Nintendo. hopefully they tie previous purchases to accounts "Nintendo is taking the online side of its business very seriously" To seriously, if you ask me! They better get some third-party retail games on the Wii u! They better come up with bundles again that contain boxed copies of games instead of cheap downloads!! SnowCastle Games Keen on Public Beta Testing and In Game DLC Purchases for the Wii U eShop

SnowCastle Games Keen on Public Beta Testing and In Game DLC Purchases for the Wii U eShop

SnowCastle Games Keen on Public Beta Testing and In-Game DLC Purchases for the Wii U eShop Nintendo Life

Nintendo aims to be accommodating by Share: While the current rate of arrival for new download-only titles on the Wii U eShop could be considered rather slow, the coming months look set to bring us a handsome range of new games, many of them multiplatform. With Nintendo's free Unity tools and generally supportive terms attracting a number of studios — including some that'll be publishing on a Nintendo system for the first time — the future of the eShop platform is looking positive. While the console's eShop functionality and its publishing terms are a long way ahead of the Wii Shop, there are naturally still substantial areas for improvement. The influx of interested developers actively working on the Wii U has included plenty of those that are most experienced with PC platforms such as Steam. Just this week told us that he'd be interested in the option for beta availability on the Wii U; sometimes smaller developers on Steam give you an opportunity to either buy or freely download a game early, and your feedback assists with later stages of development. It's win-win, as you get an early crack at an anticipated game and the developer gets valuable user information. Another developer interested in features such as these is SnowCastle Games, which is bringing its intriguing RPG to the Wii U eShop; its target release date for the early episodes is Q4 2014. Speaking with , the studio's co-founder Bendik Stang explained how Nintendo won the company around, but highlighted key areas for improvement on the platform. We met with Dan Adelman and Tim Symons at GDC in San Francisco in March this year. Before GDC we had no hopes for developing for the Wii U, but the meeting changed this. Coming back from the conference we found ourselves fast tracked through the certification process. It was our first experience working with one of the 3 big ones, and we feel really well taken care of. At PAX Prime a few weeks ago, we met with Mr. Adelman again, and talked about our need for some extended eShop features. We would like a lot of stuff that the eShop currently does not support; like public beta testing and an in-game shop for the DLCs. He told me that they wanted to accommodate our needs, but it would take some time to get all the features in. So hopefully by the time we are ready with FoM, those features will be added to the eShop. In terms of influences for the title, meanwhile, a notable Nintendo franchise got its traditional name drop. There’s too many influences to list here, but in general it’s high quality stuff we all love like Disney classics, Studio Ghibli, Legend of Zelda, Squaresoft’s Final Fantasy series and western games such as Beyond Good and Evil, and Monkey Island. So all fairly big budget stuff! We think it'd certainly be worthwhile for Nintendo to include more intuitive DLC purchasing options and early beta access for games, and it's positive that Nintendo of America's Dan Adelman has reportedly suggested that it's a possible future development. Do you think these sorts of features should be a priority for Nintendo's eShop teams? Let us know, and you can see a trailer for Festival of Magic below. on [source , via ] Share: Comments ) For games I'm interested in I'd love to beta test them before their release to make them better & from the trailer this is a game I'd definitely be interested in Public Beta testing is doing something that reputable companies pay for. There should be some worthwhile benefit to the person doing it. Already thinking about DLC before the thing is even remotely finished (Already totally uninterested). unrandomsam, the guys are talking episodic content and weekly challenges. do not rush to conclusions, bro! Beta testing and early access games are slowly pushing me away from my main gaming platform (PC), i'd rather the trend not come to consoles aswell. That's the thing though right....there is nothing making you buy these games early. Just so long as games are well marked as being 'early access' then I don't see the problem. I noticed you can now go directly to the eShop through Zen Pinball to buy additional tables, without exiting the game. So they are definitely trying to improve it. His running looks so akward i hope they fix this. Well the rest looks interesting. But when they really going episodic im out so... let me get this strait. The game is going to go into BETA and yet they are talking about DLC....... wtf? Full respect for these guys, I have sent them a couple of questions about the game and the work process in the past and they have always been friendly. I can't wait to play this, especially if doing so helps them refine the experience. Nintendo Considering Cross-Buy eShop Purchases, But Doesn't Have Anything To Announce Yet Nintendo Life

Feature will be added if enough developers demand it by Share: If you own a PS3 and PC Vita then you'll be aware of the excellent "Cross-Buy" function, which allows you to purchase a game on one system and then download it on the other for free — provided it's available on both in the first place, of course. With so many Virtual Console titles now appearing on Wii U, 3DS and Wii — not to mention cross-platform releases such as Star Wars Pinball and Rage of the Gladiator — it would certainly make sense for Nintendo offer something similar on its systems. Speaking to Nintendo of America's Dan Adelman, popped the question we've been wanting to ask for ages: NWR: On platforms such as Steam and Playstation Network they have what they call a Cross-Buy feature, so when you buy a game on the Playstation 3 or on a Windows PC, you can play the game on PSP/PS Vita or Mac/Linux, respectively. Is there any system in place right now or in the future to enable a similar Cross-Buy feature? For example, a game comes out on the Wii U that the 3DS can also run, and if the developer wants to enable customer play the game on both? DA: We don’t have anything new to announce on that, but I believe that the idea’s been talked about. So it’s something we’re definitely up to considering if there’s enough demand from developers, but nothing to announce for right now. Never mind demand from developers — it's the consumers who will want this the most. Wouldn't you be happier knowing that when you purchased a title on the Wii U you had the option to also download it on your 3DS at no extra cost? Would that encourage you to buy more games digitally? Leave a comment to tell us what you think. [source ] Share: About Damien has over a decade of professional writing experience under his belt, as well as a repulsively hairy belly. Rumours that he turned down a role in The Hobbit to work on Nintendo Life are, to the best of our knowledge, completely and utterly unfounded. Comments ) Would definitely buy more VC games if they were cross-buy. And... "if developers demand it"? Really? Two versions of a game for the price of one is always nice. If developers demand it ??? WHF ???
What about if end customers demand it !
This is a must for Virtual Console I would welcome it. It would also help boosting the Wii U sales. Especially in Japan where "almost everyone" owns a 3ds.
More Wii U/3ds crossplay would rock too! cross buy is important, but account system is even more important, really no matter how fanboys want to spend it, Nintendo is pathetic in this area..... and "if developers demand it?' what about first party titles? Currently they have NES games on both the 3DS and Wii U. They should allow you to purchase it on one platform and play it on the other, its common sense.
Also, the two eShop accounts should be tied so that if I have 5 euros to spend on 3DS, I should be able to use that money on Wii U if I see fit and vice-versa. Wouldn't mind seeing this. Bought Retro City Rampage on Wii this year, so wouldn't mind having it on 3DS when it comes out too. Personally, now RTC is confirmed on 3DS I think it would be better suited to the handheld anyway. it just seems like it would be the common sense thing to do. i think they just care more about what the consumer wants. it's the consumers who drive the market. I want to be able to download games that I have on disk. That way, even my physical purchases will become easily accessible through my hard drive enabled wii u. The less disc swapping and spinning, the better. Are we talking about the same company that charges you an extra $1.50 to play your 20 year old VC games on your Wii U? Actually some of them may be 30 years old, is that possible? They charge $5 for s 30 yr old game they own on Wii and then another $1.50 to play a game we own on the Wii U? Oh yeah, Nintendo is really pushing cross-buy. If Nintendo implemented a 'Cross-Buy' feature for the 3DS & Wii U VC titles, I would be inclined to play Mega Man 2 on the 3DS VC without having to pay for it again for a slightly more expensive price (Wii U: £3.49 vs 3DS: £4.49). Reasons like this is why I hope Nintendo release an update to the 3DS to become compatible with Nintendo Network ID user accounts, especially as it's the same service as the Wii U. Plus having a solution for games to be tied to accounts as opposed to consoles, which is a big reason why I'm not keen on digital versions of retail games. PS: lol at the typo 'PC Vita' They won't do that because you could just install it for you and lend it indefinitely to a friend. They would have to put in place a DRM system like the Xbox One originally intended and God forbid that. We're better off as we are in that regard. Whats a PC Vita? A new handheld console that plays Vita games and PC-Engine HuCards. Finally play Cho Aniki on the go, while skyping with friends and family. Yes and yes! I just received a Wii U as a gift. And although I have the option of repurchasing the same titles I used to own on the Wii Virtual Console for a fraction of the cost, I'm still having to pay again. I own Punch-Out!! On Wii, 3DS, and Wii U for $11. Just wish I could pay $5 flat and enjoy the game on the Nintendo system of my choice. It would be nice but I don't see it happening anytime soon You are absolutely right. If you buy, let's say FF7 on PS3 you can also play it for free on a PSP and PS Vita. Yet if you want to play, let's say, Zelda on all your Nintendo consoles you have to pay three times for it. lol Nintendo is the company that expect you to buy again all your digital titles if your consoles get stolen, is the company that expect you to buy a new console if you ever move to a different region and want to pick physical games in a local store, is the company that expect you to pay extra to play the game you already own in the main Wii U window instead of an slow emulated Wii window..... yah I totally see that company implementing cross buy..... This only works really if the game is exactly the same so VC works however almost all eshop games differ enough that its 2 separate games! hope you like you new wii u! my sn is Nico87 in case you want an online bud to play with I lol'd. Couldn't this same feature work for people with two or more 3DS consoles, such as being able to download two copies of the same game for multiplayer fun without having to shell-out for it? In any case this is one feature for which I've been patiently waiting since the eShop's birth over two years ago. The account system is very important. They need to include it in the next system update. If it's older games sure, but I don't want to have games I can just get at retail forcing me to buy an External HD every year or so. : / I am actually avoiding most VC purchases because of this. If this cross buy came into effect, I would be buying TONS of VC games! : I feel you completely! Screw the developer's demanding it, what about the consumers? Without us, they won't have to worry about selling any games period. The VC games would actually be worth the price if they were 'cross-buy" This would be fantastic! Mostly for the part in having stuff synced to eShop. For instance, my wife's 3DS was stolen and all of her purchased games are pretty much just gone... hoping something like this avoids that kind of headache in the future. "Never mind demand from developers — it's the consumers who will want this the most" +10000000000 This is so true. Nintendo stating they want demand from developers is a poor excuse to not implement this. They know it doesn't really benefit developers so they won't be that bothered about requesting it. This is a consumer benefit and sometimes it feels like Nintendo forgets the consumer is the most important part of any business... They need to take a leaf out of Sony's book in my opinion where they offer so much more value for online games/functionality than Nintendo do. I'm sure I've heard Nintendo use that poor excuse before... sort of saying "be mad at developers, not us." This is a must for me to continue buying from their store. The "the developers are who we listen to" excuse isn't cutting it Nintendo. Another misleading headline. "Definitely up to considering if there's enough demand" doesn't sound like definitely "considering" to me. Doesn't matter. Sony's service seems to enable this on games that are selling poorly; not exactly the best games for this service. Doesn't anyone realize that nobody's holding a gun to your head to purchase a game two/three times over? We ain't exactly entitled to this setup, you know - it's just a nice perk. A nice perk that they should really consider putting in... They said nothing about the virtual console because the 3ds one doesnt have snes games yet, but i hope they reconsider this when all virtual console games are the same in both platforms. Do I smell Miiverse on the horizon. Sniffs Yeah I smell it alright. Yes. Now. yeah this to me is something they already should of made for the VC and announced on the last direct >.< +1 +1 Ummmm.....no! You might want to research that. There are plenty of fantastic games that are cross buy and is available day one. You must not have a PlayStation. I'd love it if they did this. It's so nice being able to move PSOne classics between the PS3 and PSP/Vita, and with the next update they're making it even easier to transfer files wirelessly, so no need to hook them up via USB. Sometimes I want to play on the big TV, sometimes I want to move it the handheld and continue on lunch breaks at work, If Nintendo did this, it would be absolutely wonderful and will only give Nintendo more revenue in the long run. No one likes to double dip within the same gaming company for the same game. I know it's 2 different consoles, but seriously why would I want to buy Mega Man 3 on the Wii U, when I have it on the 3DS?! Nintendo accounts needs to be merged from the Wii U and 3DS. This would make things easier on consumers and still be bountiful on the business side. I don't care to much about Wii U and 3DS Ware, but there is no reason this shouldn't happen with VC games. I would absolutely love cross buy. it would be especially cool if saves synced between both versions using the cloud. I'd also love if games were tied to an account and not to the console. that way I can download games and install them on a couple of Wii Us and have a 3DS for taking on the road while having the 3DSXL for home gaming. The only problem that I have with downloading games digitally is that they are not portable. Say you want to go to a friends house and he already has a Wii U but doesn't have a game that you have. Why wouldn't you just take the disc instead of taking the entire console? If I could download games to an external hard drive, have them locked onto the hard drive, and have the ability to play them on any Wii U console, I would always buy games digitally. I have started to buy games digitally on my 3DS so that I don't have to carry around the games and and there is no chance of loosing them but that is a different story. Why are we even talking about this? We already know the answer... I doubt it will happen, but yes I believe it should. Though some control issues could make that more complicated. Nintendo is notorious for nickel and diming their loyal fan fanbase when it comes to this stuff. I don't see this feature being implement.besides NOA handles the hype machine. They aren't informed when it comes to insider news. I dont really feel there's a huge need for crossbuy implementation. Although it would be good for VC titles, that's a lot of development work that could be better used on a unified account system or better 3DS/WiiU system stability (or you know, more new games). Crossbuy is great between PS3 and Vita but gamers forget that was after PSP owners with UMD's were politely told to love off and re-purchase the game digitally (you could bet most PSP games cost more than VC titles) for their Vita. Mind you, most of those UMD games were never brought to PSN so people still have to keep their PSP and UMDs around or they'll forever lose those games. With DS and 3DS, I dont have to worry about DS games that were never brought to 3DS because it could play both cartridges. It would definitely be good for indie games on the eShop but the developers are the ones that have to make their games with this crossbuy in mind. Dragon's Crown had no cross-buy option along with a few others that dont easily come to mind, so developers are definitely part of the driving force. Consumers just buy things, we arent developing games for the eShop. At the very least, every single VC game should be cross-buy, and should transfer to the successors of the Wii U and the 3DS for free. I would think that indie and retail games should be as well. Yes! I would love that! I have two very large SD cards waiting for it. MH3U in this fashion would have been perfect, but oh well. Better late than never. lol. how is there demand for developers from VC games? haven't the games already been developed? We'd all have real accounts by now if they cared about customer demands. At this point, i'm completely fine with avoiding eShop altogether, so these moronic responses don't faze me. I hate it when a Journalist asks a question, but won't press further on it, especially as in this case. It's poor journalism, imo. Something like this would have been great for Virtual Console pruchases, but obviously it's a bit too late for that now considering most people have already bought separate versions of the same game across Wii, Wii U, and 3DS. Finally a good news for those who own both nintendo console . we need that feature , i hate to pay 2 times for the same game its kinda lame . hope they willl do that Why would developers ever demand it? Nintendo really need to focus on the demand of the customers on these issues. That might help them to push more systems. Hey developers!
Want to sell your game only once instead of multiple times?
What do you mean "no"?
Sorry consumers - developers didn't demand it! This needs to happen so bad. It should be default for virtual console (I believe we are already paying enough for this). Maybe they will launch it with Smash Bros - would be weird to truly have to buy this twice when so much of the game is the same on both platforms. Surely they can learn from Apple in this regard and realise the benefits of a rich ecosystem across platforms!?! Developers? Like...Nintendo? Most Virtual Console games are 1st party. I would buy way more games if I could play them on my 3DS and my Wii U. I've stopped buying Virtual Console titles for platforms that are available on both Wii U and 3DS for this reason. I'm not going to get taken advantage of by Nintendo's dated approach to online content, not in this day and age. A must for Vc games. In the rare instance where a Wii U game and 3DS have same content like MH it would be nice. Yes, you should only have to buy a game one time and never have to pay for it again and be able to play it on every console you will ever own. Aside from VC, they could do this with a few Wii U/ 3DS games. I'm thinking Super Smash Brothers. They would lose immediate profits on software, but could seriously win in hardware sales. "Buy it for 3DS and Nintendo will offer you the Wii U game for download. Or vice-versa. Don't have a Wii U yet? Aren't you tempted to get one, now that we´re offering you this amazing game?"
Risky move, but with good marketing they could make it work to have the 3DS install base and the power of Smash Bros. fuelling Wii U sales. I'd love to be able to download my 3ds ambassador nes games to my wiiu I'm only really interested in cross-buy for VC games, and Nintendo's the biggest developer there... Is your avatar from Syndicate? Nintendo....just do it -.- If they had a Cross-Buy feature, I'd buy a ton more off the eShop. You guys realize that cross-buy kinda goes hand in hand with an account system, right? Not to mention Miiverse will be on both systems.
That should give some ideas that this is probably going to happen, soon. Yes, from the original cover-art. This would be HUGE, and so very appreciated! Whatever is available for VC on Wii-U should also be available to play on the 3DS. Nintendo is losing out on tons of money by making certain VC games only available on Wii-U. I'm looking at you Earthbound. VC cross-buy seems like it would be available, for sure. Games like Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate need it too, or at least a discount. The reason some companies don't like it, is because they think they can get double revenue from both versions. That's not entirely the case, because a system wide compatible cross-buy would make developers always have both systems in mind. As long as a game can be played on both, I see no reason why it would be excluded from one or the other. Most of the games from Capcom seem to have been able to be cross-playable, but they also worked getting those games working on both systems by their own own means. We'll have to see exactly how this plays out, because I could see how some may have both versions from the start, while others charge a small fee to have both playable. Works for me, some of the VC games appearing on the 3DS that are already on the Wii U/Wii seems like a waste of money to me, prefer to just buy the game once and be done wit it.
(I guess I don't mind re-buying them on the Wii U from the Wii though...then again, I dunno...>.>) "if developers demand it" Nintendo are totally out of touch, i don't see this or a account system ever coming to Nintendo console. Yes that would make me really happy! And OF COURSE i'd buy more digital games if that were the case! Highly unlikely to happen though i suppose. Cool! Thanks for the invite. My ID is on my account if you'd like to add me as well. ^Guys, it's a given we(the consumers) want it. Like I said earlier, account systems and cross-buy go hand in hand. You literally can't have one wuthout the other. They bring up developers, because it can enhance games and possibly add more features. Nintendo needs to address that, no doubt, but this is in no way standard. Sony may have had this sort of system worked out years ago, but that has taken time as well, and still isn't allowing users to take advantage. Xbox doesn't really have much of game sharing, either. There really is no reason to complain. I don't really like PS games, so Sony's account system doesn't really matter to me. Obviously, that's my opinion, but I'm sure alot of people don't take Sony or Apple into account, because of the content they offer. Besides Sony and Apple's account systems are arguably lacking as well. Since we know what those devices can do, we're able to point out exactly where they fall short. I'm confused why does everyone want cross-buy? If you want to buy a game for "NINTENDO WII U" or "NINTENDO 3DS" then buy/download it on their respective systems. Oh OK thanks. Not cool. Please watch the insults; if you don't have anything nice to say, it's better to not say anything at all — TBD I pledge to buy 24 VC titles a year if this happens. Cough Super Smash Bros. Cough You had one game Nintendo, one game (Super Smash Bros. 4) that deeply needs cross-play and you blew it. Then show some self control and don't? I don't see why not buying something is so hard. No one's forcing you. "And don't talk to me about transferring games over from Wii because I don't like playing stretched games.". Well you could always have just adjusted your tv's aspect ratio settings to 4:3 and not had to play them stretched, but they fixed that problem in the latest Wii U update anyway. And god forbid you pay a dollar to get new added features even though you can just skip the added features and not pay for the upgrade if you want. rolls eyes Screw the developers!! WE demand it! DO IT!!!! This is a great idea, time for nintendo to adapt ~ I totally agree with you. While I think some consideration should go to what developers think, ultimately it should be what the consumers demand, and what's best for business. I'd think developers would support this type of thing. But some may think it would eat into the money they can make by charging for each download. I would think you'd get more people to buy the titles knowing they could play it on 3DS and Wii U for one proce. But, who really knows what some of these developers/publishers think.
Actually, they fixed that "issue". Your Wii VC games show up in 4:3 ratio in Wii Mode as of the update on Sept. 30. I noticed immediately, because my brother and I play Pokemon Puzzle League every now and then. No more stretching. Anyone else notice it said a PC Vita XD Anyone else notice it said a PC Vita XD One thing I don't understand is the difference of the price of NES games on Wii U and 3DS e-shop. What's to consider? Do it. Depends what annoys you. (For me Sony removing features on an already released product is just totally unacceptable / They burnt me with the Xperia Play as well by lying.) When a company acts like Sony does then you totally don't know what they will do at any time. (With Nintendo and MIcrosoft features are never removed). Judging by past actions Sony might say in a years time all those free PS+ games that we said you could have you could have indefinitely if you joined this you cannot have them anymore because the PS3 is EOL. Can anybody think of a game (Other than VC) where this would be something that anybody would want. All the ones I know where it is the exact same game the 3DS version is garbage. There is stuff like Bit trip saga where the 3DS version is only slightly worse but that is only on Wii Disk or Wiiware afaik. I absolutely welcome this. My last cross-buy title was Spelunky and I got it both for Vita and PS3. It's an awesome thing. Of course I would like to see cross-buy, at the very least for VC games. However, it's not the end of the world if it doesn't happen. I've been gaming Nintendo for over 20 years and never had cross-buy, so I'm used to it. But, if they do ever want to implement something like this, I'd certainly be a little more cavalier with my VC purchases.
You have proven yourself a formidable opponent in the craft of Nintendo debate. Your challengers have all fallen to the wayside, burnt to a crisp...
A good point actually. And it should be noted that many Nintendo games (non-VC) are actually different on each platform. Sonic Colors, Sonic Lost World, Super Smash Bros 4... I'm sure there's others as well. The ONE game I can think of that would benefit from cross-buy, is Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. Especially considering the two games have cross-platform co-op and cross-platform save-transfers. And it's a phenomenal game on both Wii U and 3DS (CPP highly recommended)
Mean company? Dude, they're allowing you to upgrade from the Wii VC version to the overly superior Wii U VC version for a dollar. That's pretty freaking generous actually. And the update fixed the stretching. Original format for all Wii VC games now. Also, Nintendo GIVES AWAY free DLC Fire Emblem Awakening- we got Champions of Yore Map Pack free, then Spotpass weapon/map DLC free on a regular basis for 4 months. Pikmin 3- we just got a Mission Mode map free as DLC. Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, and Animal Crossing- all have received and are still slated to receive free DLC. Nintendo GIVES AWAY free eShop credit with the Digital Deluxe Promotion. They gave away free eShop credit in August just for loading money into your eShop account- you didn't even have to spend it! Nintendo gave away $30 eShop credit for buying Fire Emblem Awakening and SMT 4... I've accrued $65 in eShop credit free from Nintendo just this year alone, along with tons of free DLC for my games. Ambassador Program. Nintendo gave 3DS owners TWENTY free VC games, most of which STILL aren't available for purchase. Good GBA ones too, like Mario Kart Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, F-Zero Maximum Velocity, Fire Emblem Sacred Stones, and Zelda Minish Cap. Zelda Four Swords Adventures and Excitebike 3D. Nintendo gave both these games out for free to 3DS owners last year. Wii U VC 30 Cent Promotion. Nintendo gave us 6 games for just 30 cents each, one of which was Super Metroid. They could have sold that game for $7.99, but they practically gave it away instead. I'd say Nintendo's a pretty nice company. Just remember they ARE a for-profit company though, and that means they must make a profit off you and me to stay in business. That means it's a never ending quest to part you from your coin. Don't take it personal. Cross-play for VC games would get me to buy them more impulsively. They really need to get cross-play sorted for VC games. I would buy so many more games if I could play them on my 3DS and Wii U. If Nintendo makes Cross play happen for Wii U and 3DS, I would go on a Nintendo e Shop shopping spree! I see.
I guess they just want more money I came to realize this when I wanted to buy The lost levels for 3DS, but then I realized I already have it on wii, so I used the money to buy something else. Also, if they ever implement this, I wonder how they will implement it. Perhaps via a firmware update, but then, what about the games you bought on the wii? (wii to wiiu transfer might do the trick...) Honestly, I think I'd rather first have cloud-saves, a proper Club Nintendo game-linked account system; and the ability to buy games for mobile/console games from either eShop, mobile devices, or a computer, and then having them auto-download, so they'll be waiting for me when I want to play them. Cross-Buy purchases would be great for consumers, but, more realistically, I can see this as being an option which would probably be left up to the developers. This'd be fantastic. After I (finally) get my Wii U, I'd be able to download a ton of VC games on it for free. I wonder if that would include the GBA games? Probably not. : You do have a point, but Nintendo nice or not needs to get with the times here and give us a unified account based system(w/ cross buying for VC at the minimum), and stop making excuses/beating around the bush about it. There's a reason Nintendo always seems to be in last in the home console wars(handhelds excluded), and this is one of the reasons why... Not too fussed about this, it's great Sony do it but Nintendo have other priorities-a proper unified account system, games not tied to hardware, and cross-platform VC purchases. I lost 40+ VC/Wiiware games when my Wii got stolen and until the above happens, not one digital penny from me. Stop denying yourself money, Nintendo.
The PS3 has been around nearly 8 years all i see is added features, but yes its a total mystery why thay removed the other OS. I think you would be more at home on a PC, where piracy is easy.
Well, they actually were 1st in the home console wars just last generation. And the generations before that, there was no such thing as VC or online shops. Having said that, I don't think this is an issue that matters as much as people blow it up to be. Yes I'd like to see net-tied accounts over hardware-tied accounts, yes I'd like to see a unified account system with VC cross-buy, yes I'd like to see all that. But there's a lot of things I'd like to see. This is actually not that big of a deal, it's just a big deal in theory, which plays on fear to spread. Now, net-tied accounts are definitely something I'm for. But the main argument in its favor is "What if my console breaks or gets stolen?" The fact of the matter is, this is a total non-issue for the vast majority of us, but fear thrusts this issue to the forefront. I've been gaming a long time, and I've never once had a Nintendo console break on me. Ever. I don't think anyone has actually, save perhaps a very, very small percentage, a negligible number really. You'll have moved onto a new console LONG before your Wii U or 3DS kicks the bucket, and that's a fact, unless you plan on sticking with that one console the rest of your life. 99.9% of everyone who complains about this issue, will never even need it implemented. What makes the issue even less relevant is the fact that you CAN get your content replaced through Nintendo if you have a Club Nintendo account (if you haven't opened one, do it, and link it to your console). It's a hassle, sure, but you will get your content back. Unified accounts will accomplish nothing. It's just a merging of the accounts on 3DS and Wii U. We'll get that when Miiverse comes to 3DS, most likely (one NNID for both systems). Cross buy is cool and all, but without cross-save it's a pointless feature. I know I don't want to start playing the game over from scratch when I switch to a handheld or visa versa. But even with cross-save, all it's doing is saving consumers a little money. And I'm a consumer, I get it, but it's not the end of the world. I dont' NEED to own a game twice. And if I want to own it twice, I probably am willing to shell out an extra $5 to do so. Cross buy would be nice, but make no mistake- it's a luxury, not a necessity. If we're going to rally for a cause, I would think it better to rally for lost or endangered franchises we care about, or rally for Bluetooth headset compatibility, or rally for a Party Chat feature so players can chat during any game, even when playing different games. THESE are issues that matter to me. Not signing in my 3DS with my NNID, not getting Super Mario Bros 3 on my handheld when I buy on Wii U eShop. Don't get me wrong, if I could wave a magic wand and make all those things happen, I WOULD. But I don't think they're worth complaining about all the time. If they change their policy they change their policy. If they don't they don't. But the fact is, Nintendo saves us money in other areas (no online subscription fees, we can sell last gen system to recoup costs since we have backwards compatibility, no proprietary memory cards like the $100 Vita memory card, etc...) Sony and MS have so many paywalls and extra expenses, they can fund giving games away with cross-buy. Nintendo isn't getting monthly fees from us or $100 for 3DS memory cards. Just because Nintendo isn't doing something Sony is doing, doesn't mean we should complain about it all the time. There's a lot of things Nintendo DOES do that Sony DOESN'T, so it's give and take. Cross buy isn't a God-given right just cause Sony does it with a few games (and it is just a few). I mean Nintendo does backwards compatibility and free online, but that doesn't mean it's the industry standard just cause Nintendo does it. Sony doesn't care if Nintendo does it. They have their own policies and that's what they're going to follow. The same applies for Nintendo. How about fixing it so we can have accounts linked to what we buy!
None of this linked to the console crap! : I disagree. I think we should have the best of all worlds. Combine what conviences have been already done in the past and present and make them part of the future. In other words, take Sony's network ID/crossbuy, and add the nice things Nintendo has already done for us and make this our VERY NEAR future for their current systems. There's absolutely no reason to not provide us the consumers with as many conviences as possible. Sure cross save would be cool, but I don't believe even Sony has done this yet. But it's wasteful to have to buy the same exact game twice, VC or not. I don't know about you, but I don't like to just throw my money away. With PS+ and Crossbuy PS3 has stole this generation for me everyone else lags behind with their model. They should totally do this with Smash Bros. And yes i know ot wont work. Virtual Console games should definitely have this feature. I don't want to repurchase the classics every system generation. There needs to be an account system if they want to keep pushing the eShop has a viable option.
That why you don't buy the same game twice. They expect you to have common sense and buy it for either the 3DS or Wii U, but not both. Buy it once and leave it. Yes, it would be nice to have cross-buy, but I agree with . It's a luxury. Video games in general are a luxury. Also, cross-buy goes hand in hand with an account system, which alot of people complaining apparently don't know. It's beyond me how people don't even know how this stuff is implemented, yet ask for such features. Asking for cross-buy and acounts as separate things proves to me that many people don't even know how such features are supposed to work. Having lost 40 VC/Wiiware downloads when my Wii got stolen, a proper ID-centric online account system is an essential to me. My PS3 was stolen, I replaced it, signed in to PSN, downloaded all my old games. I replaced my Wii, no such luck. Unacceptable. Sony, Google, Apple, Amazon, Kobo, everyone else I have digital content with manages to tie it to an account but Nintendo can't. It's an issue for Nintendo because until it's fixed, my Eshop purchases will be pretty much nonexistent. As a company that currently exists to sell games, that's not good. I am not about bothered about piracy (Other than if anti piracy measures affect me in a negative way in any way shape or form). The otheros was the main thing about the PS3 I was interested in though. (Reading the IBM articles about programming it which are pretty damn good). If they removed it for newer revisions I would be ok with that as well. They did rip me off with the Xperia Play (£500 sim free when it first came out). PS1 games and a firmware update to Android 4.0 were both promised. It got a total of 8 PS1 games and the firmware update never happened. (Which means newer stuff that supports the standard Android gamepad mapping won't work.) The compass also has a manufacturing defect they won't fix that. They always choose proprietary memory or anything different to anybody else. Other than blu ray which they broke for everybody. (Impossible to skip just to the actual film if you want to watch it - loads of messing around) Microsoft - RROD fix no matter the age of the console because it is a manufacturing defect.
Nintendo dual layer disks won't work - fix as it a manufacturing defect.
Sony their own firmware update bricks consoles - charge £80. (No manufacturer other than them would ever do that). (I have not actively looked for other instances but there is other well known ones. They have changed their mind about charging for online after for ages saying we will never be doing that. They are scum). If you look at Neo Geo earliest and last releases something similar should have happened with the PS3 (The Neo Geo lasted 14 years). cripes that would be awesome! I think Nintendo should definitely do this, yes. Even if they charged a modest fee for downloading the same game on another device, I would most likely take advantage of it. For example, right now I am not considering getting Smash Bros. on my 3DS at all. However, if I could grab it for $5-10 after purchasing the Wii U version, it would be incredibly tempting, especially if there are decent cross-platform features. Unfortunately, I don't think that's the biggest issue indies have with Nintendo at the moment. how dare you suggest that. Don't you know most gamers are Marxist and don't believe companies should profit for providing a service? Nintendo doesn't do cross buy because Nintendo gamers keep buying their VC games multiple times on multiple systems..... Stop purchasing the same VC games multiple times. Speak with your wallets. &&@$ing and moaning on a message board won't do any good. Blaming the company for wanting to make money is pretty foolish as well. sounds like people didn't read the EULA agreement when purchasing their VC games. Right now Nintendo doesn't have a financial incentive to do it.... And developers certainly won't demand it... Do you really think Capcom would want Nintendo to allow their customers who bought MH3U on their Wii U to download it for free on their 3DS? Yeah I don't see any developer requesting this. The upgrade fee for your VC games is reasonable. You are paying for a much better emulator/features... If you really think the $1.50 is too much, then stick with your Wii version. Nobody is sticking a gun to your head. excellent post and right on the money. Self entitled gamer syndrome. People think their entitled to something that they are not entitled to.... I would love to have cross buy, but whining on the Internet won't change that. The best way to get Nintendo to listen is to stop buying the same game on multiple systems. By buying the same game twice they are actually incentivizing Nintendo to stick with the policy. Personally I'm downloading VC games that are more suited for long play sessions on Wii U (Metroid, Zelda, etc) while downloading VC games best for short bursts of play (Mario/Excitebike) on the 3DS : It's not about common sense, it's about convience! I like having the game on my big screen on the Wii, and having on the go on my 3DS. You shouldn't have to pay twice for the same thing. What's so hard to understand that? That's funny, because EVERY hdtv I have ever owned or looked into owning CAN be put into 4:3 when running in 1080p. Please tell me the mythical model of tv you are using that doesn't let you.
Yeah, I just checked the specs on the two TV's you gave model numbers for and they both allow it. And every Phillips model allows it. Stop talking out YOUR "arsh" and learn how to operate your TV. Then all these problems caused by your own stupidity will disappear. But since you've resorted to insults and insinuating I'm poor, I know you don't have an argument and are just trolling. And for the record, I have 3 HDTVs in my house right now that all allow that. It's in the aspect ratio settings. Learn to use them. Leave A Comment Hold on there, you need to to post a comment...
Related Articles
"Thank you for using our service"

CNET Outlines Console Purchase Choices And Highlights Wii U as a quot Pretty Compelling Buy quot

CNET Outlines Console Purchase Choices And Highlights Wii U as a "Pretty Compelling Buy" Nintendo Life

Different talking head, different outcome by Share: There have been a number of times this year when, sometimes correctly and on other occasions harshly, the Wii U has endured negative coverage and, as a result, subsequent issues with its public image. We've had — and still have, to a degree — issues with awareness, while some dry spells of software have combined with poor sales figures to undermine its chances. Though opinion will naturally be divided on the matter, it can certainly be argued that Nintendo's gradually turning the tide of opinion — though we'll know with financial results in January whether that translates to strong sales. There's been a price drop and some good value bundles, a noticeable increase in marketing and the overwhelmingly positive reaction to . Those factors — along with the growing roster of games — have perhaps boosted the system's image as a viable and worthwhile Holiday season purchase. In the most vital shopping period of the year, Nintendo's console may be getting closer to some shopping wishlists. CNET, the prominent technology consumer outlet, has had some positive words for Wii U in its recent video titled "Xbox or PS4? Maybe that's the wrong question"; after outlining the options of Sony and Microsoft's new systems, the Wii U is cited for its expanded library and increasingly high-quality library, and also for the fact it's retailing for less than the PS4 and One. It's in stark contrast to feature, which labelled the Wii U a "dud" in its list with the damning line, "there are only two game consoles anyone wants this year, and the Wii U isn't one of them." The most recent assessment, from a different talking head, is rather different. To quote the close of the latest video — "timing is everything". on Share: Comments ) Cnet giveth and Cnet taketh away. One article is based on demand and excitement and the other is based on the console's actual merits. Well, it's a good thing they aren't afraid to contradict each other. The inclusion of the Wii U on the "worst tech gifts" list was an excessively negative assessment about the console, especially considering the Wii U's holiday line-up is clearly superior to the other consoles's launch line-ups. These video feels like it comes from someone who isn't a "gamer" and therefore not invested in any particular "brands". The other cnet felt like it was coming from a gamer (with baggage). Interesting takes. I want to buy Xbone due to its camera (only). But then I look at their games... I am interested in none of them. Even reviewers wanted to hate the new Mario and they just couldn't it's too hilarious and sucks everyone in Wow, what a 180 after that cnet worst holiday gifts. And believe me when I say, that the 180 was needed. The only thing that will save the Wii U is great first party titles. These titles saved the 3DS the exact same way. Nintendo seems to get it, SM3DW kicked off the AAA run, and they've got some really great system sellers set for 2014. Then, hopefully people can discover the existing gems like Pikmin 3 and W101, create some network effects, and get third parties to at least put a little effort into their ports (or gasp develop for Wii U first and maybe even bring some exclusives). All is not lost for 3DS's big brother yet, that much we can be certain of. Urgh CNET, watched a video of theirs once called 3DS vs Vita. Was so poorly informative, contradictory and blatantly one sided that I can't take anything they say seriously. I said I wouldn't get a Wii U.............now I got one, I am converted! Keep the games coming along and job done I say! people have no idea anymore, it's all about people preferences now. I love Nintendo, so I support Nintendo, about that simple! Maybe the only other console I'm considering is Xbox One,but that won't be a any time soon purchase, I rather wait 2 years and get the games and system cheaper CNet is not so great for gaming, really good for stuff like TV's. I wonder if the first guy who said the WiiU was one of the worst holiday gifts even did any research about the actual games? Maybe he should educate himself before trying to educate the public……we can all agree Nintendo has messed up in certain aspects but the games it has now speak an abundance plus the games that are being released next year is bananas…software selld hardware period…Nintendo should take this opportunity and improve their marketing and keep their release dates and the gamers will come. Same goes for PS & XB barely and this is supposed to be the prime time of the wii u. It's all downhill from here excluding smash bros. and the next zelda which will probably be 3 years away. Is it any different with CVG, IGN, Kotaku, Game Trailers, or Polygon? They all have staff with varying opinions, some that clash with the management or the games that are advertised on their sites. Also, I would say an opinion formed of the Xbox One and PS4 on the first couple of plays by a journo is probably a bit different when they have one with very little new quality content at launch and a bunch of small glitches and missing services. Nintendo has been battling imaginary future machines that now exist and aren't as all destroying as first thought. Cnet says there are two consoles this year everyone wants and the Wii u isn't one of them, but I'm pretty sure the xbox one is the one nobody wants I think is talking about reviews like this from Game Central here: They start the review off with this line:
"Super Mario 3D World is not the best game ever made. Which is about as far as we have to go in order to say anything negative about it"
...and then go on about the constant game saving messages, lol! I've seen alot of reviews on other sites which are similar and sound more like the reviewer wants to hate the game, but can't find a good enough reason to do so. They showed The Last Of Us when talking about the PS4. Isn't TLOU a PS3 title though? Honestly, anyone who is open minded and not a droid can see Wii U is a console worth owning. Its not perfect, but is by no means a "dud." Its all about who you ask. Anyone who is open minded will tell you all consoles are worth owning.
Only 2 of those matter.
While Bayonetta 2 and X are going to be great they will both sell terrible.
You forgot Smash, Smash is worth mentioning. and yesterday they said "Wii U is not the console you should buy this holiday season" Which one is it CNET ? Yeah, backpedal now, CNET. Now that Sony's and Microsoft's space heaters are out and causing havoc and not having any good games, yet. Wii U would sell like hot cakes but the problem is that it's not for sale at most retailers. If I want one, there's only Argos or ToysRus, or GAME that still sell the console and it's games. None of others "There are only two game consoles anyone (who doesn't actually play video games) wants this year, and the Wii U isn't one of them." The head talking head at CNET should make sure their content is congruent if you ask me. You did, right? Barely? How can you even say that? I have the PS4 and I have not purchased a single game for it yet, there just aren't any worth buying right now… and I mean none. why would you get a brand new system for a multi platform game that you can already get on the system you own?? The Wii U's lineup for this holiday season is far better than XB1 or PS4, and they are only releasing 1 new game that we know of, but there is still the existing library of Wii games that you can play on it and the recently released titles like W101, Pikmin 3, Deus Ex: HR DC ( I know you can get it on other consoles, but I can't see it being better than it is on the Wii U and I played the original), Sonic Lost World, Mario and Sonic @ Sochi, Wind Waker HD, CoD: Ghosts (again already available on other platforms), AC4, Wii Party U and the gobs of great indie titles on the eShop. I can, almost entirely on my 10 fingers, count the titles coming out for the XB1 and the PS4, that are exclusive… that's a lame launch lineup if you ask me, but you didn't. PS4 - Knack, KZ:SF, Resogun, Warframe, Blacklight: R.
XB1 - Ryse, Forza, KI ( I think), CD, DR3, Lococycle, Fighter within. Wii U is certainly a better buy right now than PS4 or Xbone. You didn't see the review where they couldn't think of any negatives about the game so they came up with... I think it was the escapist review of 3D Mario World
Pros: awesome game blah blah, looks great blah blah, best game this holiday blah blah But the cons were hilarious,
Cons: Multiplayer doesn't add anything, Bowser is still the antagonist Seriously? Bowse being the big bad guy is a negative? Welcome to every single mario game, besides SMB2. Seems like a seriously foolish negative to put on this game. They are reaching so far to come up with a negative that they pulled a hamstring. Dudes its Value for money One $499, cont $99 $50 online and then one game $99 add it all up!
Guys its like the old PC days CPUVid cards ran the software now its the reverse software runs the hardware and Nintendo's famous saying is "its the games guys"
Mid 2014 will be the icing on the cake, Nintendo get the quality games out! With the superb critical acclaim of 3D World I can only hope that the Wii U sales will improve in result of that. The coming weeks will be interesting that is for sure. I agree. I have thought from day one that the media has done more damage to the Wii U and it's sales than the unit or Nintendo has done themselves. Yes, there was a drought after release. But this is what happens with every system since the Genesis. The media has built this huge bandwagon that everyone who thinks they know anything (but clearly doesn't) was itching to jump on. Nintendo has been the giant in the industry since its rebirth in 1985. And everyone in the public eye knows that the best way to get noticed is to take on and take down the big hairy giant. This is why I believe there are so many people who publicly would love to see Nintendo fail. The fact of the matter is, that the media has, until very recently, made every effort to jump on the bandwagon to take Nintendo down, whether they know the first thing about it or not. And parents, the 60 - 70% of people who actually make the purchase, listen to what they hear. Add to that problem the fact that half the people who work at Best Buy or Gamestop ALSO don't know the facts. And who do they listen to? The idiots in the media who don't know what they're talking about. So, it's no wonder why the Wii U isn't selling. I have never, in my 35 years of following this industry, witnessed such an unfair media lambasting of an actually very good platform. Never. And look at the absolute fiasco of the XB1? There was about a week of noise from the media. And it wasn't even that harsh. And it went away. And how about the absolute lackluster launch games for XB1 and PS4? Not a word in the press. Why? Because if anyone in the media took Sony or Microsoft to task, they know they would have serious financial reprecutions form the makers themselves and public backlash from the foul-mannered fanboys in each camp. But Nintendo? Nintendo is that gentle giant that all the kids that got picked on in school loved to take a cheap shot at cuz they knew he wouldn't fight back. Yes, Nintendo has had some issues with their release schedule. But not that much worse than any platform release in the last 35 years. The media has a lot to blame for an unfair representation of the system and their effect on uneducated buyers. Now it's time for the media to redeem themselves and actually suggest the most logical value proposition for gamers and their parents this year. The Wii U has THE highest rated game of all platforms (new and old) going into the holiday buying season. It has 2 unbeatable bundles that are $100 and $200 less than the new platforms. They are in stock. And they actually work. Let's see you come clean media talking heads! Nintendo has a running history of defying the odds. There's a reason I keep supporting them (well, there are many reasons, but to name them all would require a Wall O' Text). At the top of my really short Christmas list is a Wii U Limited Edition Skylanders SWAP Force Basic Pack, which is the perfect way for me personally to start having fun with Wii U. We WiiU owners are the best advertisers for Nintendo. To increase the install base, have a couple of friends over and play Mario together. Then show them Miiverse, etc...I'm trying to convert as many people as I can to buy the system for a few reasons. It has the best games to play right now. Free Internet connection. Backwards compatible. Off tv play. I'm compelled to sell WiiU's to silence all the naysayers, and spread the joy of the system. Have a WiiU Mario 3D party! Just don't expect any commission from Reggie. CNET is not good for anything. The parent company forced them to change their product of the year as they didn't like it. (Think its a TV Network). The only ones I trust are print publications who have some interest in being known as impartial. (Otherwise they would lose the readership completely.) Best advertisement for me was the kiosk set up in walmart. The gamepad looked terribly uncomfortable. Them having new super mario bros wii u demo on the console sold them a unit, and got them an advocate for the system. I thought the same thing about the wiimotes. Guess I need to quit doubting and wait until I hold these things Great comment. I agree it just seems like the hate has been flying around even though people don't know much about it. I have purchased 16 games for Wii U in it's first year and i continue to see people claiming Wii U has no games. The internet tells people to not be sheep and hate Nintendo so they do lol.
In all of it I find it extremely encouraging that Nintendo continues to do it's thing and while they are making changes, they're not getting caught up in the negativity. You reminded me of a great point! Thank you! Yes, I too am looking at my video game collection sitting right across from me. I count 8 Wii U games. To only 1 PS3 and 1 XBOX360 game purchased in the last year. And seriously, I'm a gamer. End of story. I have no allegiances at all. Nintendo just has extremely high quality games. There are great games on all platforms. But when I look at how many games I buy, and look at where they're played on, it's pretty profound. It's easy to let the games speak for themselves. Yes I too am very happy with how Nintendo holds themselves in the public eye. I have wrote about this many times and I feel strongly about it. There is not one hardware manufacturer (or software publisher) that acts with the humility as Nintendo. And none of their competitors come even close to matching the amount of time they take to communicate directly to their consumers. This is a very important part of my argument that the media had a good part to play in the massive "misinformation campaign" against the Wii U... Nintendo Direct started before the Wii U was released. Well before. In their Nintendo Directs (and even E3), the Wii U was explained numerous times, in numerous ways for anyone who chose to listen. You seriously had to be a full-on noob gamer or poindexter to NOT get what the Wii U was about. What's not to get?! It's a new game system. With a huge touch screen that can have other "stuff" on it to control "stuff" in the game. And you can play games on the TV OR on the screen. And it has Mario. What's confusing? To this day, I refuse to believe the media professionals who all cried that the Wii U was confusing actually believed it. They just wanted to jump on the bandwagon and use the gentle giant as a punching bag so their talking head could rise above the rest of talking heads. And to top it off, the same media "professionals" all cried armageddon when Metroid and HD Zelda weren't announced or formally shown at E3. Seriously? Do we think Nintendo will never bring Metroid out? Zelda HD is coming. Metroid will come. Star Fox will come. To cry about games like this not coming out when they want ALL AT ONCE is just immature and unprofessional. Any industry professional who doesn't get the pacing and art of portfolio management is either too junior, has a bias or just wants to be a mouthpiece and make their mark. And through all of this, Nintendo, as you suggested, just quietly goes about their business crafting the best hardware and software - for the fans! After all this ranting going on all I have to say which you state that you have but 1 game per system and the Wii U more? Dude I had the Wii U and had 1 or 2 games why because most of the 3rd Party titles that was on the Wii U was already on the "Other" consoles I have besides Nintendo and sadly half of them Nintendo titles wasn't even my cup of tea. Ok I'm a gamer also but I like variety I don't want the same Nintendo "Quality" titles every year besides Star Fox/F-Zero and a few others which I barley see. As for the media they keep trashing Nintendo because they aren't doing as they promised. Nintendo was the ones at e3 2012 stated the following that they system was going to be more of an Core based platform which was further from the truth. This whole year was their free pass to prove to the masses why should we want to buy a Wii U before the PS4/XBone launch and did they succeed sad to say not really except for SM3DW probably. Regardless Nintendo has been doing stupid decisions half of the year and was trying so hard to pull that casual audience which isn't coming back but also pushing away the core demographic and as well was more on the 3DS success track than getting poor Wii U out of the hole. So I know you probably rant on me about this comment and guess what it's the truth and there's more to say but i'm not trying to start a argument but i'm tired of people keep stating that Nintendo shouldn't deserve criticism so every other game company or businesses while get criticized for the wrong decisions they do but Nintendo shouldn't??? It's a company they going to get criticism remember PS3 and Sony they got criticized worst than Nintendo and they made a comeback why not Nintendo. Alas a hint of criticism of why no account system wasn't put in place for the 3DS/Wii U because NOBODY except the small minority of people from the Nintendo "camp" criticized them about it and there's more on the subject but i'll keep that to myself. Ahhhh... A rant for a rant. That's cool. Mine has a little better punctuation though. You seem to contradict yourself a bit, unfortunately. You state that Nintendo abandoned the core gamer and that you want more variety than just quality Nintendo 1st party games. Well, the system released with several games that were on other systems. Sooo.... how is that abandoning the core gamer? Isn't that kind of APPEALING to the core gamer? What else would you have them do to appeal to the core gamer? They have 1st party games that no one else can replicate AND they had more quality 3rd party games than any other launch. I don't see your problem. OK, so they have games that are on the other systems you own. The PS4 has games that XB1 has. The PS3 has games that XB360 has. What's your point? But none of them have games that Nintendo has. Nintendo has to make games for people who want to own only one system. And for people who have more than one system. I can't say that they've done a poor job. They came out strong out of the gate with a better launch line up by far than the PS4 or XB1 combined. What happened was, because systems didn't move, their 3rd party support dropped. They were depending on that 3rd party support and their pacing of 1st party releases reflected that. So when 3rd party support dropped, they were caught a bit with their pants down. And, in my opinion, that's what made a typical post-launch drought a longer one. So what wrong "decisions" did Nintendo make to justify the ridicule by the media?! The media were on the Wii U from before release. And most of it were, "I don't get it". Which I addressed in my rant above. So what decisions dude?! And because Nintendo is so humble an organization, they didn't lash back but just said they have to do better. So what else are they going to say? It's not their culture to trash other companies, the media or make excuses. The only decision that I can fault Nintendo for - and I've been vocal about this as well - is that they should have released the Wii U last year with Mario U bundled. They haven't launched a system bundled with a Mario game from day one since the SNES - and that was the last time they were #1. Sony Considering Purchase of Factory That Manufactured Wii U eDRAM

Sony Considering Purchase of Factory That Manufactured Wii U eDRAM

Sony Considering Purchase of Factory That Manufactured Wii U eDRAM Nintendo Life

Not really a DRAMa by Share: Occasionally we post news articles not necessarily to reveal anything thrilling, but to try and steady uncertainty making its way around the web that, potentially, isn't quite based on solid ground. When dealing with issues of manufacturing embedded DRAM for Wii U consoles in Japan, figuring out the realities of a situation is unsurprisingly tricky. In any case, there are reports that Sony is in talks with Renesas Electronics Corp over a potential purchase of the company's Tsuruoka factory; this is to ramp up production of Sony's CMOS technology, a smartphone camera sensor that's a major earner for the company. As reports, Sony's exploring the option of purchasing this plant alongside the alternative of building its own new facilities elsewhere; at this stage they're only initial discussions. Why's this relevant for Nintendo? It is and it likely isn't. You may have seen reports and comments around the web that the Wii U's embedded DRAM component is manufactured at the factory in question, but it seems that Nintendo's previously shifted production of the component to another major manufacturing company called TMSC. Frankly, the source for this points to Nikkei's home page, but links and online conversations from that time (August 2013) suggest it happened. Solid, reliable news on this is hard to come by for a simple reason; this is everyday manufacturing business. Plants close, re-prioritise or otherwise, and companies such as Nintendo always look for efficiency savings and the best manufacturing opportunities to cut costs — just observe how the 3DS (even after its heavy price cut in 2011) went from a manufacturing loss to profitability in the second half of 2012. So there are two scenarios that we can see: Nintendo's eDRAM manufacturing has indeed switched to TSMC and this potential Sony purchase has little to no relevance, or in the event of the potential purchase impacting manufacturing, Nintendo will move elsewhere or strike a deal with Sony; it's likely got a good stockpile of the part in question, too. The latter (deal with Sony or change) seems unlikely in light of the TSMC angle, but it should also be acknowledged that major companies work together and contract each other regularly; they may compete with products, but the nitty-gritting of manufacturing sees corporate behemoths often sharing contracts with each other. Bearing all of that in mind, and the fact that Renesas initially began to discuss closure and selling the facility back in August, it's highly unlikely this will be an issue for Wii U manufacturing. It's notable that not one of the Japanese industry sources reporting on this potential Sony acquisition (that we were able to translate) mention Nintendo in any way, reinforcing that this is a standard part of manufacturing business. Unless we hear otherwise with compelling evidence, we'd suggest that reports on this matter shouldn't overly concern Nintendo fans. [source , via , ] Share: Comments ) I cant wait To play SM3DW your gunna love it man, its awsome! Hopefully the new factory nintendo use won't employ 7 year olds. I, too, can't wait to play Super Mario 3D World. Playing previous Mario games for the majority of this month leading up to Christmas when I'll finally play it , your attention to detail is as always, very apparent. I shall not worry. But... Should I worry now that my day one Renesas outfitted Wii U is any little bit less quality than a TSMC? Considering how much Apple manufacturing is done by Samsung while Apple is suing Samsung for bilions of $ I wouldn't worry at all about who owns what factory. And Sony and Nintendo get along a whole lot better than Apple and Samsung. yeah! super mario 3D world is extemely fun, extremely beautiful and a really great purchase. my family and I are in love with it haha. Listen to the squirrel... DRAMa receives a downvote Can of worms, opened...
I literally couldn't wait til Xmas to play it and sold some stuff to buy it on Sunday. While I do want to get the game, I cannot help but think that this plays a lot like 3D Land.......But I'll still get the game.....eventually :/ lol im waiting for xmas going to "buy" it for the wife im waiting a few more weeks many are saying its one of the best of all time meaning its up there with mario 64 and galaxy....get it! That's because it is. I have every single Mario (excluding Virtual Boy games) to date and played all of them. I can concur this is certainly better than Galaxy (which is saying a lot) in my opinion. Still, my favorite 2 Marios are SMB3 and SMB World. I believe this game ranks up there with those 2 and Mario 64. But no matter what, I still think 64 was the best and my personal favorite. But then again, its opinions. Also have you played all 200 mario games or you're just talking about super mario series? Cause I barely reached 100!!!!!!! And I still have to get the Wii U super mario's which is the only super mario section left for me. Dram manufacturing would not be done at the same factory as camera sensors, complete different processes......all they have in common is they're both made in tech labs. Just to shut that door I have actually rarely seen Sony and Nintendo at each other's throats since the fallout in the 90s that lead to the Playstation. They've actually been kind to each other. If edram is when it is on the same die how can it be done by anybody other than who makes the CPU ? Have you got the Hudson one ? When you finished 3D World did you get any sort of contentment or did you still want more ? (When I finished 3 and World properly then that was enough for me for quite a while - I never get that with Nintendo produced Mario games any more don't know whether it is by design or not. I did get it with Donkey Kong Country Returns when I finished it completely). id be interested to hear thoughts on this The biggest question I have is since Nintendo was able to Optimize the RAM really well, will Sony, if they purchase the company, now have access to the Specs of the Chip? your doing yourself a disfavor of holding off on this title. It is nothing like 3D Land,.. The only thing the two have in common is the word 3D in the title. The level design is just amazing.... I think we are seeing some of the very best EAD Tokyo has done. I still play several levels a day even though I beat the regular campaign last week... It's that good. I went back to play Galaxy and Galaxy 2 today and SM3DW could be the best 3d Mario to date. If Nintendo ever announces dlc for it, say goodnight. It would take the crown. how are those 7 year olds going to afford to feed their families? they're just kids, poor things! shame on you I said I'll get the game ok. I too am excited for this game a LOT and I do want to play it but its still not out in Dubai yet and after seeing from how long to beat site, the game sounds very short. But I WILL GET THE GAME STILL!! AS SOON AS ITS OUT IN DUBAI because my Dad said it wasn't there yet. Sounds like Sony's typical strategy. Sony is like the two-faced cheerleader in highschool.
