Well, if that’s so, then the browser extension called CloudMagic deserves at least a look-see and maybe an install. CloudMagic as the name implies, is all about the services on the cloud. The magic is that it is a super-fast way to search across multiple services. We are always searching for something. These days it’s probably less about our lives and more on the web. Well, if that’s so, then the browser extension called deserves at least a look-see and maybe an install. CloudMagic as the name implies, is all about the services on the cloud. The magic is that it is a super-fast way to search across multiple services - Twitter, Gmail, Google Apps Email, Google Docs, Calendar, and Contacts. Plus, CloudMagic does it all on a unified single interface. We search with our browsers. That’s why it makes sense to have a search app on our browser of choice. CloudMagic is a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox. It is supported on Windows XP and above, Mac OS X 10.5+ & Linux (32- & 64-bit) kernel versions 2.4.x and above. I am trying out CloudMagic 3.11 Beta on Firefox which is a 2.9 MB install. <h2> Setting It Up With Your Accounts</h2> There’s nothing much to do really. You install the browser extension and add your accounts for the respective services. CloudMagic goes to work indexing all the data in the services you have authenticated…and it’s fast. CloudMagic supports multiple accounts. That’s nice, but what’s nicer is that CloudMagic stores all log-in details and the indexed data locally. That’s a few extra points for security, privacy, and peace of mind. <h2> Super-Fast Instant Search…&amp All In One Place</h2> Search should be at express speed. Nor arguments on that. No arguments also because CloudMagic search IS fast. As you can see that the magic all happens from the little floating box which makes an appearance when you log-in to one of your accounts. You can bolster the search further by playing around with the settings on view. You can open up separate search windows, replace your default search (for e.g. Gmail’s search), or click on Preferences and put a check against Enable combined search. Remember: As the data is indexed and kept locally, you can search through your multiple accounts even in the offline mode and also when you aren’t logged into the other registered accounts. I think that’s a pretty powerful option to have especially for your services on the cloud. Here’s how a search appears. You can click on those orange colored highlighted keywords and open up a preview of the document that has it. You can click on the Events, Docs, Contacts, and Tweets tab to get the search hits on those apps. I find it especially useful when I want to quickly look up a contact or a document in Google Docs. That’s a plus because CloudMagic helps you search n’ work so smoothly between Gmail and Google Docs and across all your accounts registered with CloudMagic. I am not going to get Steve Jobs in my Contacts, but definitely there are some mentions on my Twitter feed. Another thing you will immediately notice is that CloudMagic goes to work immediately as you start typing. That helps you to narrow down on the right kind of search by trying out partial keywords. <h2> For Power Users – The Advanced Search Operators</h2> CloudMagic supports the same advanced search operators as Google and Twitter thus giving power users another spanner to work with. You can use it from the regular search box itself. When it comes to YouTube, I personally use the popular video service for four or five different purposes, including embedding interesting video content into my blog, researching information and sometimes just to sit back and watch random and entertaining videos. To do this, I usually just open up yet another tab in my browser and start doing a YouTube search. However, it would be really useful to have a desktop app to just search YouTube and access everything from the site that I could access from my own YouTube account. Back in 2006, Aibek actually reviewed an app like this called FireAnt, but this and we've covered at MUO are mostly intended to download YouTube videos to the local computer. There are lots of cool desktop video programs out there, such as Hulu Desktop. But since I spend most of my time pouring through YouTube for cool content, I was really excited to discover Desktube.TV, which is exclusive to only YouTube videos. <h2> YouTube Search From Your Desktop</h2> I've tried a lot of desktop video programs like , mostly for watching Internet TV, but Desktube.tv is one of the first programs I've found that not only focuses on YouTube, but also integrates really well with many of the features you normally access with your YouTube account, such as adding to or browsing your playlists, viewing and adding to your subscriptions and more. When you install and run Desktube.tv, you'll see a main display that actually looks a bit like the individual channel pages you'll find on YouTube. The main video view screen is on the left, but you can resize this to fill the top half of the window, the entire window or even your entire computer screen. If you want to access all of the features, like playlists and the social networking areas of YouTube, click on any of those personalized features like "Subscriptions" and the program will automatically ask you to log into your YouTube account. Once you're in, you can access and change any of the playlist videos, subscriptions, and favorites stored on your YouTube account. Browsing through videos is really simple - just use the scroll arrows on the right side of the video list display. YouTube search functionality is available by typing in your search phrase into the search box next to the DeskTube logo. All of the resulting videos are displayed in the bottom pane, just scroll left or right to browse through all of them. For any video displayed in the main display pane, you also have access to YouTube's commenting system if you're logged into your account. Just quickly type in your comment and click the "Post" button, and your comment will instantly appear for that video on the YouTube website. The right pane of the video display features all of the information and stats about the video you're watching. In a lot of ways this information is more accessible in DeskTube than it is from the YouTube website itself. With a quick glance, you can see total video and channel views, user rating, the summary and a quick Subscribe button to add this channel to your YouTube account. My favorite feature are the three buttons at the bottom of the right information panel. With the click of a button, you can favorite the video, share it via email or add it to your playlist. Since I use the on my blog, I update my playlist constantly, and this feature is really useful for that. When you share a video via email, the pop-up screen makes it fast and easy to fire off a cool video to a friend without the need for an email client or a browser. DeskTube.tv is a pretty useful desktop application if you tend to use YouTube a lot and you'd like to free up some space on your browser tab bar. Not only is the application available for Windows, Linux and Mac, but the DeskTube website also promises that there will be a similar mobile app available for the Android and iPhone. That will be a more difficult niche to capture because there are so many mobile YouTube viewers available, but if all of these features are included, it has a pretty good chance of catching on. So, give DeskTube.tv a try and start using YouTube more often, whether or not you're actively browsing the Internet. We have shared quite a few of them already, including tools that let you quickly , plugins that support search suggestions and Firefox addons that let you . Today's one is pretty much unique: I for one have never seen anything similar. Search Everywhere [No Longer Available] is a great FireFox addon that allows you to search over the content linked from your web browser's current page. In essence, it works as follows. Imagine you land on a page that links to a number of related resources - and you want to search within these linked resources; Click the tool icon in the status bar, type your search term and hit "Search" The tool will extract the linked domains (or URLs depending on your settings); Then the tool will that will search for your keyword within the extracted domains / URLs. Here's a simple example from the developer to explain how it can turn really useful: ...suppose you are hanging out at the Dapper Rat website, and become interested in cages for pet rats. The Dapper Rat has a terrific page of pointing to reliable pet rat information. You need a search engine that searches over this reliable information. That is exactly what the Search Everywhere toolbar does, using a Linked CSE. That being said, the tool seems to be a great help when you want to find most relevant results from the websites listed on a links page or in a web directory. Now that we are clear with how the tool works, let's look over its options. <h2> Search Everywhere Options</h2> As I have already said, to trigger the search field, you need to click the icon in the status bar (sadly, there's no keyboard shortcut for that): Within the toolbar there are a few handy options: SiteSearch: Run a simple SITE: search to narrow results to the current domain (instead of searching within linked content). To learn more about Google's SITE: search operator, check out this post by Saikat Basu: New Tab: When checked, this prompts to display the search results in a new tab. URL Extraction: Exact: Use extracted URLs without modification, to create a very "narrow" search engine (this will restrict search results to exact URLs you see on the current page). Paths: Use the host and path from an extracted URL, but omit any filenames (like the above one but allowing a bit broader search). For MUO, for example, it would mean searching within https://www.makeuseof.com/dir/ (which is our directory). Hosts: Use only the domains from extracted URLs to create a "broad" search engine. Extraction modifiers: Filter: When checked, this option is supposed to filter out certain overly-dominant URL patterns (I am not sure I got this one to work; I wish we could set the filters manually) Boost exact: This allows combination of host or path URL extraction, with an extra layer of exact URL extraction. We've seen how to use to search within PDF files, but if you already have PDF-XChange Viewer, Foxit or even Adobe Reader, did you know you can already search for text inside PDF documents without additional programs? I didn't know this so I thought it might be something good to share. This might be useful too, if you own a large collection of e-books in PDF. I know I have a few copies of the free manuals that MakeUseOf distributes, plus a lot of PDFs for each of my classes so knowing my preferred PDF viewer can do this is tremendously useful. <h2> Windows </h2> Even with its free version, PDF-XChange Viewer has . I've been using it for quite some time and absolutely adore the fact that you can customize keyboard shortcuts for any function. However, I didn't realize you could use it to search entire directories until after searching all over the web for a PDF document search tool. It turns out the Search feature in PDF-XChange is pretty powerful and fast. You can either go to the Edit menu > Search or go to the drop-down menu for the Find feature. You'll see a sidebar on the right of the open PDF file. What is really neat is that if you have several PDF documents open in tabs, you can search through all of those open files, or only the current PDF. You can also specify a directory. In the Options buttons, you can also choose to search bookmarks and comments. In the search term box, you can also use the drop-down menu to navigate to the Advanced Search function, which you can use to exclude words, include exact phrases, etc. Once you've completed the search, any result you click on will open up the respective file with the search term highlighted. <h2> Cross-Platform </h2> We have seen to Adobe Reader, including a , but if you'd rather stick with Adobe's product, you can easily use the Full Reader Search (which you can invoke by pressing Ctrl + Shift + F) from the Find function's drop-down menu or by heading to Edit > Search. Like PDF-XChange, you will then able to search for text inside PDF documents in your specified locations. After the search has returned results, clicking on any of them will open up the respective PDF file with the search term highlighted on the correct page. If you want to preview or open up the results from different PDF files though, Adobe Reader will open them in separate windows since it doesn't support tabbed documents. What's very impressive though, even more so than my beloved PDF-XChange Viewer's Advanced Search, which has plenty for very specific searches. <h2> Windows Linux </h2> Foxit Reader is extremely popular! This lightweight viewer also has the Search function in the Find drop-down menu and under the Tools menu. Similar to PDF-XChange, you'll also see a sidebar on the right of the open PDF file, you can specify whether to look in the current document or in a specific directory, and the functionality will be really fast. Unlike PDF-XChange however, you aren't offered the option to search in all currently open PDF files. It's worth mentioning that if you don't have any of these readers but you're on a Windows computer, you can actually use Windows Desktop Search (the one you get from pressing Win key + F) to look for text within PDF files with the help of the Adobe PDF iFilter for and . If you do have the latest version of Adobe Reader, it will have bundled the iFilter add-in so you can use Windows Search to index PDF file contents without any problems. One of the most interesting (comparatively) new methods currently being developed by companies around the web revolves around the idea of using images as a basis for search queries. Of course we already have a plethora of as well as other fun search tools we have been reviewing from time to time, but most of them have one thing in common: the keyword comes first: we use words to search. This post is about another type of search: where an image comes first. By using images as a basis for queries the new advanced image search tools coming out of development are able to provide a totally different (beyond the ) type of experience. As the technology is still in its infancy, various developers are working on specific kinds of practical applications for this type of search. The three services that I think currently put the concept to its best uses are: <h2> 1 BYO Image Search Lab</h2> The BYO Image Search Lab was one of the earliest image-based search engines to appear online. Users can: either use a base image from their PC as a starting point for a search, or they can use a URL path from an online image instead. The engine than produces a batch of relatively similar pictures based primarily on the color similarity, though it does have some success when it comes to prioritizing results that match or contain similar elements (form and theme similarity). <h2> 2 Gazopa</h2> Following hot on the heels of BYO comes G which, like its rival, is a tool for matching images with similar ones. Like with BYO, user's can either upload a picture or get one from the Internet to initiate the search. However, it seems that by basing its results more on shape outlines than color, the results shown are a lot more like the original image searched for (as compared to the above tool): <h2> 3 TinEye</h2> (find the MUO ) is a tool being developed by the same company behind BYO (IdÃe). It is available as an for the four major browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari), which, when installed, allows users to search for images on the web that exactly match the image used to start the search. TinEye seems to be focused on exact matches (looking for images that look exactly the same). TinEye can tell if pictures at a different resolution still match the initial query, which makes it a really great piece of software for keeping track of any copyrighted or personal (potentially embarrassing) images of yours that may be circulating around the web. So how can you actually use these tools? The opportunities are plenty: Use these tools to check who has stolen your copyright images; Use these tools to track down people's avatars and find more places to connect to them; Use these tools to check where the competition is buying advertising space. One solution is to take advantage of mobile job search tools so that you can hunt for new job opportunities while you're riding the subway or the bus, or you're sitting in the waiting room. <h2> Conduct an Android Job Search</h2> After numerous unpaid furloughs and forced "vacation management," I started exploring the job market to see how much things have changed over the past decade or so. Not only did I discover new exciting opportunities, but thanks to the explosion of the Internet, but I also discovered an awesome mobile tool on the Android Market for job hunting called Hire A Droid. This is quite the little powerhouse, because it hunts through multiple job search engines and returns all of the results to you to review and apply for. The search screen is very intuitive and even offers operator buttons like "AND", "OR" and "NOT" to aid you in stringing together effective search queries. You can choose from any one of 18 countries to perform your search. Best of all, this job search app lets you save your previous search queries so that if you search for the same keywords every day (as most people do), this feature will let you conduct the same search with a single click. The search listings that Hire A Droid turns up is pretty comprehensive, coming from major job search resources like LinkUp, SimplyHired, Indeed and CareerBuilder. When you want to save time by hunting for jobs across a wide range of sources, this is the app that you'll want. Where other mobile job search apps turn up no results, Hire A Droid will often turn up listings. Almost every search I tried turned up at least some listings, and a lot depends on the area that you're searching as well. Within each listing you'll see the job title, date posted, the company name and the location. If you want some more details, just click once 0n any of the job ads and it'll drop down with more information. When you click on any of the extended details, you'll end up on the application page for that employer. This page may look different for every job listing. You'll typically always see a detailed review of the position. Additionally you'll usually have several application options available. For example, in one case I found an ad that lets you email the listing to yourself or to a friend, or you have the opportunity to instantly submit your resume for the job. In another listing, I was whisked to a page that looked pretty much like the employer website, but contained within the Hire-A-Droid app. Even in this case, there was the option to either apply immediately while online, or email the listing. In most cases you will probably want to just email the listing to yourself so that you can apply once you're home and back at your computer. Obviously, Hire A Droid is easily the best choice of any available mobile job search app in the Android market because it covers so many job search engines at once. Much like Twitter and Facebook, Yelp appears to be the next major social network climbing up in the ranks. Jerry previously wrote about the Yelp iPhone app, where you could search for highly rated local restaurants to eat at near your location. In fact, numerous MakeUseOf readers have often mentioned Yelp. Personally, I thought Yelp was just another small fad social network attempting to build itself up upon the concept of mobile reviews of local businesses. The reality is that Yelp is now much more than that. The community is now set up much like Facebook, with profiles and friends, but the heart of this particular network is the review process. Beyond searching for local businesses, members earn a certain status the more they review businesses. The stronger your status, the more other people pay attention to what you have to say. Are we entering an electronic era where the highest rated Yelp reviewers will be as revered by local businesses as the fine dining newspaper columnists were back in the day? Maybe not yet, but things seem headed in that direction. <h3>Yelp Helps You Out &amp Lets You Help Others</h3> I have to admit, I learned about Yelp by accident. I was actually using a completely different mobile app on my Android called Where. Where is a pretty cool little app that almost acts like a mobile Yellow Pages - where you can search for local businesses through listings for local restaurants, shopping and more. I used Where a few times while I was traveling with the family, and noticed that each of the businesses had a little link labeled "Yelp Review." I wondered what a Yelp review was, and made a mental note to check it out when I got back home. Once I did, I was surprised to learn that it was a booming social network filled with user reviews for businesses in the US, Canada, Ireland and UK. Once I learned about the Yelp mobile app for Android, I switched to using it immediately. I have two favorite parts of Yelp - the ease with which you can quickly search for local businesses as well as something to do in your area, and the awesome social network of people who are out there actively reviewing local businesses. Searching for local businesses is as simple as either typing a keyword or typing in your town. The fastest approach is typing your location so that Yelp can offer a listing of local businesses that have already been reviewed (as well as those that haven't yet - if you feel like writing your own review.) The listings include the business name, a quick reference for the rating (from 1 to 5 stars) as well as the address and phone number. The most recent reviewer's comments are included on the listing page as well - so you can briefly get an idea of the business just from the listing page. Once you click on the business name, you'll get all of the details, including average price range, parking, whether there's waiter service or if the business offers delivery. There's even a cool slideshow of photos for most of the businesses listed in Yelp. The restaurant above is one near me called DiMillo's - my wife and I had one of our anniversary dinners there. It's literally a floating restaurant, permanently at dock in Portland Maine's Old Port. I may just post my own review! <h3>The Yelp Community</h3> The number of Yelp reviewers are growing exponentially, and reading through the review section for any business is very entertaining. You'll often see some reviewers going after the review of another reviewer - correcting it or explaining why they are wrong. For some communities, where tourism is critical, reviews can really make or break the business - and many local business owners are starting to take online reviews from popular sites like Yelp very seriously. However, what businesses are learning is that the best way to ward off negative reviews is to develop a loyal customer base who are ready and willing to defend your good name and testify to the quality of your service or product. Communities like Yelp that encourage local folks to review businesses are really driving local businesses to excel and compete. You'll notice that the profile page for reviewers is much like a Facebook profile, except instead of status updates you have the main column with the user's latest reviews. Other community members can actually rate those reviews as useful, funny or cool and they can forward reviews to friends. This approach keeps the reviewers themselves honest - because no one is going to give much credit to a reviewer who the rest of the community feels they offer poor reviews. Best of all, on the main Yelp page you'll see a link for "Yelp Mobile." Here, you'll find mobile versions of Yelp for just about every major mobile device - iPhone, BlackBerry, Droid and Palm Pre. I've downloaded it to my Droid (as you can see above), and plan on using it any time we travel and we're pressed to find a good local place to eat. Now you no longer have to ask the clerk at the front desk of the hotel where there are any good places to eat - just pull out your mobile phone and check out what all of the locals have to say. This is my first digital camera and I am really adding up serious clicking mileage with it. A basic camera teaches us about the basics of photography. And didn't someone say that no photographer is as good as the simplest camera? Someone also said this anonymously - buying a Nikon doesn't make you a photographer. It just makes you a Nikon owner. Just like a singer has to train his voice, a photographer needs to train his eyes. Thanks to the Internet, we can become invisible apprentices to the shutterbugs who have clicked before us. A click of the mouse can take us to a lot of web resources where we can learn about photography without spending the cost of a film. As it was with me, my lack of confidence in myself as a shutterbug-to-be was matched by my lack of confidence in my basic camera. How effective could my low priced point and shoot be? To unlearn that, I waded into the web searching for images clicked using the same camera. In the process, I unlearned a lot, and learned a lot about angles, focus, light, and color composition. But most of all I am learning how to capture the mood of a particular moment. There are many ways we can search for photos by camera in Flickr and Picasa. It not only makes for great lessons but it is a handy comparative tool if you are deciding between various camera models. Here are two of the very best - one that has been around and the other that has just arrived. <h3>Search by Camera in Flickr</h3> Flickr is a melting pot of and as a result you will get all kinds of shots from all kinds of cameras. The tool is great for making an open minded judgment of a photo and a camera. The Camera Finder is like an index of all cameras that have been used to click the photos in Flickr's database. Flickr does this from the EXIF meta-data that's part of the photos. If you are planning to buy a camera, the trends as shown in the graph could give you an idea. You can click on any camera brand/model and check out the specs. But as a photographer, I am interested in what my point and shooter shows for itself in Flickr. On the , select the brand from the dropdown and click on Go. Flickr lists all the camera models by brand and make, as used in the Flickr community. Find your camera model in the list and click on that to go into the camera's page. You can search for images using keywords in the search field. Alternatively, you can explore content using the dropdown. For instance, I am learning a lot about using Flickr. Clicking on the photo-thumbnail takes you into the photostream. On that page, you can check out a lot of other details (i.e. the EXIF data), all arranged under Additional Information. Many photos, shot using a point and shoot are tagged with the Flickr Award too! <h3>Search By Camera From Picasa</h3> After the stopover at Flickr, Picasa could be number two on your list. A worthwhile visit because Picasa Web Albums has just added the Search by Camera feature to help us out. Searching by camera models is not as much an information mine as Flickr but it's a nice tool nonetheless. Login to your Picasa Web Album account with a Google ID. Search for images with a keyword. Click on Show Options which expands to display all the filters. Click on Any camera - Camera Model. Enter the make of your camera as it suggests them with an auto-complete. Click on Search and you get all images clicked using that model of camera. You can check out the EXIF data for each photo, which is not as detailed as in Flickr. <h3>A Normal Google Image Search</h3> We usually fall back to Google Search without a moment's pause but in this case at least, the above two services come out on top. Searching through the tons of Google Search results is cumbersome. In the post - , I had mentioned a normal image search using a camera type as the keyword. I had also mentioned a service like which lets you select a camera model for the image search. Junknstuff doesn't seem to be working right now. Of course, the glitch could be temporary and you can check back into it. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. In the case of photography, though no two photos can be exactly the same, the proverb still holds true. As these two tools might well prove, imitation can be the shortest path to learning too. Starting with my original Nintendo Entertainment System way back when. Now I just mail in my warranty card and chuck the manual. No I am not a mad man or a lunatic - it is simply a different time we live in than back then. Now almost anything can be found on the internet - and Manuals Online has you covered when it comes to owner manuals and user guides. When you arrive at the site you will see something that looks like this: To search for a product enter its name or model number into the search field. A generic search will give you LOTS of results and a model number will usually result in one or two items. I decided to search for a DustBuster. I typed in Dustbuster and hit Search. I got back 4 items for four different models. You can download the manual as a PDF, save it to your folder on their website (requires registration), you can also view forum discussions about your item as well. I got a little more specific and typed in Sony Play Station 2. I got a few results and chose the model I was looking for. I was then able to preview the owner manual and eventually downloaded it. I could also ask members for help or share information about the product. You can see below the item's additional product literature. In this case it looks like the quick start guide but it can vary from product to product. Upon opening the document it will display the PDF in your browser. You can also save the file by right clicking on the link and choosing "save target as". Alright so who's ready to go clean out their attic/filing cabinet? In , search patterns far surpass those for other free ad services such as Kijiji or USFreeAds. Much of the power of the multitude of Craigslists are that while they certainly cover local communities, the lists are spread throughout the entire world. With Craigslist, it's just as easy to search through electronics for sale in Poland as it is to search for auto parts for sale in Greece. The scope of the Craigslist database is just staggering. However, this size also represents a significant search problem. While it's fairly easy to search through listings within a specific city or town, how do you search listings posted throughout an entire country, or even the entire world? <h2> Solving The Craigslist Search Dilemma</h2> Everyone who has ever used Craigslist knows that the site is about as non-user friendly as it could possibly be. The front page consists of nothing more than a huge listing of locations that stretch from the U.S. all the way throughout Europe and Asia. The front page offers not a single search feature. Instead, you must select a location first, and then you can search. A few MakeUseOf articles have covered some potential solutions, such as CLHack which lets you . However, by far the best free tool I've found for searching all of the Craigslists is the free CraigsList Reader by Motion Technologies. <h2> Overview of The CraigsList Reader</h2> The CraigsList Reader is a well written application that allows users to drill through the entire database of Craigslists, based on any search criteria whatsoever. The application is aesthetically impressive considering it's a completely free application. Search results are displayed in the pane to the right, and individual ad content is displayed in the panel below it. The Reader offers users a comprehensive search based on categories, geographic locations, and even subcategories and ranges (such as price ranges) depending on which category you choose. The selection boxes at the lower left hand portion of the screen allow you to select which demographics and categories to search through, view your saved favorites from previous searches, set up notifications (see below), or configure your Craigslist Reader options. This is also the corner of the screen where you can view the search status and number of results as the Reader application sifts through the millions of Craigslist listings. <h2> How It Works</h2> The power of this application really comes out when you start using it. While the search itself can take a fair amount of time depending on the number of connections you allow (consider the fact that it's sifting through millions of ads across the world), the results are more useful than anything you'll find trying to sift through the website yourself. For example, whenever I'm hungry for writing work, I will often search the entire world for writing gigs. While this may sound like a bit of a stretch, I've found some of my best clients in countries like China, Australia, and even Ireland. The Craigslist Reader is useful for local searches as well, but when you can do work on a global scale, this application can really come in handy. The results for such a search typically take about 20 minutes or more to complete (with 5 connections), but by the time it's finished there are thousands of results to sift through. While doing manual searches yourself can provide a lot of opportunities, eventually you'll make it to the bottom of the list. At that point, the real game on Craigslist is getting to the opportunity faster than anyone else. That's where the "notifications" feature of Craigslist Reader is useful. When you click the "Add as Notification" box before performing a search, you can add that search to your notification list. What that means is that the Craigslist Reader will repeat the search as often as you tell it to, and when there are any new results, it will immediately notify you through a display, sound, or even an email alert. This is an excellent feature, especially if you're in a highly competitive industry and need to jump on opportunities before your competition. You can also tweak the Craigslists search by modifying the application options. The key feature in the Options section is the ability to modify how many connections, or threads, you want to allow the application to use. This lets you scale back the bandwidth that the Craigslist Reader uses if you want to just let it run in the background while you surf the Internet. By carefully selecting the right thread count, you can tweak the Reader to make the most efficient use of your broadband Internet connection. <h2> Why Craigslist Reader is Unique</h2> While there are a number of web based and application based Craigslist readers out there, Motion Technologies really nailed it with this particular free reader. The search capacity, bug-free features, and the ability to tweak the application and alert settings to your particular needs sets this reader well above the rest. Since it's been refined further with access to more sources of information than ever before. You can access Spotlight from any Mac by hitting command+spacebar, or by clicking on the magnifying glass icon in the top-right corner of your screen. Here are a few tips to help you find more on your Mac. <h2> Now With Internet</h2> OS X Yosemite heralded a new age of Spotlight – one that has access to the Internet and can perform more intelligent queries than ever before. It also takes pride of place in the centre of the screen and allows you to search the web (with Bing), news headlines, maps, iTunes, the App Store, what Apple deems "top websites" and movie showtimes (in some regions). Another included service you can use to quickly look up facts and figures is Wikipedia, which features abridged versions of full articles highlighting some of the most sought-after information for those respective searches. Think things like capital cities and population for countries and plot summaries for films. You might find that Wikipedia (and other web queries) take a second or two to show up, so have patience when searching. If Wikipedia doesn't show up as an option, I've found typing your search term followed by "wiki" does the trick – e.g. "dog wiki". <h2> Do More Than Search</h2> Apple didn't just power-up Spotlight with a load of online features, they also improved its offline abilities as well. One of the best additions in OS X Yosemite is the ability to use Spotlight as a converter – input your conversion as you would in Google and you'll see the result right there in the middle of the screen. It works well for simple weight and measurement conversions, like "10kg in pounds" or "6km in miles" or "29c in f". It's also an effective way of looking up currency conversion rates, like "10 usd in aud" or "100,000 kronor in gbp" – but be aware that not all currencies are supported (). Spotlight can also help you do instant math without launching the calculator. Just enter the calculation you would like in the usual format – "7*7" or "49/7" are two I hope you'll never have to type. More complex calculations like square roots and trigonometric functions save you a trip to the calculator. Word definitions are another trick. Type your word and scroll down to the Define field. While many of these tricks might seem simple, particularly as they can all be performed with Google, performing the query on your desktop has the added advantage of not being distracted by advertising, interesting search results and ensures you can still work offline. <h2> Use Booleans Metadata &amp Add Criteria</h2> It helps to know what you aren't looking for when trying to find that elusive file, particularly if your query returns a lot of search results. Simple boolean operators AND, OR and NOT can be added to your query to include or exclude items. You can also use the minus symbol (-) to exclude items. These are particularly helpful when paired with metadata attributes, like kind, author, date, modified, created and so on. As an example, a search for "created:1/1/15 NOT kind:messages" would list all files created on your Mac on New Year's Day, except for email and chat messages. While this is the quickest way of searching, you can be more hands-on by typing your search then choosing Show All in Finder. Location, search queries, and usage information sent to Apple will be used by Apple only to make Spotlight Suggestions more relevant and to improve other Apple products and services. To stop this, head to System Preferences > Spotlight and disable Spotlight Suggestions and Bing Web Searches.
