By Getty Images Los Angeles , 23 May 2018 06:00 AM America/Los_Angeles
News 4 San Antonio Investigative Reporter Donates Kidney to Brother
News 4 Investigative reporter Jaie Avila recently took a break from covering scams and corruption to report a different kind of story: a personal account about giving a kidney to his older brother. In the story, the News 4 San Antonio Trouble Shooter said he always looked up to his older brother, Jim Avila, a veteran reporter for ABC News, who has traveled the globe to cover breaking news. "He's a big reason I got into Journalism," Jaie Avila told News 4. "An Award winning senior correspondent with ABC News, he always seemed indestructible. But earlier this year, we learned his kidneys were rapidly failing due to diabetes." Years before, the brothers watched their father's health decline rapidly when his kidneys failed. So as soon as Jim Avila was diagnosed, he was determined to avoid dialysis and began looking into getting a kidney transplant at the Cedars-Sinai Comprehensive Transplant Center. Patients who don't have a living donor can wait years for a kidney transplant. But family members, including Jim Avila's three children, quickly volunteered to give Jim one of their kidneys. Receiving a kidney from a sibling – as opposed to a different relative -- often leads to more successful outcomes so Jaie Avila flew to Los Angeles for testing. The tests revealed the brothers were a good match. A few weeks later, the Avila brothers underwent the transplant surgeries in side-by-side operating rooms. Within a few days, Jim Avila left Cedars-Sinai with his new kidney. "I wouldn't have lived, I mean Jaie -- Jaie and my kids -- saved my life," Jim Avila told News 4. "There's no way I could have done six to eight years on dialysis. We had a big race to get this done before dialysis and we won the race which is great." Click here to watch the entire News 4 San Antonio story.
Contact the Media Team
Email: news[email protected]

News 4 San Antonio Investigative Reporter Donates Kidney to Brother Share on: Twitter Share on: Facebook Share on: LinkedIn
Search Our Newsroom

Social media
Visit our Facebook page (opens in new window) Follow us on Twitter (opens in new window) Visit our Youtube profile (opens in new window) (opens in new window)
Latest news
07 Oct 2022 - HealthDay: Black Women Less Likely to Get Laparoscopic Fibroid Surgeries 07 Oct 2022 - Faculty Publications: Sept. 29-Oct. 6 07 Oct 2022 - Fine-Tuning Organ-Chip Technology 06 Oct 2022 - KCRW: Want New Omicron Booster? News Report Reveals Resi Evil: Mercenaries 3D's Release Date Nintendo Life

Axe no questions by Share: This just in: the upcoming carnage featured in Capcom's has made it onto UK news channels. The latest report comes from RETV, with more footage of the outbreak of over-the-top violence as well as the first shots of experienced zombie-fighter Rebecca Chambers. The rash of zombie attacks is expected to reach a head when the 3DS game reaches North America on 28th June 2011. Expect more on this as it unfolds. on Related Games Share: Comments ) Cool, Rebecca! I think I'll stick to Claire though. Lol! Great ending. wahey not long now I knew Rebecca was in it a while ago but shes still a good addition. Btw european release date? And the 26th August for the UK, According to Amazon:
Wow. Nice. Rebecca Chambers... Mmmm... <3<3<3 I didn't even see that coming.. lol freakin awesome. i hope it has an option for stylus control, i suck with controls like on re5 That was F....d up. Interesting ending, but it's odd that he apparently didn't notice the newswoman getting killed there. Bloody hell, that was cool! Especially the ending! Can´t wait! Btw, good to be back! Wha ha haa...
(see Screenshot number 10) Why has Chris aged and not Rebecca? If this is set in the present day, why does Rebecca still look like her 18 year old self from 1998? That was actually wonderfully cheezy! : I think you're looking into it a bit too much. 9 days after Zelda...Kind of a weird move by Capcom if you ask me. Cave Story 3D was pushed back to August 9th most likely because they knew it would be suicide to release it a week after Zelda. Cheese! Loved the end! That trailer should be in 3D. Farewell, my wallet. I rarely knew thee. I did not see this coming.... woohoo! cannot wait for this game--first 3DS game who's online functionality i'm gonna use a lot. Hopefully I'll be done w/ OoT before it comes out. Yeah, the 3DS is a quote, "Kiddie System" Yeah right,,,,, And this is one of the best commercials for a video game I've ever seen I think it's alright. Resident Evil could do fine since it's currently the only shooter for the summer (I think); the only thing that could be a turn off is the M 17+ rating for those parents who bought a 3DS for their kids. But all the people I know who own a 3DS bought it themselves and they're waiting for this game lol Wait, Chambers was the one with the Flame Spray melee, right? Frick yeah. RE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! These 2 games are the reason I got the 3DS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! uughhhh cant it release sooner? Man what a drag James, where did you buy your Pun-O-Matic 9000? I want one. Game is looking good. They removed the game mode from RE4 here, will this game get released in Germany at all? News on Etrian Odyssey Devil Survivor 2 Expected In Next Famitsu

News on Etrian Odyssey, Devil Survivor 2 Expected In Next Famitsu Nintendo Life

More RPG goodness on the way for 3DS owners? by Share: While fans in the West are just forging into or eagerly awaiting its arrival, time marches on in Japan: news on what’s next for the series is expected to arrive soon. Tweets from Atlus Japan have teased an announcement regarding the Etrian Odyssey series which will appear in the March 28th issue of Famitsu. Details on the 3DS version of Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 are also said to be featured. Etrian Odyssey IV was released in Japan in July 2012, making announcement of a new instalment possible, but not confirmed. With the increasingly warm welcome that both Atlus franchises (and don’t forget Fire Emblem!) are receiving on western shores, it only stands to reason that more eyes will be turning toward Japan for info on what’s to come. Would you be keen to get your hands on a new Etrian Odyssey? Or is Shin Megami Tensei more your cup of tea? Post a comment to let us know. [source , via ] Share: Comments ) Could be for the Wii U; the GamePad adds new possibilities for games like EO that work best with a second screen. Not to say I don't want another for my 3DS; IV is amazing, and I really need to finish my second playthrough. So much fun, especially with the open storyline. You can create your own little add ins, making every playthrough unique depending on the characters you create. Didn't Devil Survivor 2 come out not long ago for the DS? They already want to do a remake? Seems a little early to make an announcement for EO5, maybe it's a compilation game this time? I don't think it'll be a console port of 4 though...it'd be odd without changing the environments around and improving the animations considerably (the viewpoint may need to be changed, I guarantee someone will complain about the first person view for a console version). Ooooh cool. I still need to get EOlV! If they keep on making Etrian Odyssey games, I'll keep on buying them. I still need to complete II and play III & IV though! Perhaps a Spin-off game??? Or new DLC for EOIV??? I really hope the enhanced version of Devil Survivor 2 arrives to America too... Atlus is growing as my favourite 3rd party publisher on 3DS. I already have 4 of their releases, cant wait to have Soul Hackers, SMT4 and Persona. =) Etrian Odyssey V for Wii U? I'll take both... I finished EOIV a week or so ago, and would love another one already. I got Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked a while back and I love it. Haven't finished it yet, but I'll definitely get the second installment. I'm not very interested in Etrian Odyssey. I pkayed the first one and didn't enjoy it much. On the other hand DS2 is something that draws my attention even though I have yet to play the first one (waiting to its release in Europe). Talking about Atlus, I finished Radiant Historia today (all 236 nodes). It is one hell of a game, one of ds' best. I'm glad I imported it. : regarding RH completion, congratulations! definitely one of the best DS games for sure! :3 I'm hoping That Fantasy Life will be announced soon for North America an Europe and will have online Co-op. I'm getting Etrian Odyssey next week and Monster Hunter on 3DS. It has been a great month for 3DS owners. Even Picdun 2 which is a cheapy simplistic Eshop game has tons of fun to be had You should try Etrian Odyssey IV's demo. The series has improved significantly over the years. I'm a huge fan of both franchises and I'm so glad it's (finally) taking in EU. The fact that so little Shin Megami Tensei games came to EU is so difficult to understand (especially considering the success the Persona series is enjoying). So my wish list for christmas, Atlus, is :Etrian Odyssey trilogy for 3DS (in Europe please)Etrian Odyssey V (3DS or Wii U, your choice)Shin Megami Tensei 1 and 2 remaked and released everywhereFinally confirmation that SMT4 is coming to the west (not sure if it's been confirmed or not)
... And while you're at it, please localise the last FE installment on DS It might seem like its to early for a new game announcement but it will take at least a year to make assuming they have already started on it. That would make it two years apart in Japan and more then likely 2 years here as well! I'm up for a new one but I can also see it making a jump to Wii u or elsewhere perhaps. That would force me to finally pick one up. Still hoping both stay right where they're at!! I just want a EU release date for EOIV, I can't allow myself to get excited about another instalment before that. Etrian Odyssey trilogy for 3DS with access to all the character classes on all the games and the additions made in EO IV. One can dream. Yeah, I've enjoyed a lot. Is Knights in the Nightmare nearly as good? It's quite expensive on ebay thus I am hesitant about it. when we get it in EU I'll download it for sure.I even downloaded Farming Simulator demo (not worth it). I'm just much more interested in Soul Hackers, Devil Survivor, Fire Emblem, DQVII and Bravely Default. I won't ever have enough time for EOIV. Hmmm... Etrian Odyssey IV is on a whole other level than EO1. If you can, play the demo at least. If nothing else, I can guarantee you'll like it more than EO1. New Etrian Odyssey please
Also Knights in the Nightmare is great. totally different from RH, but fun. Not sure how expensive we're talking though as I wouldn't pay TOO much for it. Better be a game and I hope its for 3DS. Still have to finish 4 though....got stuck at a couple of FOES I can't get last in the thrid dungeon so I took a break(and then Luigis mansion and PMD came out) but I will finish it because its a fun game. Picked up Etrian Odyssey IV a few weeks ago and have totally enjoyed it thus far. I'd love to see what they have in store in the future. Fair enough. I care more for Etrian Odyssey than those other games, but there ARE a lot of good titles out at this time. I haven't played Knights of the Nightmare, but it has worse reviews than Radiant Historia. so far i am totally enjoying etrian odyssey. a whole brand new one would be sooner than necessary though, maybe it will be some kind of dlc? that would be cool. from what i can tell, previous entries are EXACTLY the same as this one but not as cool, so any re-release of those as-is i am not that interested in.
Etrian Odyssey trilogy for 3DS (in Europe please)
Etrian Odyssey V (3DS or Wii U, your choice) really dont see a reason to remake 1-3 on the 3ds when you can play Ds games on the 3ds so i doubt you ever seen them remade (i think they just reprinted them on the ds so that is another strike against seeing them on the 3ds) im sure we will see part 5 on the 3ds Sad thing is wont be till 2015 in the west love them to remake devil 2 for the 3ds and add in extra days like they did for the first one well i look forward to getting devil survivor 2 for the 3ds, still on the first one though i would of finish it long ago if i didnt play any other games. A new EO for 3DS?!?! Yes!
And I look forward to SMT and FE I love the EO series and own most SMT games. I actually find that the SMT games just don't grasp my attention for long. Got a PSV to play Persona 4 and never got into it. But any news of more game options is always welcome, especially RPG's. News Site Claims That Zelda quot Takes A Dim View Of Workers People Of Colour And Women quot

News Site Claims That Zelda "Takes A Dim View Of Workers, People Of Colour And Women" Nintendo Life

Best not mention GTA, then by Share: You might assume that time spent in the mythical land of Hyrule is unlikely to cause anybody any undue distress, but according to some, that simply isn't the case. News and entertainment site — which has a monthly unique readership of 15 million — has controversially branded "sexist", "racist" and "classist". Author Jon Hochschartner explains that he's a fan of the game, but then goes on to point out the various things the N64 classic does wrong. The supposed "crimes" make for depressing reading — mainly because we never thought anyone could read so much into a video game before: This year marks the 15th anniversary of the release of "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.” Critics frequently laud the Nintendo 64 title as the greatest video game ever. And yet the ways it deals with class, race, gender and animal rights are all deeply problematic. Hochschartner's analysis begins fairly meekly, picking up on the subject of class: The relationship between the self-described “boss” of the carpenters and those he calls “my workers,” appears to be one of a guild member and apprentices or journeymen. The boss refers to himself as a master craftsman, and says the workers were hired by the royal family to improve the village. Karl Marx described this relationship as one of “oppressor and oppressed,” comparing it to that of “freeman and slave, patrician and plebeian, (and) lord and serf.” “Ocarina” portrays the apprentices or journeymen as lazy and shiftless, and the boss as the only one willing to work. “Young men these days don’t have any ambition,” the boss says. “Do you know what I mean, kid? My workers are just running aimlessly around the village, and they’re not making any progress at all … Even my own son doesn’t have a job, and he just wanders around all day! They’re all worthless, I tell you!” Hochschartner then picks up on the racial undertones which everyone else seems to have missed: The racial, ethnic and religious traits of the “good characters” and the “bad characters” within the game also demonstrate a certain xenophobia. All of the good characters, such as the Hylians and Kokiri, are white. In contrast, all of the bad characters, such as the thieving Gerudo and their king, Ganondorf, have brown skin. The Gerudo live in the desert, and in case it wasn’t clear what real-life group of people they are based on, the original Gerudo symbol is strongly reminiscent of the Islamic star and crescent. There's also the prickly topic of sexism to contend with: The title’s perspective on sex is arguably summarized in an advertisement for “Ocarina,” which asks, “Willst thou get the girl? Or play like one?” The game utilizes a damsel-in-distress trope that suggests women are weak and in need of male protection. Just like in every other game in the series, Princess Zelda is incapacitated and in need of rescue from the central character, Link. The repeated use of this sexist cliché helps to, as Sarkeesian [Feminist Frequency blogger Anita Sarkeesian] says, “normalize extremely toxic, patronizing, and paternalistic attitudes.” For a portion of the game’s plot, Zelda is represented as an imposing warrior. But, as Sarkeesian points out, she is only able to achieve this disguised as a man and she’s kidnapped within minutes of revealing her true identity. He doesn't stop there, however — The Legend of Zelda is also apparently unfair to animals, too: In the game, domestication is portrayed as a mutually beneficial, voluntary arrangement. The anthropomorphized cows of Hyrule speak to Link, literally saying, “Have some of my refreshing and nutritious milk!” Of course depicting a relationship as anything like symbiotic when one party kills and eats the other, as well as the latter’s children, would be laughable if it weren’t so appalling. Is Hochschartner digging for stuff that simply doesn't exist, or does he have a point? The longer you analyse something, the more you tend to find — even if it's stuff that wasn't really intentional in the first place. Rumours that he turned down a role in The Hobbit to work on Nintendo Life are, to the best of our knowledge, completely and utterly unfounded. Comments ) Is this a joke? Like really? This guy is throwing shots at a widely popular and well received game. He needs to stop. Ocarina of Time 3D had good themes. It doesn't have bad themes. Wow. This is hilarious how deep this guy is looking into this Let's complain NOW about a game that came out over 10 years ago! I read the article, its just a dumb way to get people to go on their site. "I'm bored, let's find every single odd thing of an old game we can think about and make an article about how evil it is!". They just forgot to find anti-gay propaganda and complain about child labour in the games. Now let me continue my day hating the working class, people of other races, being a macho and eating meat. Wouldn't this article have been better in the 'Weirdness' section? Because it is truly weird. Ya, I think he's "observing" a little TOO close. Insanity and mis-perception is quite a feat, I suppose. How are we supposed to take this seriously? We can't. Is it a joke? I really can't tell Wow. Many of the characters he's referring to are just for comic relief. Not everything needs to be analyzed politically, Nintendo isn't trying to send some subliminal message, they're just trying to create interesting and funny characters. And the ad they're referring to was from the 90's! He is a flammer. Screw him. well the claims are true but 99% of all videogames are either racist, sexist, classist or all of it. btw: you dont have to be a racist to spread racial thinking Playing like a girl isn't an insult. My goodness people have to much time on their hands. But what do you expect from a site called Salon.com
Its just an example of more political correctness out of control Existence itself is "racist" & "sexist". Otherwise we'd be the Borg, which I guess is what these self proclaimed progressive lunatics want. He's a Leftist psychopath. They are all insane on the Left and see the world through "SIXHIRB"-colored glasses.
SIXHIRB = sexist, intolerant, xenophobic, homophobic, Islamophobic, racist, bigoted. Everything falls into one of the categories for the Cult of Leftism. I'm pretty sure that covers just about everyone, then.
The only possible other category would be non-workers... If women are portrayed as "so weak" in the game, explain Impa. If I remember correctly, she was a warrior, and she seemed to me much tougher than all of the Hylian knights. When people can find something so minuscule and make such a huge deal out of it. It makes me think that he is talking about experiences in the area. Like how a ex nazi knows how to spot Jews. Such a world we live in it is a extreme comparison but perfectly on point. Don't take this too seriously guys... the original article is clearly a brilliant mockery of pseudo-intellectual analysis of popular culture. Or just click bait. The racial stuff you could MAAAAYBE count as, at least in terms of the Gerudo (depends on how evil you actually consider them) but everything else is trying way too hard to do...I don't even know what. If you want a good book about the Zelda-Series deals with philosophical themes read The Legend of Zelda & Philosophy. Feminism IS the only part I could agree with him there, apart from Tethra and Impa there are no real strong female main characters in the Zelda-Series. As is with other Nintendo-series, were the protagonists are mainly male. But come on: The Gerudos are thieves and their "king" is the most evil thing you can imagin, but if that guy would have really played the game, he would have seen that they were only be able to overcome Ganon by joining forces with the Gerudos as well, showing that Ganondorf is just an evil individual, not an evil race altogether. And the Islamic depictions were also found in the Goron regions. Deconstructing the worker as Marxist isn't really clever either. The plotwriters aimed for that impression. Any child can tell you that. Can you doom them for it? Not in my opinion. The game doesn't encourage you to whip the workers or enslave them. It's an NPC in the game. If you look up tzo the Master and want to become one yourself it's your decision, but if you listen to the workers you see they suffer from him so much that they want to be thieves in the future. The game shows you that "enslaving" your underlings leads to problems, so it also suggests it would be a better idea to treat them fairly. But the game leaves that up to the player. If you are a Marxist you probably only saw ways to "motivate" your workers by yelling at them, and that you should yell louder so they don't become thieves. The animal part was just ridiculous. No real argumentation line from him there In the end, Hochschartner is just a philosophy student who wants to depict how clever he is by quoting theories to analyze a game, like a snub who just discovered there are other languages and tries to throw in many fancy french words into every conversation he starts to make people around him think he's multicultural, educated and superior to anyone around him. Seems odd to criticize Zelda when there are games out there which are so much worse with these problems. At the same time we shouldn't ignore problems like these, though I do agree the writer blows them out of proportion in regards to zelda. Comparing the scarcly clad, female only group of gerudo to any islamic culture, a culture where woman mostly have to hide themselfes under "bedsheats" in public makes this article as beleavable as capcom saying they care about the MegaMan franchise -.-
And who said that the gerudo are all bad people ? Sure, they imprison you if you invade their territory, but i guess the hylian guards would have done the same if it wasnt for Links young age when he sneaked his way inside the guarded castle.
And guess why the gerudos have a darker taint...they live in a freakin desert ! Seeing how barren the hylian fields are, you can argue that they have a rather cold / mild climate. Thats why most hylians have a light taint.
And whats so special about a boss complaining about his workers doing absolutely nothing on a building site ? My boss would simply explode in rage if we would lay down our work to run around aimlessly doing nothing with our worktime.
Also: OoTs Zelda a damsel in distress ? Kidnapped ? Shes a freaking cross dressing musical ninja girl helping Link to find his way around ! And even then, these "damsels" arent kidnapped because they are girls, they are most often kidnapped beause they are princesses. Its like capturing the presidents daughter / son. You could say "well, then why isnt Zelda a prince?" Whats wrong with a princess ? Would a kidnapped prince really solve any problems ? Everything is racist, sexist, classist, if that is what you are looking for. If you want to have an academic discussion about people's views then fine....but I assume this is nothing more then foder to market his site their is no strong females in real life either at least not physically.
Edit that came out very wrong. What I meant is that their is no reason to add a strong woman in the story if it is not necessary. And strong woman's dosnt just need to be physically. Zelda has always been strong and many others just not in the sense of the world like brocovich. Pretty dumb stuff. What about the Goron as examples of dark-skinned good guys? What makes the boss one with whom we're supposed to identify? And video games as a whole have a problem with sexism, but to point to an advertisement as proof of that is proof of advertising's sexism, not the game itself. I could go on and on. in ocarina of time they're actually not all that evil... They're feared by the hylians because they tend to raid their villages looking for men but when you get to know them in the game they're actually quite nice. Sure, there are worse games, but it's important to have a critical eye on the things we enjoy the most. The author's last paragraph says exactly this: "On this 15th anniversary of the game’s release, I encourage readers to dust off their Nintendo 64 and return to Hyrule. Hike up Death Mountain. Swim in Lake Hylia. Explore the Lost Woods. “Ocarina” is a fantastic piece of art we can enjoy while being aware that, like so much other art, it has a lot of problems." Don't take it so personally. Everyone has blind spots. Yes, Zelda is awesome; also, it has problems. Wut? As far as I know Ingo is the most evil and he is WHITE! Video games are under so much scrutiny nowadays, it's ridiculous. Everyone's got a damn agenda to push. It's pretty bad that this guy is digging up an old game like OoT, when social conventions were much more down to earth and there were different levels of acceptance, to support his political viewpoints of the modern day. It would be like a femenist looking back at some 1930's movie and pointing out all the things they deem sexist, it's just pointless. That's the thing about a work of art like movies or games, they encapsulate the thoughts, feelings, and points made by the creators. So as time goes on it's easy to overanalyze these things and literally see something that isn't actually there. This guy needs to make his point, and he will stop at nothing, even if it's blatantly false. I disagree with you. She could kick your donkey mate. This seems to be a case of perception. He wants to see all these issues because apparently it is his viewpoint of the world. When I look at Ocarina of Time, I see nothing but heroic acts from several characters besides Link. As others mentioned, Impa is a Sheikah warrior (who is a woman) and single handedly imprisoned Bongo Bongo in the Well years ago. And when he is released, she rushes off to the Shadow Temple to fight it again. Ruto, when awakened from the ice, rushes off to the Water Temple to save her people. Nabooru defies all tradition and rebels against the prophesized king. And let's not forget all the men who are prisoned by the Gerudo, that Link has to save. Out of the seven sages, FIVE of them are women. It is the sages who in the end defeat Ganon after all. And I do not understand why Zelda's heroism in the entire game is deemed worthless simply because she is a women masquerading as a man. Everyone is all proud of Sheik, but you find out it's Zelda, and the story turns into one of a damsel in distress!?! Heck, without Zelda/Sheik, Link would probably be dead. Lastly, Ganondorf kidnaps Zelda not when she reveals herself as a woman... but when she reveals the Triforce of Wisdom. That's what he's after, after all. If he knew at that point that Link had the Triforce of Courage, he probably would have kidnapped him too. He is shocked when it shows up on Link's hand at the final battle... I am pretty much tired of people asserting that since the main playable character is a male, the game is rife with sexist sterotypes... As I said, its not that the game has problems... it is that you're looking for them. Can't wait till this guy starts analysing every resident in Animal Crossing! Instead of picking apart a game like the Legend of Zelda, why don't they check out a game like Grand Theft Auto 5. Now there would be something to actually pick apart instead of this rubbish of an article. The suggestion the Ocarina of Time is trying to say- white guys: goodies, anyone of a different ethnicity: baddies- has one iddy bittle little flaw. It was designed by the Japanese. This culture is rotting because of these kinds of confused psychopaths. Pretty ridiculous article. The people who made the game are Japanese. WHY ON EARTH WOULD THEY PORTRAY WHITE PEOPLE AS GOOD AND PEOPLE OF COLOUR AS BAD???
Also, Impa is a main character and she has brown skin so you know.... Sexism? Last I checked Impa, Zelda and Nabooru were pretty strong characters. Also, I'm pretty sure cows that are used for milking aren't used in beef production -_- If your goal is to look for sexism, racism, enslavement, and religious implications, you will find it anywhere. Seriously, look at any other game or movie, it's shocklingly easy to make yourself believe there's something like that there. If you're going in with that mindset, that's what you're going to see, because you're telling yourself that you want to see it. While I think some of the arguments the writer makes are off and wrong in the context of the game, it is flat out wrong to say this is a piece arguing for political correctness. Critiquing power is not what political correctness is attempting to do. It is more to control the language we use, rather than actually critiquing power mechanisms and structures. it kinda looks like she lost her/was born without arms and there's someone behind her posing like it's her arms. Edit afer google: oh wait, it looks like that because it is like that. These are always fun to read. Sensationalist garbage. The original article and this repost. The Gerudo's aren't bad, that's complete journalistic failure. In fact one becomes a sage. I would argue the complete opposite; that this series helped alleviate racism in our world today, more so on the side of Link having to work with people of all different types and not judge them on the basis of whether they had fins or ate rocks. This is so asinine that it doesn't deserves a response. Anyone who cares that much probably shouldn't be playing video games... you'll be offended somehow by every game you'll ever play. : I also meant it philosophically. Ever heard of tomboys? It still has a bad connotation, as do guys who are more sensitive or passive, because they don't fit into the stereotype of a male hero/hunter. I am a little annoyed sometimes by Zelda's "damsel-in-distress" role, however, she's only one of many female characters in the game, which also include Saria, Nabooru, Impa, and Ruto. Also, the sages are intended to represent one of every race in the game. So, Ocarina gives each race equal power, and urges them to work together. And we shouldn't forget that an attempt to perform animal cruelty generally results in a chicken storm. Spot on, that summarizes exactly how he is missing the point, has the journalist even played the game? Thanks I needed a good laugh. i don't think anyone sees what they see. they are the true racist, sexist etc etc. if no one saw it except them, these notions must have been in their minds already. they thought these racist things and projected them onto a video game. morons. BTW: the author also did a similar piece on GTA. I quote: Still, Rockstar’s output represents an increased engagement with class struggle issues that could lead a wider audience to investigate anti-capitalist ideas for themselves. You gotta laugh ANYTHING is racist/sexist/whatever-else-ist if you analyze it THAT MUCH. Sigh. People like this... The idiocy almost hurts... HEY GUYS LET US BLAME ALL OF OUR PROBLEMS ON VIDEO GAMES. I'm all for looking at games through this type of societal lense (and I really like the work Anita Sarkeesian has been doing!), but most of the things mentioned here strike me as a bit silly. EXCEPT... The race issue is completely legitimate. I don't think the developers INTENDED to be racist per se, but SERIOUSLY, just LOOK at the characters. One one side, we have all of the morally righteous characters: Link, Zelda, the Kokiri, the residents of Lon Lon Ranch and Kakariko Villiage... honest, hard working people. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM is white. Now, let's look at the NON WHITE characters... we have the middle-eastern Garudo in the desert (we know they are middle eastern because of the original symbol in the mirror temple), a band of THEVES who live by STEALING FROM OTHERS. And then there's the one truly dark skinned, "black" character in the game: Ganon. Freaking Ganon. I'd never actually noticed it before this article but... no one else sees a problem with this? It's actually quite disturbing... Seriously, reading through the headlines for this salon.com, the whole site seems to be a hive of hardline liberal, "occupy wallstreet" Marxists. If anyone is going to declare the Zelda game series is classist, sexist and/or racist, it'll be them. What planet are they from and how did they receive the intellect to be here? It's not that simple. You have to analyze the situation before you go saying something is racist. They are thieves, not because they want to be, but because they live in a desert without any resources. That is in no way racist. Ganondorf is more green than he is black. The Gerudo people are most likely based off of what a group of people would do if they had no resources and were stuck out in the desert. It's also a fact that skin color has nothing to do with race. It is more based on which area you live in. If you live in a sunnier area, of course you'll have darker skin. It's an adaption, that doesn't make you separate from the human race. Oh man, I had a great laugh at this. Let's not wish that here. -Lz I think that pong is racist because you play as only white bars and can never play as any other colored bar on the arcade version. #Genius!!!! /sarcasm You make a valid point, and that may well have been what Nintendo was thinking when they were designing the game. I certainly don't think they were being purposefully racist, but a lot of racism is subtile and unintentional. What you said notwithstanding, you don't think it's at all odd that these people are literally the ONLY non-white characters in the entire game? . The Zoras are Blue, the Gorons are Tan. I fail to see your point. The Japanese are predominately white, and this game was made there. In the context of the situation, there is no racism other than prejudices that the races have with each other within the game, and that isn't racist, that is part of the lore. He conveniently ignores how Nabooru is a women and a Gerudo and she was a good person. He also ignores how 3 of the sages are women (4 including Zelda) The Gerudo people are portrayed as strong and powerful women. His argument is invalid in every way. The Zoras and Gorons don't look nearly as human, though. Yes, Japan is predominantly white... and yet they did include nonwhite characters, and chose to put them specifically into the morally questionable roles. Roles that are based off of Arabic thieves who lived in the desert and stole from caravans. Your point is still unfounded. This is based off of historic things that actually happened. It is based on specific people who did what they could to survive in the desert. "Best not mention GTA, then"
I think summed it up without having to go into the article at all. Oh God, not ANOTHER "sexism" article on videogames. Let alone made by people who does not know jacks-t. Perception is reality Making issues out of non-issues My cow was deeply offended by the dialog in this game, so I have to agree with this article. Welcome to The New Internet. Any portrayal of any character as any less that self sufficient, strong, and capable of mind means that whatever categories that character can be fitted into are being looked down upon as a whole. All so that the person pointing it out can be granted a moments attention. Da **** did I just read. Aren't they I don't know... a little late.
Hmm, I think it's more green, but that's just me. This is all really stupid but is he really saying that because the cows are seen to have a good relation with people that it must be some kind of joke because we also eat them?? Also no mention of the cukoos(?) that literally kill you for hurting them Does anybody actually read that liberal rag? Why? Why overanalyse a 15 year old game just to bash it? I can understand GTA to some degree (even though I disagree with the non-gaming media on it), but why do so for a game which has done, if any, damage so long ago? Sounds like somebody has too much time on their hands. On closer inspection, this appears to all be a joke, as several seem to have pointed out.
Some funny exaggerations in there as well. And of course quoting Anita Sarkeesian is comedy gold in and of itself. Any game with white main character = racist
Any game with a male main character = sexist
Any game with a human main character = animal cruelty
Any game where the main weapon is a sword = discrimination against guns One thing that gets me about journalists, or people, like this is that they're the ones coming out and saying that women, homosexual people, and people of colour are a minority. Normal people don't think like that. Nobody ever said they were a minority, unless you're the type of person that pays attention to politically driven jerks like this. If anything, he's the racist, sexist bigot for recognizing it so easily. Am I the only person who could tell that Sheik was a girl? I mean it was a surprise to me that it was Princess Zelda, but I could tell she was a girl. The whole time I was playing I kept thinking, why can't I be her, she seems like a more competent character than Link. Five of the seven sages are women! Saria, Ruto, Impa, Nabooru, and Zelda - Women
Rauru and Darunia - Men What a stupid person. It's not that "normal people" don't think like that, but privileged people. These kind of evaluations are GOOD if they open your eyes to the overwhelming preference in Western culture for "people like us." Honestly, I do not understand why almost everyone on this comments section seems so defensive. This stuff is real. It's not that people are looking to find sexism, racism, etc. It's already there. If you can't see it, than the one revealing it is helping you. Does it suck that Zelda is loaded with these harmful classifications? Yes. Have things improved since the 1940s? Yes. Really!?! Read my rant above. I hate how everyone quickly categorizes the game as "Damsel in Distress" when only the very last part has Zelda kidnapped. She was a pivotal character. It was she who pointed Link in the right direction. Without her, he would never have even gotten inside the Forest Temple... It was she who freed Ruto from the ice. And as I said before, her getting kidnapped had nothing to do with revealing she is a woman. She get's kidnapped the moment she reveals that she has the Triforce of Wisdom... since the Triforce is what he wanted. If he had known Link had the Triforce of Courage, he would probably have kidnapped him too. Ganondorf was shocked when it was the Triforce symbol appeared on Link's hand at the end. I don't care if you're a man or a woman... it is kind of hard not to be helpless when a powerful demon-possessed sorceror kidnaps you and places you in a giant hovering crystal. You know you've got some mental issues when you dig this deeply into something just to find flaws that weren't even intentional in design, then proceed to demonize whatever contains them as one of the worst things on earth.
Over 10 Years after it first came out. Yet people don't see it like that. I bet they would make up some other bs if the genders were switched. Every story is a lose-lose situation because there will always be some group that believes life should cater only to them. I don't understand why people don't just admit that they are the racist/sexist problem and be done with it. "Let me search for something that isn't there" 'the overwhelming preference in Western culture for "people like us."' This game was made in the East. This guy must be offended by everything in existence then if he is willing to pick a fifteen year-old GAME apart. Really, he's looking to hard into things. He's just some attention seeker that want's to feel like his existence is validated by having people notice him. Some of the points he makes are incorrect as well. This is just really stupid overall on his part. Clearly. That does not at all diminish my point. When I mentioned Western preference, I was not talking about the game itself, but the way Westerners view cultural examinations. No. Every thing has flaws. If all of the Gerudo were men except an evil FEMALE leader, people would whine. It's not that it is always there in everything it's that racist/sexist people insert it just so they won't feel left out of normal conversation. If I am classified as "privileged" for seeing the truth, then what would "normal" look like? It's because as the West, we not meaning every single one of us just our screwed up country as a whole, feel we can poop on everyone else's awesomeness because what we, still not all of us, call fun is crap cough*cough*GTAV*cough*cough. PS. I HATE GTA (and a whole lot of Western culture crap we have). So he really missed the part where the "boss" is standing around doing nothing, and wonders why his workers are running around aimlessly? Not reading the rest of it - this guy's analytical skills are not developed enough. I'd love to sit down with Mr.Hochschartner and shoot holes in his theories piece by piece... starting with how the story, themes and characters are all taken from Japanese culture and lore.
Dude's just trying to make a name for himself via controversy. His name tells you everything you need to know! How can you take somebody with the word SHART in the middle of their name seriously? Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahapassout Hold on, hold on, one more thing:
"Anthropomorphized cows"
Tell me this is a joke article. They are not MORPHED in any way, except speaking, so that the player can understand why they suddenly have a bottle full of milk.
And by the way, farmers do protect their cattle from predators, so while it isn't an agreed upon exchange, there is definitely mutual benefit. Wow. Good luck in the press, bud. Not only did OoT make me feel okay for looking down on women and hate people with a darker tan than me, but I also break pots and cut down plants that belong to others in search of money. It looks like you missed the part where the author called the game an amazing work of art. Did you even read the linked article? You are privileged when you don't have to worry about being judged on the basis of your culture or physical characteristics. In our society, not everyone is able to live such a life. Obviously, NintendoLife is not the place to discuss sociology. That being said, these examinations can have value if you take five seconds to think them through. No need to get so polemical over this. Obviously it didn't make you hate people. But it does reinforce harmful conceptions, no matter how subtly. GTA is an obvious offender, but Zelda? It's important to look at these sort of things to see how far harmful attitudes permeate our society, even our childhood. You don't have to stop playing OoT; the author is simply asking us to be aware. From looking at their front page it seems like a random tabloid site.
Not even going to waste any more of my time on that click-bait. Please don't take away my scapegoat. I need something to blame for this hatred burning inside me. I sort of agree with what he's saying. But not enough to make a big deal out of it. It's a game. The one that I have always had the biggest problem with is Zelda essentially being worthless in the franchise. In Wind Waker she plays a baddonkey pirate that distracts Ganon to help Link escape. And then when she turns into a princess, the King is like "Oh you stay here. Let the boys do the work." Excuse me? If she wasn't there to distract Ganon then Link would be dead.
Watch the profanity please — TBD
1. Yes, I did read that fodder of an article. I did see the end of the article where, after pooping on a very great game, Mr. Shartnose tossed a compliment at it.
2. Are you saying that to be privileged, I have to be a rich white man here in America? I would normally just say rich man but after seeing how President Obama, and other well to do black men, as well as women in general in America are treated, I see where your definition of "privileged" stands. If you're confused about what I said, feel free to reread my comment. Another helpful definition of a privileged mindset would be: not caring enough about harmful social presumptions because they don't effect you. Heres the problem with journalism at its finest people. If you look hard enough at anything and try to find any sort of undertones you will find it,no matter how absurd. Its like those pictures paparazzi take of a star looking bored at their movie, but if you actually see a running video of the same moment you find the star was simply in the middle of blinking, and the paparazzi made it out like the star was bored "You are privileged when you don't have to worry about being judged on the basis of your culture or physical characteristics." This is what you said. "Another helpful definition of a privileged mindset would be: not caring enough about harmful social presumptions because they don't effect you." Then this.
There is a big difference between not being judged by your culture or physical characteristics and not caring about social presumptions/stereotypes. I couldn't care less about what people think of me but that does not change the fact that people can judge me for being black.
I get how you can feel that you are right, but don't try to be condescending with me, and if YOU are confused by MY statements, then you are screwed because I can't dumb it down any further.Don't try to match wits with me, because I will bury you. Problems is such a strong word for what is simply a harmless fairy tale. If you look hard at enough at any form of entertainment looking to find anything wrong with it i guarantee you will find it. What a horrible way to go through life. I mean is this author right on what he has noticed in this game? Yes,i supose. Does it matter or affect your enjoyment of the game? Absolutely not! The relationship between the self-described “boss” of the carpenters and those he calls “my workers,” ... portrays the apprentices or journeymen as lazy and shiftless, and the boss as the only one willing to work. I always took the relationship to be a humorous take on how the older generation views the older generation. The boss never lifts a single finger to help while complaining about his crew's directionless efforts. It's a mockery of what the critic is saying it portrays. "The racial, ethnic and religious traits of the “good characters” and the “bad characters” within the game also demonstrate a certain xenophobia." ... All of the good characters, such as the Hylians and Kokiri, are white. In contrast, all of the bad characters, such as the thieving Gerudo and their king, Ganondorf, have brown skin." Great job of only examining a single game and the relationship between two races. While in OoT Ganon has "brown" skin, in later games he has pure black skin, like a glove. Since Hylians are elves, I've always viewed it as more of a Light Elf versus Dark Elf relationship. These are fictional characters that do not belong to any race–if blue men existed, would they be compared to the Zoras? Also, the Gerudo are NOT portrayed as being evil. They are a strong, proud, all female "brown" skinned race of warriors, whose leader rebels against Ganon by accepting Link. The second-in-command of the Gerudo, Nabooru is the essential SIXTH SAGE and wanted to stop Ganon's plots. Thus, she is one of the most important characters in the game. Gorons are portrayed as a friendly, loving, protective people in every Zelda game. They always help Link and are my favorite "race." They are "brown." Don't tell me that they don't count because they eat rocks or some cr*p; none of these "races" exist, so they are all equally applicable or not applicable. Most peoples in the Zelda games are portrayed favorably. It is inevitable that some are portrayed negatively because you need a bad guy. That is, unless everyone where the same race, at which point this article would be complaining that ALL of the characters are white/yellow/brown/blue/purple. Apparently, portraying any race in a game as having negative cultural traits when it resembles a real-life race is bigotry. I guess all the races in games should co-exist in a multicultural love-fest like they obviously exist today? Especially when they exist in a medieval-inspired time? Also, if "whites" are supreme, what about the "yellows" that worked on the game? "Just like in every other game in the series, Princess Zelda is incapacitated and in need of rescue from the central character, Link." In most of the games, Zelda plays a central role of some sort beyond "getting kidnapped." In Ocarina of Time, she immobilizes Ganon so that Link can finish him. She guides him as Sheik and is kidnapped once her disguise is gone not because she is no longer a "man," but BECAUSE HER DISGUISE IS GONE. In Skyward Sword, she's the mortal incarnation of a GODDESS. Oh, no. How horribly sexist that Link should be a mortal with a sword and slingshot while Zelda is a GOD that apologizes for "manipulating" Link into helping her. In Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass she's the leader of a band of pirates. In Spirit Tracks, she helps Link by controlling Phantoms. She's almost always kidnapped, but there are lots of females in Zelda games. Most of the sages, for example, are female. “normalize extremely toxic, patronizing, and paternalistic attitudes.” The solution, obviously, will be extremely toxic, patronizing and maternalistic attitudes. Right? We'll solve this by making the protagonist a "brown" female, and the enemies "white" males? Any honest look at OoT's story shows that the only truly evil "brown" skinned person is Ganon himself. The others are being manipulated. Any honest look sees that there are many, nice races in the game. Any honest look acknowledges the possibility that the worker "classes" are a commentary. Any honest look sees that the MAJORITY of important characters other than Link are actually FEMALE. I cannot say this is an honest analysis of the themes portrayed in Ocarina of Time. Sometimes I'm like "Yeah, I'll post a long, well-thought-out comment", and then I read the other comments and I decide there's enough of that.
I don't take this article seriously. Either the article is a joke, or the man's logic is. my favorite types of racist/sexist people are the ones that blame everything else for being racist. Not because the disguise is gone, but because she reveals she holds the Triforce of Wisdom. Ganondorf is not Bowser who just wants the pretty princess. He's after power. Also, I didn't notice the animal treatment section. "In the game, domestication is portrayed as a mutually beneficial, voluntary arrangement. The anthropomorphized cows of Hyrule speak to Link, literally saying, “Have some of my refreshing and nutritious milk!” Of course depicting a relationship as anything like symbiotic when one party kills and eats the other, as well as the latter’s children, would be laughable if it weren’t so appalling." All of the cows you can talk to in OoT are dairy cows. The only ones I know of that could've been eaten are in Jabu-Jabu's stomach. In later games it is suggested they could be used for meat. However, I don't think a dairy cow saying "WHEN I DIE MY FLESH SHALL BE CONSUMED BY APE MEN! HELP ME!" to Link in a Nintendo game that children will play is appropriate. It's natural to not want to think about it. Also, where is it suggested it is voluntary? Thank you for the correction. My main point was that he didn't grab her because now she was a woman, when she had been a "man." It's been awhile since I've played OoT. I can't believe this guy forgot to mention how this game makes fun of overweight people. The boss calls his relatively overweight workers "lazy" and forces them to run without ever giving them a break. Don't forget about the Zora King, he can't even stand up, but instead slowly scoots over. I regret playing Ocarina of Time. It's such a disgusting racist, sexist, and classist game that just typing the name of the game makes me want to vomit. Every copy of the game should be destroyed, every person who likes it should be imprisoned, and all Nintendo products should be banned in America because of just how vile this 15 year old game is! Excuse me while I play GTA 5 instead of this disgusting filth. Honestly, this is probably the most ridiculous thing I've heard in my life. If this guy is honest, I could imagine him petitioning the moving of "Deer Crossing" signs to less busy roads. The only way a game could even be fair to everyone in this guys mind is if you played as an androgynous, transparent blob of goo and every other character was an androgynous, transparent blob of goo. Where's a thumbs up button when you need it? I bet they are gonna complain that there needs to be a male protagonist in Metroid Prime and an actual human boss instead of a phazon infused spider creature >_> Hilarious. Trust me; I do have trouble eating meat knowing its origins. However, instead of complaining about a game having happy/willing dairy cows, maybe the author should be pushing for everyone to become a vegan? Complaining that a 15 year old game had dairy cows that enjoy Elves getting healed by their milk will not change anything. This guy doesn't seem to understand that it's hard to make an interesting story/character without it being analyzed as even remotely offensive. I'm not saying a good story/character has to be offensive, but some psychoanalyst (like this guy) could make it out to be offensive. I mean, look at all the people that say the Harry Potter series is anti-Christian (I'm still not sure what that's all about. ). The legend of zelda series hasnt made ganondorf out to be evil for the sake of evil. What little backstory we have of him paints a tragic figure. I do see the parallel between the real world struggles of middle eastern and western ideology but i find it to be more enlightening then offensive. As far as sexism goes they clearly overlooked the plethora of strong female characters represented in the game. And the arguement of animal abuse is laughable as the animals in the series DO have a symbiotic relationship with mankind. I don't remember any slaughterhouses in the series. So I guess kids playing duck duck goose is racist too :/ This is a silly article. (Jon's, not Damien's.) But in all fairness, he ends with this: "On this 15th anniversary of the game’s release, I encourage readers to dust off their Nintendo 64 and return to Hyrule. Hike up Death Mountain. Swim in Lake Hylia. Explore the Lost Woods. “Ocarina” is a fantastic piece of art we can enjoy while being aware that, like so much other art, it has a lot of problems." So in the end he's promoting the game as worthy and artful... exactly what I'm saying. No need for fans to be so dismissive. To this I say fair game. This guy has taken the time to deeply probe the game and encapsulate its errors and flaws in a piece of well planned academic writing. Even if he finds fault with some elements of the game, that's necessary as part of academic discourse. There is no single book or film without harsh criticism, no matter how acclaimed it might be, for example. So tl;dr to gamers, this kind of writing is exactly what we want! Don't bash it! ...it's a game. He should just see a shrink instead of writing stuff like that. I have a mental illness but therapy and prescription medication helped greatly. exactly!
"...it's a game." No, it's one of the best games ever made. Is it art? Than it deserves to be examined as such. : The problem with the writing is the fact that it doesn't offer valid reasons (Other than mentioning nostalgic bias...). Critical examination is great, but the article comes out as sort of pointless, especially with that remark at the end.
Most of the subjects I'm not sure why they are bothered with the "class". Why would you have a game set in a world with imperial rule, but have towns that have a capitalist democracy? It wouldn't make sense — at least not in this game. I'd also like to say, I believe (from the given quotes) the BOSS was more concerned with the laziness of the younger generation, workers or not...
The only reason it's racist is because they want it that way... It's light and dark. What if the Gerudos were green? What if they were pink? Since Ganon has been portrayed as dark, it may ruin continuity. Might as well be judging Star Wars of being racist. Ever see a classic western? Racist, sexist, classist....
The comment, from this guy, makes the author seem less redeeming:
Just popping out to mention, I think NintendoLife's coverage is missing two crucial paragraphs from the article: "Some readers may take criticism of “Ocarina” as dismissal of the game. But this isn’t the case. As Feminist Frequency blogger Anita Sarkeesian says, “Remember that it’s both possible and even necessary to simultaneously enjoy media while also being critical of its more problematic or pernicious aspects.” Because games’ technological capabilities have increased so rapidly since “Ocarina” was released, I suspect the title’s reputation is somewhat inflated due to nostalgia of critics of a certain age. But it’s a nostalgia I share. There is no game with which I have more fond memories. So criticism here should be interpreted as loyal opposition." This changes the tone of the article completely. It's not saying that the game is racist, sexist and should be lambasted at every opportunity. It just gives a potential lens for reading through the discourses of race, gender and class. It's to offer a new way of thinking about the game world because the writer himself acknowledges that the most common view of Ocarina is that it's the best game ever. Also, the tagline for the NL article becomes a whole lot funnier when one checks the Salon writer's profile and sees that he's written two articles - the other one is on Rockstar and GTA I remember when games were just fun and we didn't have all this crap on the internet trying to pick apart games for the heck of it, or stupid fanboy wars. Also no, he really doesn't have a leg to stand on. He's looking way to much into this game. I mean heck the 3 strongest beings in LOZ world are women. The 3 goddesses to be exact. ! Moronic article. Someone looking for a way to cry and complain. Take your political correctness out of here Haha! Didn't read the article, but I can already tell it's idiotic. Gannondorf aside, the comparison between the Gerudos and the people of Islam is something that really should be admired, rather than taken offense to. This is an entire race of women who were likely oppressed by their one and only male/king. It strongly reflects the real world conflicts in Islam today. Yay for getting cheap attention by poking at a popular game with the racist/sexist card! While he's at it why doesn't he examine the sexist themes in Halo or accuse Mario of being a white-supremist? This moron proves he doesn't even understand the material he's accusing. Let's take a look at some of those claims, shall we? Let's see... The game is racist because the Gerudo, who live in a desert, have darker skin than those who don't live in a desert. Let's ignore the blatantly-obvious reason for that for a moment. So, he says this is clearly racist because the Gerudo are the "bad guys." That's funny, because during the game you get help from one of them, end up becoming a member of their organization, oh, and the one that helped you earlier? Yeah, she becomes one of the freaking sages who at the end of the game entrap Ganon in the Golden Realm, an act without which he would have continued to reign as the evil king. Just because the villain happens to be a member of one of the in-game races does not inherently make that entire race "the bad guys." Okay, what's next? Oh right, sexism. How laughable. So let's see all the ways the female characters in the game directly refute this bizarre claim: 1. Before the story even begins, Link's mother sacrifices her own life getting him to safety in the Kokiri forest. Without her, he dies and there is no one to stop Ganon.
2. Saria provides Link with help in the form of his first ocarina, one of the tunes required to advance in the game, helpful tips throughout the game as needed, and she becomes a second of the sages who as already mentioned save the world at the end of the game.
3. Impa provides Link with another useful ocarina tune and gives him helpful advice to continue him on his quest.
4. Zelda provides Link with much necessary aid in procuring the sacred stones needed to access the Temple of Time, and also provides him with the ocarina later. After Ganon takes over, she then proceeds to directly aid Link in her alternate Sheik form and provides invaluable wisdom needed to defeat Ganondorf, as well as hooking Link up with several vital ocarina tunes. It is also her magic at the end of the game which allows Link to deliver the finishing blow to Ganon's beast form.
5. Malon teaches Link another tune for his ocarina that is very helpful in advancing the game, and introduces him to the horse without which he would not be able to progress. (By the way, the horse is also female.) To say that the women in Ocarina of Time just sit around and wait for rescue is ridiculous to anyone who's actually bothered to play through the story. One of the most iconic sequences in the game features Link sneaking through a fortress run exclusively by women in a quest to save male workers they captured. Did he conveniently forget that when writing this trash? Idiots and their opinions are a dime a dozen, and nobody with any brains is listening. This person should go back to the dark hole from which they crawled and never speak again. Heh...heh heh...ahahaha....HAHAAAAAA- Next. I enjoy digging deep into content and revealing underlying themes and possibly overanalyzing. Having these discussions is healthy as others have said. However in this case, Ocarina of Time, has probably been underanalyzed and generalized at every turn. The main argument he tries to make is Zelda being portrayed as a useless damsel in distress and Ganon being a dark skinned villian. Zelda was far from a "useless". Sheik is more capable then Link in many ways. When it is revealed to be Zelda, it actually flies in the face of sexism. Don't under estimate women. She's kidnapped because of her connection with Triforce, not because she is a women. And as for dark skinned Ganon, black vs white, light vs dark, it is sybolism at the most. It visually shows an oppostion. It is used to compare Link and Ganom. Make them appear as opposites. It doesn't imply everyone with dark skin is in anyway evil. The problem is generalization. For example, if Zelda was just a damsel in distress, that doesn't mean all women are weak. Just the character. Eh, just my two cents. HAHAHA what a moron!
also, "The anthropomorphized cows of Hyrule"....... those don't exist, unless he thought that Talon was a cow lol and i thought my life was boring but seems like it can get worse but sure least talk about a game that came out years ago why not make game theories they are more interesting while your at it All I have to say is being PC is garbage. Everyone takes everything to seriously. I work with a black, an asian, massively obese, extremely old, hawaiin, and a lesbian in my shop, and I'm the OCD dude with a gambling problem. All we do all day is make fun of eachother, and we have a blast. Best workplace environment I've ever worked. Everything in life can be construed to be anti-something. The fact we can't laugh at our quirks and fitting a stereotype is what makes this world untolerable for the most part. The more you go looking for this kind of stuff, the less you can fully enjoy life. Wait a minute, I've already read this word-for-word but whoever posted it said that Anita Sarkeesian wrote this. So guess either one of these journalists are plagiarizing... He's stretching. Many of the complaints are just silly and read far too much into tiny details. But there are also some areas where Ocarina of Time (and other Zelda games) could/should improve. The damsel in distress trope is a crutch at best. There are some racist overtones (chanting in the volcano that had to be changed, Gerudo issues) that simply don't need to be there. Turning a blind eye to the problems might make the games more enjoyable... but acknowledging there are problems and pushing for change in the industry is probably a better option for everyone. Use a critical eye to think about the media you are exposed to - what it says, why it was produced, and how it affects your views and actions. But sometimes that also means understanding when a game is just a game, and not reading more into than you need to. What an EFFING WASTE OF ENERGY. The author obviously had nothing to write about that day. Maybe we should ask Nolan Bushnell what he thinks..?

You pretty much hit every nail in the head I was about to, point for point. Its funny how context is usually ignored in these kind of "analyses", to quote Anita as this guy has done "context is irrelevant". It doesn't matter how or why it happened, just that it has. These are real world issues but you just make a mockery out of them by trying to paste these sorts of labels on everything. Going around shouting about every little thing that bugs you will just cause your voice to fall on deaf ears, a boy who cried wolf story if you will. Not to get all philosophical but seeing the world that way is just as bad as being ignorant. Your seeing labels that shouldn't necessarily exist. Theres a fine line between critical thinking and connecting dots that aren't there. Lots of butthurt here, wow. The reaction has been quite hilarious. Political correctness offends me. I don't think any single movement over the past 20 years has been as great a detriment to freedom of speech and expression in our society. Just a few examples: schools in Michigan are banning games of tag. One in Maryland recently suspended a kid for wielding a toy pistol AT HIS OWN HOME. Florida and Connecticut schoolteachers have been caught telling elementary school students it's "okay to give up some freedoms to be safer". We have people who are adamant about tearing down statues of Confederate veterans and removing Confederate battle flags yet see no problem with stomping on/burning the US flag in a rap video. A Barney Fife neighborhood watchman shoots a kid and the media whips up a frenzy of racial outrage and hatred, while a guy shoots dozens of fellow soldiers at Fort Hood, killing a dozen, while shouting "Allahu Ackbar"...and it's classified as a "workplace incident". Political correctness is about CREATING division and anger through gross double standards. It polices thoughts, creates a culture of litigation and witch hunts, and brings out nutjobs like the person who did that write-up on Ocarina of Time to stir up trouble where none is justified. It's nothing but bad news and the American people should have enough sense to send it and its promoters packing. Lol nice one! xD Oh yeah, very racist... One guy + two others of a "race" are evil. This means automaticly, that the other people of this "race" are evil, too? By the way: Ganondorf is green, so I don't think, that he his a real gerudo. Is he a mudblood or the halfblood prince? Don't forget about he other races in the game like zora and gorons. The fact that you are helping them in a crisis for their tribes is racist too, I guess. Because only the white man/kid can help them. What game is next? Super Mario? Look at the goombas skin tone and compare it with marios... You can really put things into other things that aren't there. Reminds me on a southpark episode. "Must kill all posers!" It's just a a drop in the ocean, but I'm with everyone in saying that the author of this article is a complete idiot and has no clue whatsoever at what's going on. The lazy workers are a stereotype, just like the tyrannic boss, and they go together. WHile he's at it, he could attack Disney because Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck have the exact same relationship. The Gerudo are brown skinned because they live in the freaking desert! It would be strange for them to be white. And Ganondorf is green... As it's been pointed out, the Gerudo couldn't be more different from current Arab people, because they are a tribe of warrior women dressing... lightly. And the crescent shape is just on so many flags of Northern African countries... How about Zelda? Well... SHE IS A FREAKING PRINCESS! She's being captured because that's what princesses do. Why don't you attack Peach then? And the "princess" in Save Mii? And Razpunzel? And every single princess princess in CHILDREN'S TALES? At least Zelda has the guts to make a stand as Sheik. She also helps you escape from the castle. And to finish Ganon. Did you ever play the game??? And the cows... screw you. Cows are here to give milk and be eaten, get over it. Otherwise they'd be wild animals, not farm animals. Go back to the Carebear world if you can't handle the simplest of reality. (I imagine the author of this BS pestering waiters at the restaurant: "Do you know what this is? This is meat! Yes, I ordered meat, but I'm very unhappy to eat it and I'm going to be a donkey about it too!") The problem with such analyses is that they tell you more about their author than about the thing s/he analysed. They are like Rorschach tests: They reveal what someone wants to interpret into things, not about what is necessarily really there.
A right-wing author could easily cherry-pick and oversimplify their way into decrying the game as a piece of leftist propaganda. Starting with Link's notorious disregard for other people's property to the caricature of an evil, abusive landowner that we find on Lon-Lon Ranch, the BOSS who just shouts and bullies his workers around instead of providing them with proper security when attempting to build in a dangerous environment. And near the end Link actually joins a group of female robbers.
Then he would go on to denounce the game's leftist "man-hating" stance, clearly visible through the fact that the only male to be born into a noble, all-female warrior race turns into an evil, powerhungry maniac. Similarly, most of the boys in the Kokiri forest are either useless buffoons or bullies who try to hinder you, while help naturally comes mostly from female NPCs. Also the only visible part of Hyrule's ruling class is a woman. So is her bodyguard. And the majority of sages are female. Even the cool ninja turns out to be a woman.
And so on.
Personally, I find it hard to consider a game "racist" where one of the key plot elements is the joining of forces by representatives from all Hyrulean races (including the "evil" Gerudo) to weaken the main antagonist.
As for sexist, I must say that a whole race of proud warrior women who are actually among the most able melee fighters in the game hardly promotes a "damsel in distress" message. And as for Zelda: even when she's dressed as a male, she's still a woman underneath. So everything she did she still did as a woman.(Besides, I never thought she disguised herself as a man. Sheikh looked like a ninja with no discernible sex. During my first play-through I briefly thought it was actually Impa in disguise.)
And yes, my interpretation also reveals more about me than about the game itself, and what I want to see in it. But at least I acknowledge that. I think that only a silly person can think that zelda is sexist racist and classist Heil Link! **Raises up arm*** Jon Hochschartner go dome you're hrunk. Ocarina of Time is prejudiced against ginger haired maniacs. What the heck did I just read? That is just... What? Most of the stuff he mentioned is most likely just coincidence anyway. A lot like the subliminal message in Super Mario Galaxy having stars only on U, R, M, R, G, A and Y. And I'm guessing Mario is sexist as well along with every movie, TV and game featuring damsel in distress situations being saved by a male. Loo. Ser. The problem with this is that Ganondorf chose to abduct Zelda and ignore Link, when there's no reason he couldn't have abducted both. Why did he leave Link alone? He was right there, in the same place as Zelda, and both were revealed to possess parts of the Triforce at the same time. It's a huge plot hole in my opinion. The classist stuff is ridiculous, I interperet the boss of the carpenters speech at a joke at the technological limitations. They are all on repeating patterns and unlike Majoras Mask time doesn't really progress in that game (except for the 7 year divide).
Also the Gerudu stuff is unfair, Ganondorf is the only one with any malicious intent the others act against you with good justification and become allies later on.
The damsel stuff is unfortunate but I would say it is more shackling itself to tradition rather than patronising women. I do think they should move away from this trope as it is somewhat demeaning and unimaginative. I'm not even going to touch upon the animal... This is just another of them websites for American Democratic Party and their puppet minorities (I am minority by the way) to whine. People need to stop being over sensitive and try to find issues with everything. People always trying to find an excuse for the crappy life they choose to live. Are you serious? I really get tired of overly sensitive people. Get over yourselves, seriously. Did the people who came up with this smoke crack since birth or what? Saw one comment at the top that said this guy was reading "deep" into it. And yes, it's simply ridiculous. "News Site Desperate for Hits, Makes Flippant Accusations Concerning Serious Issues." pretty funny read. I'm someone who takes that stuff really seriously too, but this is pretty over the top. So I guess this guy just landed on planet earth last week or so and hasn't picked up any of the ads, magazines, tv, movies, packaging, music... maybe he landed and then woke up from a nap with the game in his hand. I do remember thinking the most human depiction of Ganon here and the desert clan being oddly arabic looking with some overtones that say Islam part but it's not very specific about anything to be that harmful to anyone. You know what? Gamers are fickle. People were freaking out when Metroid Other M was released, calling it "sexist, misogynistic" because it portrayed Samus as weak and subservient to men. They also said she was a battered woman in an abusive relationship with Adam M, citing poorly done gameplay mechanics (you can only use items once Adam approves authorization) and falsely interpreted interactions. Gamers called out all these social injustices and quickly used them for grounds of why they disliked the game. I made the point that you can literally dissect and critique any piece of media and find social injustices. The author makes valid points, but since Ocarina of Time is well liked, they are supposedly "wrong" with their assessment of Ocarina of Time. What makes Other M more wrong that Ocarina of Time other than not being as good? All of you need to grow up. I thought about it a little more: Hylians arent even "human". They are some sort of elve people, hence the pointy ears. And its rather funny that the positive examples about the races in the Zelda universe fall under the carpet here: Why isnt it mentioned that the Hylians have absolutely no problem with their goron and zora neighbors and that they live happily side by side. Or that Impa, Zeldas maid is a shiekah, another ethnical tribe working together with the hylian royal family. Or the skulltula curse victims, living in kakariko without beeing bothered. They basicly represent disabled people. And even whichcraft, alchemy and occultists living among commoners without problems, something, that was hunted in killed in real life a couple hundret years ago. What about the circle of sages, consisting of every tribe that is resident in hyrule, working together to keep the land peaceful.
The Zelda universe gives so much positive examples agains sexism (female warriors, sages etc) and racism (different kinds of people, classes, races living and working happily together) and nobody ever takes notice.
Also, calling hylians "the good people" is also way wrong. Just look at the Gorons or the Zora. Both tribes are very noble and friendly. And then you have a corrupt, hylian farmer, holding you hostage for winning a horce race, or the lazy workers, the insane Windmill guy etc. A glance of the website and I can see Salon panders to liberals. Democrats are saints, Republicans are demons, personal responsibility shouldn't be necessary, everything everywhere should be politically correct, keep raising taxes, government should keep spending more money, debt doesn't matter, etc, etc. And before someone accuses me of it, I'm not a Republican or a conservative. Some people seem to have the idea that if you're not a Democrat and liberal, the only option left is to be a Republican and conservative or vise versa. This guy's attacking zelda like peta attacked pokemon - just as pointless and idiotic. It's a game, it ain't real. & LoZ: OoT spoilers the Gerudo turn out good after breaking into their hideout, having split away from Ganondorf. end LoZ: OoT spoilers Also you don't save Zelda in Link's Awakening iirc & probs other Zelda games I haven't played too. Hey wasn't she not needed to be saved in Skyward Sword too? I really don't remember, maybe she was. In any case it really doesn't matter. Games are interactive entertainment. The player character is the player, who will either be a boy or girl. For example I don't suddenly feel less in control of the main character in the Metroid games just because Samus is a woman. The person's article is amazingly dumb, attacking a 15 year old game on fake issues the game doesn't have instead of at least trying to be relevant to current game trends & attacking GTA Oh well. It's interesting to note than when they redid that trailer for OoT3D they changed the line cited as being problematic.
Ganon is Ganondorf's beast form >_<
This is just stoopid. That's not true. While his beast form is always called Ganon (to my knowledge), he is also referred to as Ganon many times in his human form as well. There are many theories as to the "correct" way, but the only one that is without conflicting evidence is that the two names are interchangeable. Naw. I'll be stubborn. Ganon is a pig.
:3 How dare you call The Prince of Darkness fat! I didn't >_< I really wish you guys hadn't posted this. It just brings more attention to a stupid article that was probably written mostly for attention. I will say this though: No matter how you believe the characters were portrayed, they are not a representation of an entire people (race, gender, religion, etc.). If a movie has a lazy black guy, that doesn't mean that all black people are lazy. It just means that one fictional person, who is also black, is lazy. If the viewer imagines that there is a relation, then it's just their hangup. More than anything, it's people's obsession with searching for stereotypes that make them continue to exist. The guy who wrote that article is an idiot. While some traits are similar to different cultures, there's no direct correlation with any of them in the "Zelda" series, that I'm aware of. Also, one of the so-called "bad guys" (Nabooru) turns out to be the Sage of Spirit, helping Link defeat Ganondorf. Darunia also has brown skin, and remains an aide and "sworn brother" to Link through the whole game...funny how the author forgot about that. The whole sexism bit is crap, too. Like it or not, most women are physically smaller and weaker than most men. We were designed to be their protectors, not abusers. Radical feminists always link (or it it Link?) dominance with oppression. =( Guys, it's clear what needs to happen in light of these current events. In the next Zelda game, to make up for the blatant sexism, racism, class discrimination, and animal rights issues, a few things must occur:
1. All characters must have an identical mulatto skin tone, not too white, not too black.
2. Link must be a hermaphrodite... Actually, all characters must be hermaphrodites.
3. Hyrule must be completely communist. Get rid of all of the Hyrulian symbols, replace them with the sickle and hammer. All characters must make note of "How glorious it is to work in fields of Mother Hyrule". There is no more royalty, and everyone equally contributes to great working class, and reads only Marx.
4. There must be no animals at all to exploit. In fact, there aren't any creatures at all in the game other than humans. Link may only fight members of the KKK, misogynists, and capitalists.
Yes, this is the only way to remedy the wrong that Ocarina of Time has caused. ... But seriously folks, this guy's antics are laughable at best, I can't fathom how one could write something this unintelligent and poorly thought out - it's one of the dumbest things I've ever read, and I've read some PRETTY STUPID things in my time on the grand internets. You actually believe this stuff as real? I do hope you're joking. Zelda disguising herself as a man is absolutely not sexist at all. If she could only get away with hiding as a warrior male then why the hell is Impa a warrior female who is depicted as being strong and protective of Zelda? Is that sexist too somehow? The fact that she's being protected by another woman!? Also, there's nothing in this game that even suggest that anyone eats cows, so that is bullocks too. This smart donkey who wrote that asinine article is looking at the game from a total outside "real world" perspective, and especially a political perspective. I can't believe you're calling us priviledged, that right there shows how you obviously don't view everyone as equal people. It's not that I'm getting defensive that my precious Zelda could have things like this, no, it's that I'm totally flabergasted that this guy would actually come up with such nonsense! I'm normally one to debate in fairness, but this is just WAY out there. I cannot believe that you seriously think of his viewpoints as real. Have you played this game? Have you done any research into the development process?
Watch the profanity and insults please — TBD Honestly, I think it's important to be aware of unintentional offenses. Can you live your life in fear that you will offend someone? No. Should you do your best to help rather than hurt? Of course. If you'd like to look up the error of a privileged mindset, I'd encourage you to do so. As I've said previously, NintendoLife is clearly not the forum to discuss social theory. What you call "being defensive" is people pointing out that this article is full of flaws. I think you should read my previous post.
Yep, thats because it goes against their purpose. The game is the way they say it is because thats how they choose to see it, you can put a negative spin on just about anything if given enough thought. Anybody who isn't familar with it would be inclined to take your word for it, for better or worst. The person sounds like they know what they're talking about, therefore it must be true, right? Thats why you get people being "defensive" or "immature" when these kind of articles pop-up, they know its misleading. These aren't just little rumors either, they're things that could greatly influence a person's view of the subject. I have no problem with people pointing out flaws. That's give and take, conversation, discourse. What I call "being defensive" is people not even giving these ideas a chance. A quick look through the above 200+ posts will show a completely dismissive attitude by most. Is the Salon article flawed? Of course, what isn't (yes, that includes Zelda). In your previous post, you say "More than anything, it's people's obsession with searching for stereotypes that make them continue to exist." I disagree. I say that it's a lack of understanding diverse viewpoints that continues stereotypes. Angry, dismissive attitudes towards opinions other than our own prolong this lack of understanding and strengthen stereotypes. Ignorance may be bliss, but it is certainly not healing or helpful. Education is the answer. I expect this post to be dismissed at least as much as those I've made above. As I've said before, NintendoLife is not a healthy environment for this type of discussion. Take what I say with a grain of salt, but at least try to understand where I am coming from. Thank you for this exchange. You are welcomed to have the last word; I am finished with this comment thread. Well, you could say that the Zelda series is also discriminating shop-owners (the very unfriendly bomb-shop owner from Windwaker as a good example)!
Lol, I think it's a bunch of nonsense! Oot is awesome, as are most of the Zelda games! Articles like this are one of the biggest reasons that stereotypes are even known. People are dismissive because the premise of the statements are flawed. Nothing holds up without a solid premise. I think it's pretty clear that you missed my point about characters representing a group of people. For example, even if Ganondorf had been black (he's green, despite what this article says), it shouldn't matter. If a stereotype didn't exist, the author never would have made the connection. He only saw an (invalid) connection because of the way he views the world. People are upset because by implying that the game is racist (among other things), he is himself being racist. This stuff doesn't occur to most people, and you don't find all of these (invalid) points unless you want to see them. So again, the world would be much better off without articles like this. Ultimately, this world would be much better off without people who constantly play the victim card, when its painfully obvious no harmful intent ever existed. Can you imagine what would have been said if the kokiri were black?
When people dig this deep it just makes them look stupid.
I would think the energy spent on this article could have been better put to use elsewhere. starts playing Ocarina of time. wow this is great.
10 minutes later thinks Gosh I'm gonna go out, and find green people who live in the desert to kill. (I get annoyed when people over analize games. Then say things like this. might as well blame todays society based off of racists, and sexists calling normal peope racist, and sexist on the first game I ever played.)
Now if you'll excuse I'm gonna see if chickens really can glide when you jump off a cliff holding one over your head. This guy must hate every book he reads, every movie he watches and every game he plays. He just nitpicks everything "wrong" with Ocarina of Time You can't go wrong with Zelda it's not like Gannondorf is innocent just look what he did to great fish isle in Wind Waker you are clearly stopping a bad guy. I'm just glad my mom didn't read articles like this when I was a kid, or I wouldn't be posting on this site today. What gets me about this article is the Zelda part. How he piggy backs off of that hack Anita. Was it Sheik who opened the bars, was it Sheik who paralyzed Ganondorf or called on the sages? I'm sure I would've had a good laugh until that part. News Indie Parkour Title Hover Revolt of Gamers Slated for Wii U

News: Indie Parkour Title Hover: Revolt of Gamers Slated for Wii U Nintendo Life

Jet Set Radio x Mirror's Edge? by Share: French indie studio Fusty Game, creator of The Secret of Space Octopuses and Super Commodore Holy Tank Soccer Deluxe (it has a way with titles), that its new game Hover: Revolt of Gamers will be coming to Wii U this year, in addition to PC, Mac, Linux, PS4, and Xbox One. Hover is a futuristic racing game in the colourful vein of , but it uses the first-person approach of parkour classic Mirror's Edge. Check out the trailer for the alpha version here, running on the Unity engine: on From Hover's official : Currently in development since November 2013 and based on new technologies like the "Oculus Rift", it takes place in a 3D futuristic open world. The new Mayor of Hover-City is prohibiting video games and all sorts of entertainment. Anyone catched in such a act would be send to hard labour. You play the "Gamers". They created the Resistance to help citizen to get back their consoles, create a diversion among the Cops while others are hacking the Mayor propaganda . In front of Non Playing Characters and other players in multiplayer you have to show your skills (speed race, triks, agility, speed hacking, diversions...). Other Gamers will join you during the adventure. Try to become the leader of the Resistance! Sounds like a cyberpunk dystopian fun time. Even better, the electronica-infused soundtrack is being produced by Hideki Naganuma, the composer behind Jet Set Radio. Parkour hasn't been explored nearly enough in gaming since Mirror's Edge pioneered it six years ago, and Hover: Revolt of Gamers will focus purely on the racing, without the unnecessary combat mechanics that bog down many titles in the genre. Hover is set to hit digital store shelves in late 2014. [source , via ] Share: Comments ) I'm sold on concept alone for now, only way I won't get it is if it ends up being terrible Sounds very promising. And it seems that you also have a third person view, judging from some parts on that video. This looks cool. Definitely interested. This looks pretty interesting. Looks very interesting and nice to see it's planned for this year as well I saw the video last week and loved it, but I had no idea it only had 5 months of development time so far! Definitely one I'll be watching. Jet Set Radio I see?
Looks like a lot of fun. This begs for some great, simple online integration that's not parkour. that's freerunning. i hate it when people can't differentiate between the two. the game has nowhere near the style like jet set radio Mirror's Edge didn't really "pioneer" parkour in games. Especially with Assassin's Creed and Prince of Persia being around long before (and its doubtful they were the first). That said, the game itself looks like a lot of fun. I really like the look of this game, I hope it will have missions otherwise I wouldn't buy it unless it is cheap. Looks really fun! I'll keep my eye out for it. They are. Its just to show things off. since you hate our ignorance of freerunning and parkour, do the public service of explaining the difference. Educate us, because besides watching parkour bails on YouTube, and knowing that Luigi is the master of the sport, I'm pretty much one of the ignoramuses who think they're the same thing.
This game looks really dang rad, for the record. Agreed, I don't know why people think Mirror's Edge invented the genre when Prince of Persia and Tomb Raider have been around for ages, and then there is Assasin's Creed and the Batman Arkham series as well. well basicly the difference is that with parkour you do not do any tricks or unnessecary moves. you go from point A to point B in the most efficient and fastest way possible. the entire philosophy is to get to know your body and its limits. also you feel a connection between you and your surroundings. you look at nature and urband areas in different ways. freerunning is looking cool with flips and tricks. it's for posers Sold as well. It looks compelling. one last question: Do freerunners wear heelys? If there's third-person camera then groovy; first-person platforming doesn't seem like fun to me! Looks like fun. With a name like HOVER I thought they were going to be on hover boards......but I'll definitely like to see how it plays out. Saw this advertised on pc last week, now i'm even more excited its coming to the U! I think Ninty should try and get Overgrowth up and on the eshop its a totally mental fighting game, where woodland creatures use medieval weaponry in free for all and team combat. It features instant death and some really funny rag doll physics where throwing spears into rabbits becomes disturbingly hilarious. That looks like a lot of fun! Looks like fun, but as pointed out, the footage shown has almost nothing to do with parkour.
But... I just don't know why. For some reason I don't like french art style for the most part. I've seen a lot of stuff with similar visual styles, and something just puts me off... Yeah. Let's do this, Fusty! Not usually into the games like Skate or Tony Hawy: Pro Skater, but this looks really cool! First-person perspective doesn't make me exactly happy, but this looks fun. Happy it's coming to Wii U. This particular city looks like Haven City from Jak 2/3. The Shadows and Lighting need improvements but I'm hoping to download this asap on the first day I get a Wii U. Hate the story, hate the art-style, hate the characters, hate everything it stands for but DANG, it looks fun! Looks pretty great. I'm definitely considering this - I just hope that there is a two player mode, which is something that every racing game needs. lol a Dreamcast-esque title on Wii U. How fitting. That's good to know. I always thought parkour was the one with all the flipping. Thanks for telling the difference! I'm interested for sure. Seems quite a bit out of my style, but I think I'll get it if it has a big story. I thought it was slated for 3DS, oopsie... Sexy. OMG looks like jet grind radio but baddonkey er... lol must buy this day one if it has online modes too that would be amazing !
Please watch the profanity — TBD This will be joining my game libary wether it wants or not at day one! ^^ I love the artstyle, and the constant motion. As long as the missions are compelling, this should be a great game. woop woop woop, this looks so good, great music too. no just normal sport running shoes I'm really liking the variety we're seeing come to Wii U... Hopefully this turns out better than some of those other Parkour-infused games. The is on my radar for now, looks totally kool and a nice change from all the other genres thats been getting released. , it's coming to PS4, too. Is that fitting? spoken like a true traceur =) you train? Cool!!! Well, it certainly has my attention, but IDK if this is my kind of game. Colorful, stylistic world, old school Tony Hawk and 1080 style tricks and scoring? I'm liking what I see! this is brillinat! a must have for me! well i havent trained for over a year. last year i was busy skateboarding
but i will try to train more this year. first i have to get some stamina again though same here I LOVE JET SET RADIO sad i missed JSRF though >.< That looks so awesome! It reminds me that i really need to play Jet Set Radio HD. Is that game any good? You had me at Jet Set Radio. Day one buy, as long as it's half decent. I just hope the camera works by moving your body with the gamepad in front of you, judging by the smoothness of the camera, I think this is the case. The Oculus Rift support for PC is also alluring. Will def keep this game under my radar, it looks like it could be a rare eShop purchase from me. News Insanity s Blade Gets Audiovisual and Gameplay Overhaul

News: Insanity's Blade Gets Audiovisual and Gameplay Overhaul Nintendo Life

A fresh coat of paint on the entire hack-and-slash game by Share: Canadian studio Causal Bit Games has totally revamped the art assets, music, game mechanics, and level design of its upcoming hack-and-slash Wii U eShop title, . In a on the company's website, lead developer Chris Obritsch writes: With the addition of the second player, we’ve decided that the old Nintendo styled stages were no longer going to work. We’ve made them all more arcade or SNES like in order to accommodate both players on screen, no chance of getting stuck behind a million walls! With the rebuilding of the stages came a ton of all new graphics and effects. Stage one, as you will see in the video below, has had many additions made to it aside of the new level layout. Stages like the plagued city and the graveyard which were originally wall jump heavy, have now been stretched out with minimal wall climbing parts and way more action. Wall climbing is easier with single player and causes a lot of issues between players falling and jumping when near the bottom or top of screen. Also, the heroes have been updated with a grab button. You can now toss zombies freely through the air as well as the addition moves that came with grabbing certain zombies like using an arm as a weapon, tearing a zombie in half over your head or mashing it’s neither regions with your boots. Full sound and proper music has also been added in game now. Also – you’ll notice in the video we’ve added widescreen support! Along with the blog update came a new gameplay video: on Causal Bit hasn't announced a release date for Insanity's Blade, but in the meantime you can check out with the developer. Will you be picking this one up once it's unleashed upon the eShop? [source , via ] Share: Comments ) yes, yes they did re haul the game, basically 3 times now, this goes to show how serious these guys are. hell yes ill be getting this game. heres hoping the other 2 games in the series prosper.
"mashing it’s neither regions with your boots."
i do that everyday, so doing this in a game is like clockwork to me. I really like the original graphics. Hopefully it will be single-player only unlockable. How come NL hasn't posted an article about this "Smash Bros. 6" developed by Namco and Nintendo an coming out IN 2015!?!? Please Nintendo! Don't delay it!!! Great move. This games looking better each time I see it. Can't wait to get it. See now the big publishers could learn something from this small indie...revise your games BEFORE you release them, cough EA cough Blizzard You realize we are currently on 4 right? That post was by a consultant at Namco Bandai and implied the sequel would be here by the end of next year which would mean they are working on 4,5(3DS version) and 6 at the same time. I expect it was a mistake on several levels, In any case wait until the direct tonight for solid info and not rumours. The music sucks. The graphics are really cool, though. It still doesn't look like the gameplay is very fun... Heh, I like how the original level music fitted the theme of this game. The new one doesen't. I like the overhauled graphics though. I love everything I see. Dem green eyes. this is the shiz, day one buy This and Volgarr on either WiiU or 3DS would be A-mazing. Well, a news junkie definitely wouldn't be asking this question. For him (or her) another news gathering tool is another for the quiver. calls itself a 'next generation news aggregation and personalization service'. It is basically tailored for the mobile web. In fact, it has apps which cover the iPhone, iPad, Windoes Phone 7, Playbook, Android, and the web. I will be focusing on the web version. Maybe, you readers can chip in with your comments for any of the aforementioned mobile platforms. Maybe like me you too wonder how do all these survive and flourish in the crowd of news apps. It all boils down to the aggregation mechanism and how does it rank news where every second one is 'breaking news'. Of course, looks matter too. That's where we start.
The Look Speaks…
No pretty newscaster, but a visually appealing design is what strikes you about News360. It however does not take anything away from the function as a scroll down tells you all that's happening around the world. You don't have to squint to read the massive flood of headlines from the original news sources. The lineup of Top News is where your eyes fall first. Next, you can take a glance on the left and filter through the news by clicking on the categories. If you like to get different views on a news item, you can click on the source (like, Associated Press) and get a tabbed display with all major networks covering the news. The image slideshow on top enhances your reading experience. A Read Original link takes you to the source page.
The Brains Behind The Looks…
Without going into the gobbledegook of semantic analysis and natural language processing, let's just say News360 tailors the news for you. The news gathering engine goes real-time through 700,000+ different companies, people, brands and locations, and sieves the news into clusters. If you connect your social profiles (Facebook, Twitter, Google Reader, and even Evernote), then News360 analyses them, and personalizes the news according to your tastes. You can skip that and do a manual customization yourself.
Go On A News Binge…
The main goal of News360 is to give you different angles to news from different sources. You can also use the search bar to pick up any available sources on a specific topic. For instance, you can search for your city and pick out sources which address city specific issues. News360 searches by keyword or picks up the news feed depending on your interest. News360 lets you sync your personal news preferences across all your devices. It also makes it easy to share interesting news topics with friends. News360 is your own personal news portal. It does not offer the selectivity of a feed reader, but it does a capable job of grabbing relevant news for you in real time from multiple sources and also personalizing it for you using your social profiles. News RSS Ticker An Elegant News Ticker For Windows & Linux
MUO

News RSS Ticker An Elegant News Ticker For Windows & Linux
<firstimage="https://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/newsrss-icon.png"> Stay up to date without turning on the television. If all you look at when watching cable news is the ticker at the bottom of the screen, RSS Ticker is for you. This Linux and Windows application takes any RSS feed and gives you an attractive free news ticker on your screen, showing you the headlines you care about. By default it shows you BBC headlines, but the application can make use of any RSS feed on Planet Earth. Staying up-to-the-minute isn't important for everyone, but if it is for you I highly recommend this app for the job. Last year we highlighted . Some were specific to a certain news outlet, some were complex, but none combined the customizable simplicity of News RSS Ticker. This application allows you to see the headlines from any news organization in real time, on your terms.
Using News RSS Ticker
Launch this nifty app and you'll see your news ticker: By default the news is coming from the BBC, which isn't an altogether bad source to start with. International news is always a good thing. If you're anything like me, you'll be annoyed by the speed of this ticker by default. Don't panic; you can change this. Click the question mark to the left of the ticker; this will pull up the menu. From here you can find the option to slow down the ticker: As you can see, you can also restart the feed. This is good if you miss a particular story. Click a headline and your default browser will open, giving you access to the full story. This is nice if a particular headline grabs your attention. Want to open another RSS feed? You'll find the option to do so in the menu. This is a great way to keep up with the latest news from a particular organization. It's also worth noting that you can add text files to this ticker. If you're looking for a hilarious distraction, I recommend downloading , a hilarious satirical dictionary by author Ambrose Bierce. Although you could easily imagine your own uses for this functionality.
Customize
You can customize most aspects of this RSS Ticker. You can, for example, change the colors and the default RSS feed. You can also set the positioning and more: Explore the settings to get a feel for what's possible, but you can essentially make the application look however you want.
Download The Application
Windows and Linux users should head on over to NewsRSSreader.com to download this application. Linux users will find Ubuntu/Debian packages by default, with other options lower down on the download page. Windows users will find the usual installation package, complete with multiple "Next" buttons.
Conclusion
These kinds of free news ticker apps can be distracting, but can also be useful from time to time. Do you have a favorite use for applications like this? Share it below. Also feel free to recommend alternative applications for keeping up with the news.

Newser & Nokia Bring The Perfect News App To Your Windows Phone 7
MUO

Newser & Nokia Bring The Perfect News App To Your Windows Phone 7
Paper news is in decline, and not without reason. With the plethora of electronic devices available to, and in possession of, the consumer, it is easier than ever to keep up-to-date with the latest developments in the world. Smartphones and tablets, the digital papers of today, perhaps lend themselves better to news reading on the go than any other digital platform. Paper news is in decline, and not without reason. With the plethora of electronic devices available to, and in possession of, the consumer, it is easier than ever to keep up-to-date with the latest developments in the world. Smartphones and tablets, the digital papers of today, perhaps lend themselves better to news reading on the go than any other digital platform, but reading the entire paper on your smartphone can be cumbersome to say the least. That's where news aggregators come in - news applications and websites that gather, and often curate, the most important tidbits of news growing in the ether. One of the best of these websites is Newser, and it's recently made its appearance on your Windows Phone 7 as well.

Newser (that is, the the ) has long been one of the most efficient ways to keep up with what's happening in the world, with its editors condensing and curating the most important bits of news. Partnering with Nokia, Newser is now making its appearance on Windows Phone 7. Don't worry, even if you don't have a Nokia phone, you can still download and enjoy the Newser application. Every day, the Newser editors push out 60 stories. These stories are then condensed and rewritten to fit into two paragraphs. If you want to read the full source article, and all the accompanying mumbo-jumbo, you can visit the news source at the bottom of the article (as shown in the screenshot), but in general the Newser article will tell you everything you need to know.
Latest Popular &amp Breaking
Newser lets you browse its news articles conventionally through three different fronts; latest, popular and breaking. Latest, as the name implies, shows you the last stories pushed to Newser. More importantly, Newser keeps track of what stories were published since your last visit. Popular is broken up in a number of categories, like World, US, Science and Health. You can also click through to 'all popular stories', to view hot articles regardless of their creed. Breaking keeps you on top of what's transpiring right now, showing 'new news', or so to speak.
Superlatives
The above three ways let you browse the news in a conventional way. However, one of the most interesting features of Newser are the Superlatives, which lets you browse articles based on what they meant to other readers. When you're reading an article, swipe left to add comments, or vote on the article. This lets you voice 'your take' on the article, toggling tags like 'hilarious', 'intriguing', 'depressing', and 'brilliant'. The use of this? Instead of browsing the news by category, you can also browse the news by superlative. Here you can see the current divide of the articles, how they were voted by other readers. Choosing 'brilliant', for example, will show you the articles other people thought brilliant. How do you digest your news? Do you use your electronics, or are you not yet ready to leave the paper at home? Let us know in the comments below!

News Fire Emblem Heroes First Anniversary Update Detailed by Nintendo

News Fire Emblem Heroes First Anniversary Update Detailed by Nintendo

News: Fire Emblem Heroes' First Anniversary Update Detailed by Nintendo Nintendo Life

Happy birthday, Feh by Share: In celebration of Fire Emblem Heroes' first birthday, which happens on 2 Feburary, Nintendo will release an update to Fire Emblem Heroes for iOS and Android. Quite a bit of information was divulged in this surprise announcement, so without further ado, let's jump right into it.
First Anniversary Present
Nintendo announced all players would receive a first anniversary gift of 50 orbs. For the uninitiated, orbs are the currency used to summon new heroes. Each summon costs five orbs, meaning you get a total of 10 free summons. The first anniversary present will be available starting 1 February and ends on 7 March.
Daily Maps
Beginning on 1 February, daily maps will be available to all players. There will be a total of 25 maps, with a new one being made available each day. The daily maps will be made available in the special m aps area and each map has two difficulty settings you can play; each difficulty grants an orb upon first completion.
Developer Challenge
Beginning 3 February, more teams created by the developers will be made available for players to battle.
Daily Grand Hero Battle Revival
A piece of guest art made to celebrate the FEH's first anniversary by artist Maeshima Shigeki Grand Heroes that have previously left the game will be returning for the festivities, including Xander. Beginning on 8 February, Grand Heroes will begin appearing in maps. Xander's encounter will now have an infernal difficulty level added.
Special Training Maps
FEH is adding special training maps, each of which is designed to allow a specific type of ally to level up. Each day a total of five maps will be made available.
Hero Fest &#160 Legendary Hero Summoning Event
Also coming to FEH is a new Hero Fest. This event focuses on legendary heroes, with a 5% appearance rate, the four heroes this even focuses on are Nephenee, Ike, Lyn and Sigurd.
New Mode &#160 Tap Battle &#160 Illusory Dungeon
The most interesting announcement of the evening came in the form of a new mode for FEH which incorporates a brand new play style, Tap Battle: Illusory Dungeon. In Tap Battle mode, FEH becomes a rhythm game. Enemies approach one of your four on-screen allies in time with music and you must tap the screen just before they attack to dispatch them. The gameplay appears to mimic that of Square's Theatrhythm series which was a hit on the 3DS. Tap Battle begins on 8 February and runs through 22 February.
A Hero Rises &#160 New Voting Event
Last, but not least, Nintendo announced a new event is coming to FEH, beginning 1 February. In the event, players can vote for their favourite hero. Once voting concludes, every player will receive that hero. There was no end date reported for voting. That's all Nintendo announced. It appears they intend to support Fire Emblem Heroes for the foreseeable future, despite the recent death of Miitomo. Are you still playing Fire Emblem Heroes? What do you make of this update, and if you have quit, will this bring you back into the fold? Let us know with a comment below. Related Games Share: Comments ) After watching them completely dump Miitomo (why can’t it function offline after May?), I have no desire to invest time or money into a Nintendo app that might be completely gone and inaccessible in a few years. Not to mention this game is stale and boring compared to actual main series Fire Emblem games. 50 orbs?! Well, time to redownload it! Haven't touched this in ages in favour of just replaying the far more engaging actual Fire Emblems, but that rhythm mode sounds great! I've always wished for a Fire Emblem version of Theatrhythm! One of the few phone games I regretfully paid money into. It's a dumbed down Fire Emblem for sure. I love the art it spawns and the attention for the series it gets, but I despise this free-to-play pay to play more model. The only reason I gave it the time of day is because it's Fire Emblem! I deleted this a week or two ago from my phone. Hadn't played it in months and it's an absolute hog in terms of memory, most apps are around 50MB but this was well over 800MB. Eh, it’s pretty fair for a F2P game. Unfortunately it’s just repetitive and kind of boring after a while. 50 orbs doesn't neccesarily get you 10 summons. When you go to summon, you are presented with 5 hidden choices. The first one costs 5 orbs, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th ones cost 4 orbs, and the 5th one costs 3 orbs. 50 orbs can potentially get you 12 summons with one orb remaining.
The daily maps add 25 maps with 2 orbs each over both difficulty levels, that's another 50 orbs.
However, when you summon from a banner for the first time, you get the first summon free, and a full round would only cost 15 orbs, but only once. With this in mind, and with a Mini tempest ongoing (anouther 42 orbs) and having a warchest of over 200 orbs, I may finally spend some of them. If only I had the space - my barracks are full of Berukas, Oboros and Arthurs that I'm intending to fully 5* merge. I've already done it with Cecilia, and she's one of my most valuable units. The difference between Miitomo and Fire Emblem Heroes is that Fire Emblem Heroes is profitable. I have this in the back of my mind though, so I'm apprehensive about spending real world money on games like this. Nice to see some Heroes news on this site, though I agree with other commenters the game is kind of bland next to the main entries One year already. Maybe "this item" will be finally be "available in your country" for this festive occasion. The game isn't even usable via a sideload since the data download hangs up midway through the bulky 800-something Mb. Even SMR's delay has been dwarfed by now. Still been playing, having lots of fun with it. Game puts Mario Run to shame. Cool 1 year gifts for sure. Feh got robbed of her cake Wait where can I find the art that was shown in the video? Have the artists posted it on their twitter already? Also "Theatrhythm: FEH edition" was totally unexpected xD As expected, Nintendo still is too stubborn enough to make more profit by giving FEH and AC a worldwide release. Way to go Nintendo Mobile. Way to go.. Will this update include removing always online DRM? EA gets ripped to shreds for this, but of course Nintendo gets a free pass. I used around 150 orbs this morning on the new Legendary Heroes: Ike banner without a single 5* unit. That's spectacularly bad luck. I should have had almost 3 units by now. I'm up to 11% chance to get a 5* unit with each summon. I've never spent a penny and won't start now. The 50 bonus orbs tomorrow are appreciated. Ouch dude I'm sorry. I hope the 50 orbs bring ya what ever unit your after =) I remember my last legendary summoning - I was up to 11% as well. I got another Ayra though, and she's pretty handy. FE Heroes is great and I'm happy that the developers are so generous. Not going to look a gift horse in the mouth, even if the monetization model is anti consumer. It's not a game where you have to pay to play more. I've been playing fairly frequently since launch, and I've never put a cent into the game aside from a couple $3 rewards from Google surveys (so technically, I haven't spent any of my own money). I've never felt like I'm being locked out of content because I'm a F2P player. You aren't locked out, but you are limited. It's not as bad since it's mostly a single player game, but you get a huge advantage if you spend money. Many more chances to get your desired characters. I am probably a lot more excited for the Tap Battle mode then I reasonably should be. same I'm kinda sad that all the comments I saw after the reveal were negative because I thought it looked great haha Leave A Comment Hold on there, you need to to post a comment...
Related Articles
Game breaking bugs get squashed Update: Character profiles for all those seen in the trailer Title: System: Publisher: Developer: Genre: RPG Players: 1 Release Date: Nintendo Mobile Official Site:
Related

Newspaper 2 0 Your Guide to RSS

Newspaper 2 0 Your Guide to RSS

Newspaper 2 0 - Your Guide to RSS
MUO

Newspaper 2 0 - Your Guide to RSS
There’s a web technology that can find information on almost any subject on the Internet and spoon-feed it to you. With RSS you can read every article offered by any particular blog.
Table Of Contents

1 Introduction
Three simple words can change your consumption of information, forever. How, you ask? There’s a web technology that can find information on almost any subject on the Internet and spoon-feed it to you. Let’s say that you are obsessed with Justin Bieber and want updates on his whereabouts at all times of the day and night. RSS makes this fantasy a reality; with the right software and subscriptions, you would receive every relevant piece of information immediately following publication, delivered to either your mobile device or desktop. Of course, if you are over 14, you probably have other interests – don’t worry, this technology can work for just about anything. With it you can read every article offered by a particular blog, for example. But before explaining how RSS can help you, let’s first get RSS explained and cover its history over the years.
1 1 A Very Brief History of RSS
The RSS initial-ism originally stood for “Rich Site Summary” (it also was known as RDF Site Summary), becoming rebadged as “Really Simple Syndication” sometime in 2002 upon release of its 2.0 incarnation. The 2.0 version of RSS remains the latest and most popular variant. However, given the recent demise of Google Reader, a revision of the RSS spec might soon come to the fore. Before his untimely passing, Aaron Swartz penned a – while not a final draft, it provides an interesting avenue of development by and streamlining RSS technology. As it stands, RSS provides compatibility with HTML and XML, which gives the format a great deal of presentational flexibility at the expense of bandwidth.
1 2 The Three Objects of RSS
The three things you need before getting started with RSS are RSS feeds, an RSS reader and websites using RSS feeds. Let’s go over all three.
1 2 1 Feeds
Feeds provide the user with access to published content on the web. Once plugged into a reader, an RSS feed subscribes you to that particular web content in the same way that a newspaper subscription provides access to news, to the extent that you receive regular delivery of information. The differences between RSS and a traditional newspaper lie in the timeliness, format and accessibility. RSS feed subscriptions are close to instantaneous, whereas your newspaper arrives sometime after your paperboy wakes up. The electronic, text-based format of a feed also allows for it to be dissected, searched and proliferated in ways that a physical, wood-pulp newspaper never could. However, it is the accessibility of feeds that make it a true newspaper 2.0: provided you have an Internet connection, any device can receive updated RSS content, no matter where you work or play.
1 2 2 Readers
Readers are the second object required for RSS consumption. A reader specializes in opening and turning an RSS feed into text and images. Many kinds of readers exist, both on mobile devices and the desktop. Some readers operate entirely in your browser. For example, Google’s famed, and , RSS Reader operated entirely in your browser and included many advanced features, such as cloud syncing and hotkeys. For example, one could mark an article as read and its status would be saved to the cloud. If the user opened up their reader software on another computer, the read status of the article would persist. Without a reader, an RSS feed would appear as a wall of code, completely incomprehensible to a human being. Fortunately, a vast number of readers exist on desktops, mobile devices and in the browser. Skip to the third chapter for more information on the reader software available, on all operating systems.
1 2 3 Websites
The third core component is the websites providing feeds. Virtually all of your favorite sites, from obscure blogs on Justin Bieber to popular content sites, like ESPN.com, provide RSS feeds – you just need to know to look for them. Even when a site doesn’t; other sites, such as Page2RSS, can create one for you. More on all that later. Together, these three components – RSS feeds, a reader and websites offering feeds – form the core experience behind RSS. Websites provide the content in the form of RSS feeds and readers provide a means of accessing this content. For more information on the kinds of websites that support RSS, skip to chapter 4.
1 3 Similarities Between RSS and Email
The immediate uses for RSS range from providing a magazine-like experience, heavy on imagery and style, to something more akin to Reader’s Digest, an eclectic magazine containing the best snippets of an assortment of sites. RSS’s flexibility relates to the nature of its design. Like email, RSS offers a core technology, around which other inventions revolve. By itself, RSS feeds exists as a XML formatted (which is like HTML) text file, which requires another web technology to use. For example, just as you would use email in combination with Gmail or Yahoo, you would use external software to properly read an RSS feed. RSS simply offers users an efficient means of acquiring raw information from almost any website on the Internet. It does so by allowing content creators to syndicate content automatically. Whenever an update occurs, the information gets pushed out to the subscriber, similar to email. This system of data proliferation allows sites with media as diverse as podcasts, comics, and academic journals (and more) to publish their work once, with their subscribers receiving automatic notice. Prior to its advent and wide adoption, those seeking to receive timely updates from their favorite websites would need to obsessively reload the page, hoping for updates. In fact, most users still check websites daily – a terrible waste of time! RSS automates this, notifying you every time new content is published on your favorite sites.
1 3 1 Open Format
RSS, like e-mail, offers users an open format for information proliferation. However, by itself, RSS appears as an incomprehensible jumble of code. It doesn’t show its true capabilities until used in combination with software specially designed to exploit it. When used with applications like Feedly, RSS transforms into one of the most potent information gathering technologies ever created, outside the NSA’s databases.
1 3 2 What Are Your Preferences
Like email, RSS usage depends heavily on the user’s preferences. Picture an engineer’s needs – she keeps updated on the latest and greatest in materials science as well as an engineering journal. Normally she subscribes to these publications through the same inbox where she receives important personal messages. Because all these messages go into the same email account, unfortunately, her inbox always appears cluttered and disorganized. Fortunately, RSS provides an alternative. Instead, by subscribing to her favorite journals’ RSS feeds, the engineer need only occasionally check her reader to receive timely updates from a variety of sites – and she no longer needs to worry about losing important journal updates among piles of chain emails. Other individuals might prefer to get news and entertainment for their RSS feeds – things like or the . RSS is bound only by your imagination.
1 4 What Kind of RSS Feeds Exist
Currently nine different flavors of RSS float about on the Internet, as well as two different kinds of Atom 1.0, which is the competitor to RSS. These variants do not differ in any substantial manner from one another, though it is worth noting that the two most popular formats are RSS 2.0 and Atom 1.0. However, functionally no difference between the two formats exists and most sites offer an RSS 2.0 feed. Additionally, many RSS readers can also function as Atom readers, which simplifies compatibility. Overall, don’t worry about this too much: just keep in mind that you can use Atom feeds in place or RSS, and vice-versa.
1 4 1 RSS 91 RSS 1 0 RSS 2 0 Atom
RSS has had many different versions since its invention, but three strains today count for the majority of RSS traffic: .91, 1.0 and 2.0. Don’t worry if you see the older versions of RSS, as they are all fully compatible with all readers. On the other hand, a formidable competitor has emerged: Atom. Fortunately, the vast majority of RSS readers can also properly use Atom, so for most people none of this matters.
1 5 Summary of the Rest of the Manual
The remainder of this manual covers RSS’s broad and narrow applications that you, the user, can make use of. Part two of this manual outlines the utility of RSS to general and special interest groups such as students, working professionals and even slackers. The third portion covers how to use and operate an RSS feed within a reader. The fourth part explains RSS’s function within nearly all your favorite websites and how you might use it more efficiently. The fifth chapter covers some methods that you can use to bypass problems in obtaining an RSS feed. The sixth chapter deals with how advanced users can exploit RSS to really improve their news and information aggregating skills. The sixth chapter touches on advanced ways of getting the most out of your feeds. In the seventh chapter I provide additional references and links regarding RSS. Chapter eight covers additional reading that might interest those learning about RSS.
2 Is RSS Useful For Me
So, could you benefit from RSS? Odds are, yes. To demonstrate, I’ve outlined the many uses people from all walks of life could find for RSS. Let’s get started.
2 1 Utility to Working Professionals
Working professionals typically keep up-to-date on a very narrow field of interests pertinent to their field. The more specialized that field, the more likely that the information publishes infrequently and without notification. While virtually all publications with an online presence use email lists, oftentimes these become burdensome and ultimately provide little utility to a working professional. It’s a common complaint among doctors and lawyers that journals get accidentally removed by spam filters or lost among the deluge of emails hitting their inboxes. On the other hand, using RSS can both sort and parse journal feeds. Ultimately, whether or not you benefit from RSS depends on using the appropriate methods in processing feeds.
2 1 1 The Optometrist
While a general practice doctor might subscribe to a variety of medical publications, the optometrist uses just a narrow selection. I interviewed a doctor Andrew Chun on the subject of RSS feeds and how he might improve the efficiency with which he consumes data. The biggest barrier to his productivity is the constant inbox overflow caused by the various medical subscriptions. Another irritant is the difficulty with which he searched through emails for particular medical concerns. As a dedicated mobile user, Dr. Chun prefers receiving RSS feeds on his mobile devices, a smartphone and tablet. Fortunately, his five most useful websites also produce RSS feeds, which are readable on Feedly, a mobile and desktop RSS reader. Because Feedly syncs across devices, Dr. Chun can read an article on one device and it is marked as read across all devices. Dr. Chun’s favorite sites all have RSS feeds: Contact Lens Spectrum [No longer available] California Optometric Association [Broken URL Removed] Doctors and other medical staff may also want to check out Saikat Basu’s .
2 1 2 The Attorney
Josh Maupin, a member of the Kansas Bar Association, prefers checking up on his favorite subjects through his smartphone and desktop computer. He mixes general interest subjects, such as CNN and the Huffington Post, with professional newsletters, which he reads on an infrequent basis. Feedly, again, provides the best solution to his requirements as it offers integration between the desktop and mobile environments. However, he might also benefit from using an offline desktop reader. : The Kansas Bar Association, unfortunately, doesn’t offer an RSS feed. However, it publishes updates through its social media pages, such as Facebook (see section 4.1.1).
2 1 3 The Engineer
Dzuong “Bob” Nguyen works as an engineer, creating medical devices. As an engineer, he keeps up-to-date on the latest in technology by daily checking up on his most useful websites. He uses both mobile devices and the desktop to read up on his interests. However, Bob prefers to avoid mailing lists. Fortunately, his top three sites all offer detailed RSS feeds. EE Times [Broken URL Removed]
2 2 Utility to job hunters
RSS can provide anyone seeking information with both broadly and narrowly tailored information — including up-to-the-minute updates on job availability. Another fantastic feature is its ability to keep abreast of information on the government’s policies toward unemployment.
2 2 1 Subscribing to Job-Finding Websites
Virtually all job-finding websites use RSS feeds. In particular, . Some other major employment websites with RSS feeds are: USA.gov CareerBuilder.com Also try Googling your state employment services website, including the keyword “RSS”. The biggest advantages offered by subscribing to an RSS feed for employment listings is that you receive the information immediately following online publication – as opposed to periodically checking an important website, praying to the gods of the Internet for an update.
2 2 2 Government Websites
Most US state websites offer not just updates via social media, but also through RSS. One of the most critical examples of the importance of RSS to the unemployed would be the fiscal crisis of 2012. Toward the end of 2012 unemployment benefits were set to expire unless the US Congress reached a budget deal. Fortunately, Republicans and Democrats pinched out a deal in the final moments of 2012. Unfortunately, many of the unemployed didn’t know about the impending cut-off of benefits, nor did they know how close they were to losing their benefits. Had more of the unemployed been aware of political issues facing them, they probably would have voted – or voted more sensibly.
2 2 3 Yahoo Pipes Integration
Yahoo Pipes can actually bundle together a huge number of job-searching websites into a “Pipe”. A Pipe is a collection of RSS feeds that have been specially sorted to produce information relevant to your needs. These sorted RSS feeds can be contextually searched for a particular key term. For example, if you were to seek job updates from every single database in the United States, you would simply search through Yahoo’s database of preassembled Pipes. For the majority of possible Pipe configurations, someone has likely already created a bundle of job-seeking websites that permits contextual searching. After finding such a Pipe, you would simply open it and plug your zip code into the contextual search area. It will then output jobs fitting your search criteria, which you may use by copying its RSS feed into your reader. After that, whenever your key term showed up in a jobs posting, you would receive an instantaneous notification on your desktop or mobile device.
2 3 Utility to Students
Many students, college or other, would benefit from updates on subjects pertinent to their field of study — doubly so for graduate students hammering away at their doctoral or master’s thesis. However, because of the diverse number of subjects studied in colleges, an individual might require information from more than one or two different subjects. Some of these sources might be of particular significance to the student’s major or emphasis of study, while other subjects might be of lower priority.
2 3 1 Don t Dump Your Feeds into One Location
The surest way to ruin your RSS experience is to simply dump all of these feeds into your reader, without organization. That’s fine for a small number of feeds, but large numbers of sources require a strategy for consumption.
2 3 2 Organize With Folders
Fortunately, many readers also support means of clustering similar fields into “folders”. Folders can be renamed and reprioritized. For example, if an engineering student wanted to follow three different subjects –such as engineering, geology and dramatic arts– she could create individual folders to manage them. My folders include all the various subjects that I’m interested in, divided by priority and subject. To create a folder in Feedly, click on the Organize link in the left pane in the main Feedly window. Next, drag and drop RSS links into the NEW CATEGORY box, at the bottom of the page. To rename a folder, move the mouse pointer over the category/folder. Then click on the pen icon. A student serious about their field of study would include engineering within a folder labeled “A1 Engineering” which would show up first in his list of feeds. Next, he might include geology in a folder labeled “B1 Geology”. It would show up second. Third, he would put his least important feeds into “C1 Electives”, which he would read casually, or not at all. With the right strategy for organization, students can benefit substantially from RSS feeds.
2 4 Utility to the Casual User
RSS consumption doesn’t need to be all business or productivity oriented. It can also provide a leisurely reading experience similar to Blender or Vogue—as coffee table decoration. The difference between hardcore consumption and entertainment tends to lay entirely in the feeds that one subscribes to and the kind of reader used. For the most part, the majority of RSS readers on smartphones or tablets tend to emphasize appearances rather than the raw consumption and processing of data. Google Currents provides one of the best examples of a visually appealing reader with an elegant interface. Two other examples of extremely well-polished readers would be and Taptu.
2 5 Utility to News Junkies
Users who need a constantly updated stream of information from major news sites can find hundreds of feeds. For example, the and offers not one, but dozens of customized RSS feeds. For example, if you sought only updates on , you would simply subscribe to the specialized RSS feed for that particular column. All NYT publications include an RSS feed. The same is true for almost all major news websites.
2 6 Special Interest
RSS’s true power lies in niche interests. The more narrow and obscure the information, the greater the utility of the RSS feed, since it shortens the delay between when one might check the site and when the information publishes. Three great examples of special interest categories: Your ; video game reviews from IGN; Podcast updates from your favorite show, such as the Joe Rogan Experience Podcast.
2 7 General Interest
For those seeking broad umbrella topics, such as “technology” or “sports”, RSS provides yet again another efficient means of checking up on your favorite subjects. Conversely, most general-interest news sites also offer feeds broken down by the section. So you can grab news content that’s either extremely broad or extremely focused, depending on your tastes. For example, including all its publications as well as specialized feeds for particular sub interests. Virtually all major news sites offer RSS feeds for all its subsections. Some of CNN’s RSS feeds, by subject: Top Stories World U.S. Business (CNNMoney.com)
2 8 Curating Your RSS Feeds

2 8 1 Killing Unproductive Feeds
Like a gardener picking his arboretum clean of weeds, you must regularly remove RSS feeds that no longer capture your interest to keep your reader useable. A key to avoiding a tangled, disorganized and unusable collection is to regularly audit your RSS depository for boring, useless or malfunctioning feeds. To remove an unproductive RSS feed in the Feedly reader, simply click on the organize button at the top left of the screen. Then click on the X next to the RSS feed that you would like to remove.
2 8 2 Folders
Personally, I use folders to separate more productive feeds from less productive ones. For example, in Feedly, I designate folders by two labels: First, by their priority and second, by their category. If a feed is particularly important, it receives the folder “A1”. If it’s a technology related feed, it receives the label “A1 Technology”. This ensures that the folder shows up first in the alphabetized feed list in Feedly.
3 How Do I Use an RSS Feed

3 1 How to Use an RSS Feed
As indicated in the first chapter, RSS feeds require a reader, which is desktop or mobile software capable of reading an RSS feed. Aside from the reader, you will also need the individual RSS feeds from the websites that you follow. For example, if you are seeking to replace an email list, locate the site from which the information originates. Then find the RSS link from the website. When you subscribe to a feed, essentially you will copy and paste the RSS feed’s URL into the reader. Typically, your reader client will include some means of accepting the RSS feed. Once subscribed, as new content publishes, it will show up inside of the reader. Using RSS is dead simple: Collect your RSS feeds. Find an RSS reader. Plug your feeds into your reader. Check your reader.
3 2 Locating the RSS Feeds
Finding the required RSS feeds simply involves going to your site and looking for the RSS icon, or text link displaying the initials “RSS”. While not all sites include a link to their RSS feed, those lacking it are in a tiny minority. Finding the feed for any website, be it a private blog or commercial website, isn’t hard. If you can’t find the RSS link, try visiting the . Go to the FeedBurner, or a , and input the URL of the website that you want content from. FeedBurner will then generate the needed RSS links. Another handy tool is , which includes a vast database of RSS Feeds. However, in the event that all else fails, try Googling the name of your website and the key-term “RSS”. Invariably, this method almost always will lead you in the right direction. Once you have subscribed to the feeds, content will automatically appear in your reader. name of website + RSS
3 3 Finding the Right RSS Reader for You
A huge number of RSS reader products exist on all platforms and hardware, including Linux and OSX. Finding the right RSS reader for your tastes depends on your needs. For example, if you require both offline and mobile access to your feeds, you will want to install two different applications: one that specializes in mobile feed fetching and another that handles offline feed management. Some apps can handle both offline and mobile feed fetching, however. Linux or Mac OS users also have software that exists only on their own platform, in addition to cross-platform software. More or less, however, readers fall into three categories: Browser software, mobile software and desktop software.
3 4 Browser Software
Browser readers are based entirely within browsers such as Chrome, Firefox or Internet Explorer. These require creating an account and, like most RSS readers, they sync with your reader account. Out of the browser-based readers, I prefer Feedly because of its mobile app and desktop interface. However if you dislike Feedly, NewsBlur and FeedBooster offer solid alternatives.
3 4 1 Feedly
Feedly is one of the best RSS readers out there. It offers amazing cross-platform compatibility and outstanding functionality, including mobile apps and browser extensions. MakeUseOf has covered some of Feedly’s new features as well as some tips on how-to optimize your reading experience.
3 4 2 NewsBlur
also supports the iPad, iPhone and Android interfaces. It appears similar to Google Reader in both function and form.
3 4 3 FeedBooster
FeedBooster appears to offer the most features out of all the Google Reader replacements. It includes features such as “contextual filtering”, which allow users to parse their feed streams by date, folder and more. If you want more information, you can read an excellent summary of Feedbooster's features.
3 4 4 The Old Reader
currently only offers a browser-based experience, however it’s said to best capture the old version of reader, which included article sharing. It’s currently in beta.
3 5 Desktop Software
Of the recommended software contained in this section, I strongly advocate checking through MakeUseOf’s directory of RSS software. There’s a vast amount of open-source and free RSS readers available.
3 5 1 FeedDemon
remains one of the most popular desktop clients for reading RSS. Like most desktop readers, it includes such features as folder support, tagging, keyword alerts and podcast support. It is easily one of the best desktop alternatives, although lacking in visual polish.
3 5 2 FeedReader Windows and Linux
received very good reviews as one of the better replacements for Google Reader.
3 5 3 RSSOwl Windows Linux and Macintosh
offers one of the most feature rich offline RSS experiences, along with Google Reader integration.
3 5 4 Other RSS Readers
GreatNews [No Longer Available] Feed Notifier [Broken URL Removed]
3 6 Mobile Software Android iOS Symbian and Windows Phone
So many mobile applications for RSS exist in the various online app stores that a complete list would be impossible. Instead, I present only three for the major mobile operating systems.
3 6 1 Feedly Android and iOS
Feedly’s mobile app, on and , is powerful and aesthetically pleasing. It stands tall above other great software, such as the efficient JustReader and the feature-rich gReader [No longer available]. It’s also totally free.
3 6 2 Nextgen Reader Windows Phone
is widely regarded as the best RSS reader for the Windows Phone operating system, and can sync with Feedly if that’s important to you.
3 6 4 Horus Symbian
Horus for the Symbian operating system is the best in a relative desert of a mobile app environment –Symbian’s not exactly cutting edge at this point. The alternative would be using one of the browser-based readers.
4 Awesome Ways to Use RSS

4 1 Social Media

4 1 1 Stalk Your Friends and Enemies on Facebook
Facebook is among the most popular websites offering RSS integration. You can get RSS for almost any Facebook page that offers notifications, which will greatly cut down on the number of Facebook notifications spamming your email inbox. Nancy Messiah for keeping track of social media websites. Simply go to the and copy the Facebook page’s URL and paste it into your reader. From then on, any website you subscribe to will show up in your RSS feed.
4 1 2 Flickr
Flickr includes an RSS feed for any individual account, based on the URL: https://api.flickr.com/services/feeds/activity/all?user_id=USERID&secret=6PC5p7ygo3VWGAIaTVUHeKMaqSo%3D&lang=en-us& Simply replace USERID in the URL with the number located inside the URL of an individual’s Flickr account. Nancy elaborates on .
4 1 3 Twitter
Twitter can also let you track individual users using the following URL: https://search.twitter.com/search.atom?q=@USERNAME Simply replace “USERNAME” with the user ID of anyone you would like to follow via RSS. You may notice that the particular feed type for Twitter is not RSS, but Atom. Don’t worry: they’re cross-compatible formats. Nancy elaborates on .
4 2 Wikipedia
Wikipedia has perhaps the most in-depth RSS and Atom integration out of all the major websites on the Internet. In particular it offers the ability to monitor particular Wikipedia pages for changes. Check out the .
4 3 E-Commerce

4 3 1 eBay
provides its customers with a very sophisticated method of keeping track of either very specific or very general kinds of information. Their website supports RSS for both auctions and discussion groups. If you are looking for a very specific item, such as a rare magazine or comic book, search for it using . You can turn that search into an RSS feed. To turn a search into an RSS feed, you would only need to copy and paste the URL of a search into your feed reader with “&_rss=1” appended onto the end of any search result’s URL. One of the greatest benefits of this is that you can narrow your search to pinpoint accuracy – for example: it’s possible to search for extremely specific items, such as Justin Bieber memorabilia with values between $5 and $10 containing the key terms “Belieber” and “Swag”.
4 3 2 Amazon
Amazon keeps a variety of tagged RSS feeds for particular products. For example, if you were looking for the most popular sci-fi products on Amazon, you would plug the following URL into your RSS reader: https://www.amazon.com/rss/tag/sci-fi/popular Simply look for the orange icon with the label “RSS feed” on any product listing. The URL will then show every single sci-fi related product as it is listed on Amazon. You can find a . For more ways to exploit Amazon, and pull down awesome deals, check out .
4 3 3 Craigslist
Craigslist functions in a similar way as eBay – all searches can convert into an RSS feed simply by adding “/index.rss” to the end of any URL. You can then copy and paste the modified URL into any feed reader. Craigslist provides a function that eBay doesn’t, however. It can also aid individuals seeking employment. Simply search for the relevant key term and add index.rss to the end of the search results.
4 3 4 Etsy
Crafts website Etsy produces four primary kinds of RSS feeds – those that track individual shops, publicly available favorites, member curated “Treasury” lists and Etsy blog feeds. To track individual shops, simply type in the URL: https://www.etsy.com/shop/SHOPNAME/rss Insert the shop’s username in place of “SHOPNAME” in the URL. For publicly available favorites, use the following URL: https://www.etsy.com/people/USERNAME/favorites/items.rss Or: https://www.etsy.com/people/USERNAME/favorites/shops.rss Again, you will replace “USERNAME” with the target business’s username. For the Treasury feed, check out: https://www.etsy.com/treasury/rss For Etsy blog feeds use the following directory of the various kinds of available RSS subscriptions: https://www.etsy.com/blog/en/feeds/
4 4 Search Engines

4 4 1 Bing
Bing can easily create customized RSS feeds based on Bing searches. Simply copy and paste from a Bing search and add “&format=rss” to the end of the URL. For example, searching for “Belieber Fan Club” creates the following URL in Bing: https://www.bing.com/search?q=belieber+fan+club&go=&qs=SC&form=QBLH&pq=beleiber+fan+club&sc=1-17&sp=1&sk=&format=rss
4 4 2 Google
Google also offers customized searches, although not on the same level as Bing. Essentially, to generate an RSS for Google, you must use Google Alerts. Simply navigate to , input your search criteria, and output as an RSS.
4 5 Deal Hunting Websites
MakeUseOf covered both before — between the two sites, some of the best deals on the internet can be found. Combining these two sites with RSS , it’s possible to score explosively good deals – with RSS functioning as the catalyst.
4 5 1 SlickDeals
The deal-hunting site, SlickDeals, offers a large number of RSS feeds linking directly to forum discussion. These often involve one or more SlickDeals members not only making posts, but also discussion between members on how much value these deals provide. Some forum topics cover particular broad categories of deals, such as on electronics. Other feeds cover more specific subject material, such as price mistakes or particularly “hot” deals.
4 5 2 FatWallet
to SlickDeals. Among my favorite FatWallet feeds are its “” deals.
4 6 Reddit Integration
Every possible Reddit page also includes an RSS feed. Simply by adding “.RSS” to the end of any URL on Reddit will allow you to insert it into a reader, such as Feedly. However, many readers actually support directly inserting Reddit links without the .RSS appendage. I prefer to subscribe to Reddit topics with a relatively low volume of publication. In particular, the “Most Popular” Reddit sub includes only threads that reached the front page – these typically have greater quality than simply going to Reddit’s front page and hitting F5 to refresh it.
5 Trouble-Shooting Problems

5 1 No RSS Link
Getting started with RSS first requires that you visit each of the sites that you plan on following to obtain its feed URL. However, not every site will overtly offer an RSS feed. Fortunately, some sites allow you monitor site updates using browser extensions and web services. To read more information on the various ways of checking a website without using an RSS feed scanner, check out .
5 1 1 Update Scanner
is a Firefox extension that allows you to monitor any webpage for updates. This is particularly useful for older sites that haven’t caught onto RSS feed technology. To use the extension, simply install it and when you find a site that requires monitoring, right-click on it and select “scan for updates”.
5 1 2 ChangeDetection
allows the user to automatically monitor a website for any changes made. The service actually makes a distinction between changed and unchanged text, displaying both together for comparison. For keeping track of website changes when RSS is unavailable, ChangeDetection is an excellent service.
5 1 3 Page2RSS
is web app that will convert any website into an RSS feed. It’s both easy to use and highly flexible, including functionality with Twitter, as well as a Google Chrome extension. To use Page2RSS, simply cut and paste the URL of the webpage that you would like to monitor. Page2RSS will output an RSS feed, which you can plug into your reader. For more information: The MakeUseOf Answers section .
5 2 Inserting RSS into Your Blog or Website
For those of you with personal websites, consider adding an RSS feed to it. As I’ve mentioned earlier, everyone with a Blogger or Wordpress account already has an associated RSS feed. To reach it, simply append /RSS to the end of your website’s URL. You can then plug it into your favorite RSS reader.
6 Tips for Advanced RSS Users

6 1 Yahoo Pipes Integration
Yahoo Pipes provides a very sophisticated form of RSS aggregation. Yahoo Pipes aggregates feeds by combining them into a single RSS link, which you would subscribe to using a reader. However, aside from aggregation, Pipes’ possible uses reach extraordinarily complex proportions – to use Yahoo Pipes to the fullest requires an understanding of web development. However, Pipes’ most basic functions only require brief description and explanation. The three most useful functions are: Feed aggregation, keyword filtering and preassembled Pipes. Here’s an excellent article covering .
6 1 1 Aggregation
Yahoo Pipes, as the name suggests, provides a means of aggregating multiple RSS feeds into a single feed. For example, if you wanted to create a single stream of information containing only the photos from a Flickr photo-stream, Pipes can configure to aggregate hundreds of Flickr users’ published material into a single RSS feed.
6 1 2 Keyword Filtering
Pipes can also filter RSS streams for particular keywords. For example, if you sought information on refinancing your house from a large number of economic and finance blogs, you could configure a Pipe to only output results including the term “refinance”. Pipes would then only give you results relevant to that particular term.
6 1 3 Preassembled Pipes
Yahoo allows its users to share preassembled Pipes. These run a gamut of varying forms and functions. For example, one Pipe gives users the ability to search through all within a specific zip code. Another Pipe allows users to search through deal-hunting websites for particular items. The Pipes database is quite extensive and I highly suggest browsing through it for ideas.
6 2 IFTTT Integration
One could write a full-length novel about the various ways that . Essentially, IFTTT is a web automation system revolving around “triggers”. A trigger causes the service to activate. In regard to RSS, IFTTT can configure to send alerts to you whenever a particular keyword trigger shows up in an RSS feed. This can keep you current on sales, new product releases and more. The following sections list of some of my favorite IFTTT recipes.
6 1 1 eBay
allows you to do a great many things – my favorite is the ability to receive SMS notifications whenever a particular item you’re searching for shows up as an auction. Some other great eBay recipes will remind you of a and sends email reminders whenever eBay Deals become available.
6 1 2 Amazon
Some of the better recipes for Amazon include whenever a “Top Free MP3 Album” reaches the Amazon feed. One great recipe whenever a new book is added to the “Top 100 Free eBooks” list. Another great when updates occur.
6 1 3 Craigslist
Ever want to get the best price on a locally sold item? Fortunately, IFTTT offers . Whenever the thing you’re looking for shows up on Craigslist, you will receive instant notification.
6 1 4 Deal-Hunting
Another task IFTTT with RSS excels at is deal-hunting. A variety of IFTTT recipes integrate with RSS feeds from social media sites. These recipes .
6 1 5 Feedly Integration
Feedly created a list of IFTTT recipes, which essentially turn Feedly into the king of all RSS reading services. One of its best recipes service, . Another amazing recipe is its integration with , which automatically . View a complete list of .
6 3 Browser Integration
Several browser plug-ins allow a more instantaneous methods for interacting with, and manipulating, RSS.
6 3 1 Firefox
If a website lacks an RSS feed, you can use an extension such as (formerly AlertBox). Distill Web Monitor is a Firefox and Chrome browser extension that monitors portions of a website for changes. Whenever new material publishes, Distill shoots off a notification to your inbox. While this doesn’t technically count as an RSS-related service, it does offer a similar function to an RSS feed.
6 3 2 Chrome
A variety of extensions for the Chrome browser will allow you to monitor RSS and Atom feeds with ease. A Google software engineer created , which allows the user to monitor RSS feeds directly from the browser.
6 4 FeedBurner
FeedBurner provides the backbone for many web publishing feeds. You can find many sites’ RSS feeds by going to the site and inputting its URL. This is one of the best methods of finding hard-to-locate RSS links.
6 5 Full Text Services
While a powerful tool for acquiring timely information on any subject, RSS does suffer from a unique limitation – web sites can abridge the RSS feed, forcing the reader to click over to the ad-bloated main site. While this happens to help generate add revenue for a site that you use, it can sometimes cause the user a degree of inconvenience and irritation. Fortunately, a variety of services exist that can turn a shortened RSS feed into a full-text version. These services essentially copy text and images from the main site and reconstruct a full article in your reader. On the downside, full-text services always include an ad at the bottom of the feed and sometimes cause formatting errors or produce incomplete copies. Still, for most RSS feeds, full-text services provide a time saving mechanism that can provide a great deal of improvement over an abridged feed.
6 5 1 Readability
Readability [Broken URL Removed] optimizes the appearance of web pages for smartphones and other limited-screen-size readers. Its primary function saves articles from your desktop for consumption later. Another major feature is that it can pull the full-text from a website, without you actually having to go to the website. Some reader services combine RSS with the Readability service – from your reader you might read a complete article, without the clutter and ads from the website of the text’s origin.
6 5 2 Instapaper
offers a similar service as Readability, stripping the text and images from a website and republishing the full content, which you can access from your reader. It’s important to note that Instapaper is also its own reader, which can be found in all online marketplaces.
6 5 3 Five Filters
Five Filters simply converts any RSS feed to full-text. Just copy the URL into Fiver Filters’ copies content from the host site and sends it to your reader’s inbox.
6 5 4 Wizard RSS
performs the same service as Five Filters, except in my experience it has proven more reliable for converting websites into full-text. However, it doesn’t offer the filtering characteristics of other services.
6 5 5 Feed Rinse
Feed Rinse provides a similar function as the other full-text services, except it specializes in filtering content for specific keywords. You can configure the service to extirpate feeds containing keywords that you aren’t particular interested in.
6 6 Folders
Some RSS readers, but not all, support the use of folders. As mentioned in chapters 2 and 3, folders provide powerful organizational support for sorting your RSS feeds. Most major RSS readers support folders, including Feedly.
6 7 Hot Keys
Another handy feature is hotkeys. A hotkey provides a shortcut to a particular function – one feature that I find handy is the “mark all as read” hotkey “CTRL-A”. By pressing the key combination of CTRL-A, you will mark all articles in a particular folder as read. This is particularly useful for low-utility feeds, with high amounts of published content. MakeUseOf published a which possesses broad applicability amongst the majority of RSS readers. For the most part, these are universal hotkeys. Using hotkeys will greatly improve your data processing efficiency.
6 8 Content Discovery
Before Google yanked its Reader’s discovery feature, Google Reader allowed its users to share interesting RSS links. This combination created a devastatingly powerful content discovery tool: Users were recommended links from other users, with similar interests and tastes. Its removal was a dark day, indeed. Fortunately, Feedly recently added a "Must Read" feature, which recommends reading material in a similar manner as Google Reader once did. In its current form, the "Must Read" feature offers users both a visually stunning interface and a high degree of efficiency. You simply mark an article as "Must Read" and Feedly will begin making recommendations to you based on your preferred RSS content. To get started with "Must Read" for Feedly, first, copy and paste your favorite feeds’ URL into the Search feature in the upper-right hand side of the Feedly interface. Next, check the "Must Read" box before hitting the "Add" button.
7 Conclusion

7 1 In Summary
RSS truly is the best way to consume online content efficiently. RSS represents the future of newspapers – one might say it’s the 2.0 version. To get the most out of it, however, you will need to find the right reader to read your website’s RSS feeds. Then, for advanced users, you will want to use various online tools to maximize the efficiency of RSS delivery. Once the bugs of any efficient feed have been ironed out,
7 1 Future of RSS
After Google’s murder of its reader service on July 1st of 2013, the future of RSS appears to be undergoing a massive reorientation. No longer does a single service dominate the marketplace. Rather, have shown up on various online stores, from Apple’s App Store to the Google’s Play Store. However, it’s worth noting that two companies appear to be making waves in the RSS world.
7 1 1 Digg
Digg announced in the middle of June 2013 that it was rolling out a replacement service for Google Reader [Broken URL Removed]. It’s not much of a prediction that Digg has been looking for content since losing a great deal of market share to Reddit. Digg’s upcoming service will likely attempt to resurrect Google Reader’s much loved “share” feature. Because of stiff competition from Feedly, it remains to be seen whether or not Digg will be able to force its way into RSS ecosystem. I am, however, confident that Digg will create something worth using.
7 1 2 Feedly
For many of its users, Feedly functions as one of the best Google Reader replacements. Feedly allows full importation of your feeds and folders from Google’s service. And, with some minor settings modifications, the service offers a seamless transition. Feedly combines many of Google Reader’s most useful characteristics, such as hotkeys, with a slick and highly polished user interface. It also recently announced a migration of all feed hosting onto its own servers, meaning you can search through a vast database of feeds for particular keywords. To read more about Feedly’s various functions, check out its Firefox integration and "Must Read" section for its mobile application. Feedly’s new feature make it a killer RSS reader service.
8 Additional Reading

8 1 Original paper on RSS 0 90
For those of you who are history buffs, you can read the that was published by Netscape on March 15, 1999.
8 2 Aaron Swartz s entry on RSS 3 0
In 2002, Aaron Swartz penned a 3.0 specification for RSS. You can read the original document . For those of you interested in the subject, RSS was not invented by Swartz – he however had a role in creating the 1.0 specification, according to .
8 3 Additional Information on Yahoo Pipes
For those of you interesting in learning more about Yahoo Pipes, I strongly recommend watching the Yahoo Pipes YouTube channel. The best source for Yahoo Pipes tutorials is Dawn M. Foster’s blog, . News Diddy Kong Lookalike Stars In Upcoming Switch Release Toy Stunt Bike Tiptop s Trials

News: Diddy Kong Lookalike Stars In Upcoming Switch Release Toy Stunt Bike: Tiptop’s Trials Nintendo Life

Monkey business by Share: on During the Nintendo 64 era, was a game many owners of the system cherished. Diddy Kong himself was known as being the face of the release, sporting his trademark red cap and singlet, and competing against a number of his friends from Rare’s games library. With the chances of a revival incredibly unlikely at this stage, it doesn’t look like Diddy Kong will be tearing up the track again anytime soon. At least we can rest easy knowing his lookalike wearing a top hat is having fun in another universe. To ease the pain, Wobbly Tooth has announced will arrive on the Switch eShop in Japan on 23rd August. We’re not sure who Tiptop is - perhaps a distant relative of TipTup the turtle who also starred in Diddy Kong Racing back in the day. The yellow and blue colours associated with the bike and rider are also reminiscent of a particular bear. Overlooking this, Toy Stunt Bike is similar to the series, requiring the player to overcome a series of obstacles on a bike. The was released on the 3DS in 2014 and featured a human rider. Take a look at the game’s trailer above and tell us in the comments if you’re keen for some dirt bike action on the Switch. [source ] Related Games Share: About When he’s not paying off a loan to Tom Nook, Liam likes to report on the latest Nintendo news and admire his library of video games. His favourite Nintendo character used to be a guitar-playing dog, but nowadays he prefers to hang out with Judd the cat. Comments ) This looks really... “interesting”. This hurts to look at. I'm offended are you saying all monkeys look alike? Not sure how to feel on this one. Credit where credit is due to the developers for being bold enough to move from a realistic character style from past releases to a more anthropomorphic style like that of Diddy Kong Racing. Being such a classic racing game, it's exemplary of the developers' good taste, if nothing else! "News: Diddy Kong..." thats where you stop right there. Stop getting our hopes up for clicks. Sigh To be fair, you can’t fault NL for folks not reading a complete headline If this has a turtle and/or bear, I’ll be waiting for an article about a C&D letter. Or maybe this monkey is there because of...circus animals? Dang. Desperate for clicks? Cartoon monkey looks like another cartoon monkey a little. Let's click bait to make people think it's a rip off.its not, just slow news and "journalists" gotta get hits to stay relevant Exactly how high could your hopes have gotten before reading the very next word? idk man it just feel kinda cheap to put "diddy kong" as the first 2 words of your article that has NOTHING to do with diddy kong When it comes down to it, Diddy Kong is just a sort of monkey and you could argue any monkey in a game is possibly made to resemble him. I’m just here to say no Still waiting for a more realistic racing game on Switch. Third party support has improved with the Switch, but admittedly it still has a ways to go. Oh well, let's hope V Rally is a good one. Looks fun, if only it support joycons with HD rumble. If any other games on Switch games didn't say "Wii Shovelware," then this'll probably get your attention. Looks like an iPhone game, and not a great one. I for one am relieved that TipTop cleared the toilet bowl.... I remember playing the normal Toy bike on my ipod, it was pants then and to be honest still looks awful. Looks nothing like Diddy. A character doesn't look like Diddy automatically just because it's a monkey ya know. That monkey looks like a cheap Diddy knock-off. Wobbly Tooth, huh? Nice cloning of RedLynx' Trials gameplay and Nintendo/Rare's Diddy Kong characters. What an uninspired studio.
The real thing, Trials Rising, is coming soon anyway. This monkey game here could be good enough to warm up. I think it looks terrible. It's both a disgrace to both the Trials Series and to Diddy Kong Racing. If I'm going for a cartoony version of Trials, I'll stick with Joe Danger I played the original version 'Toy Stunt Bike' on the 3DS, it was surprisingly fun for the price (<5 dollars i think) and i ended up 100%ing that game within a couple days. This looks like a solid improvement in visuals and stability although very similar in content.
I recommend giving it a go if you havnt played the 3DS one, especially if it's as cheap as chips. News On Nintendo Switch SNES Controller Stock Expected This Month North America

News On Nintendo Switch SNES Controller Stock Expected This Month (North America) Nintendo Life

More on the way? by Share: Update (Fri 14th Feb, 2020 16:30 GMT): After reappearing online for a terrifyingly short amount of time towards the end of last month, the official SNES controller for Nintendo Switch has once again been completely out of stock for the last couple of weeks. If you missed out last time, you might want to keep an eye on ; at the time of writing, the product listing reads "This item is currently unavailable. Please check back for more news in February 2020". Hopefully, then, we'll have more stock headed our way in the coming days. Let us know if you manage to secure your own with a comment below. [source , via ] Share: About Ryan can list the first 151 Pokémon all in order off by heart – a feat he calls his ‘party trick’ despite being such an introvert that he’d never be found anywhere near a party. He’d much rather just have a night in with Mario Kart and a pizza, and we can’t say we blame him. Comments ) The Canadian shop still shows as out of stock... Remember when we thought we would have a GameCube virtual console Still showing out of stock I don't know if I should grab one just yet as I don't have an online subscription since I'm waiting for more games. As of now, the ones I really want are still not there (DKC2 and DKC3 come to mind). Is it worth it to pre-emptively get a controller in hopes of those games eventually coming out or just wait til the games come out first then buy the controller? Already out of stock? Come on! I just tried in Mobile and Desktop, and it keeps saying "Out of Stock - check back Jan 2020 for news." While these are nice, have limited functionality outside the Switch online service. The 8bitdo SN30 pro is a better choice, Im so glad I buy it. You can’t buy one if you don’t have an online subscription. The retro controllers are a subscriber-only bonus. Yeah, sorry, as cool as it looks, I already got myself an 8BitDo SN30 Pro+. Sorry, Nintendo, but you're not getting money from me, that's what you get for not having a good amount in stock. They were available for about an hour. Nintendo Life was just late to the party Aaaand they're gone!
You need a NSO subscription to purchase a controller. oh yeah? damn, looks like we have to wait another 3 months again lol An active Nintendo Switch Online subscription is required to purchase this item. Biggest requirement before anything happens...... I still haven't given up hope I watch every single Nintendo Direct with anticipation expecting (more hoping) for some kind of Gamecube announcement. Maybe one day I was literally just looking for one of these on the UK store this morning, it does say they'll be back in stock soon so I just bought the NES controllers for the time being The NES controller pair that was on sale for $30 + shipping was a good deal... And it's by far the best way to play NES games. But the SNES controller is well replicated by many other controllers... it took a year to get from NES games to SNES games. They’re gonna make us waaaaait. Let me get this straight. They announced a product in, what, October? They sell out in less than an hour. It takes them 2+ months to get more inventory. And they only get enough to last another hour of sales?!?! I love Nintendo, but I would not even expect a startup to fail so hard at supply chain, let alone a manufacturing veteran company! How is it in any way possible for such a company to continuously fail in their supply chain so completely?! there is a single old master smith who has been entrusted upon a high mountain to individually forge the SNES controllers one at a time. Each plastic shell had been folded 1,000 times to ensure that Nintendo seal of quality means something again. "Out of stock" Yfyficyfjg This is honestly so depressing. they know the demand is there, yet sell out so fast... Not yet still says check in jan of 2020 "This item is currently unavailable" Nintendo... this is pathetic. How can you not manage to make a simple SNES controller available? I have never once seen it in stock since it has been a thing. This isn't some super complex thing we are talking about here, it's a 90's style controller for the Switch. There is no excuse for it being this hard to buy. This just reflects very poorly upon them at this point, like they are incapable of making their products available. GET ON IT! Damn, Oh well wait for the next restock. Shame Nintendo allow people to buy upto 4 and you can buy them even if on the free trial. The US variant is the only one I don't have yet. But I do agree with people who say get an SN30 (Pro is better option as it has sticks, all the buttons and gyros for a Switch) from 8BitDo. It's just nonsens. How hard is it to make them available? Oh, come on! I have been checking back on this thing daily and they still manage to run out again while I sleep? Dammit, Nintendo! I'm logged in with my valid Nintendo Network ID linked to my Nintendo Switch Online account and there's still just the standard "Out of stock, check back in January 2020 for additional information." Well it's the second-last day of the bloody month and there's no new info and no "Add to Cart" button. Geez. *EDIT I should say I'm on the Canadian shop so this must be yet another example of Nintendo Life not realizing that North America is THREE BLOODY COUNTRIES because this might only be available in the U.S. European version is not available either. Your answer is honestly the only good thing about this mess. Well done! How pathetic Nintendo... Unbelievable, Nintendo. How hard is it to stock a freaking SNES controller? And why is the limit 4 per My Nintendo account when the NES controllers limit was 1 per account? yeah I never thought that we’d get GameCube games. At that point you’re reaching games Nintendo can easily remake individually and sell for full price. N64 was already pushing that. Yeah, it’d be cool to have access to that library, but I would never hold my breath for it. That’s approaching the sort of collection PlayStation Now has and that’s $60 a year for JUST those games. If Nintendo was going to make the GameCube library accessible on Switch, that’s make more sense to be an entirely different subscription service. That would be a lot of meaty content. Nope, not in the US either. Either NL is making stuff up just to get us worked up, it's a Mexico-only thing, or Nintendo managed to ship 30 to NoA for sale at 4:00AM PST on a Wednesday night. More likely they found a box of prototypes in Reggie's old closet and decided to sell them off. Even the single old master could do more than that. Unless they're each hand-made by Sakurai. He can only make 5 per year in his spare time between playing every single Fire Emblem game in an endless loop while working. I'm stil hoping for that and an N64 version too
Idle hope it may be. “This is why I can hate rose-tinted nostalgia; people are willing to buy 4 of these and scalp the 3 of them. I wish @NintendoAmerica just let us order these anyways and deliver once they have enough of them.” #SuperNES #NintendoSwitchOnline That happens to be my Twitter right now. "This item is currently unavailable. Please check back for more news in February 2020." These are tempting, but I think 8bitdo might offer better alternatives. Well dadgum, I had this on my wish list and have checked the website every day. Didn’t even get an email about them on sale. do you have 8bitdo? From the pictures it seems to me the right analog stick is to close to the buttons. Curious if you have played with it and if you feel that is a problem. This article update, so far, seems to be completely untrue. I would much rather have virtual console like the Wii U... just better emulation on the games I picked mine up a few months ago. Perfect for games like Hollow Knight and Celeste. A must buy for any switch owner. Out of stock. Never even got a notification from them despite it being on my wishlist. Yeah I haven't seen anyone who managed to order one today lol. It's like they just had some flash sale that lasted less than a minute or something. As if they only produced about 100 or so controllers then they were all like "that's it everyone, we are all sold out for another 100 days!" Wanted one of these so badly... they’ll probably announce that they’ve restocked on Feb. 29th, and go back out of stock again... Crying myself to sleep tonight. You’d think they’d automate it by now, or at least hire more smiths. Seems like it sold out while I was sleeping. This is beyond annoying... like the others said, how hard is it to keep these controllers in stock??? I really, really, really wanted one of them. I wish they would at least let us special-order the SNES Switch controller while they're sold out, that would've been nice. I might have to resort to an alternative... If only gaming companies that have trouble predicting demand for inventory could develop a method by which they could take orders for items pre-production so they know the quantity to produce in advance to fulfill the waiting orders. Some sort of system by which to "pre-order" things, I suppose you could call it. That would be useful. A whole lot of BS being played here and if your NIN online subscription expired No Purchase. I've never actually used one other controllers, but from what I've seen and heard in reviews by people like Spawn Wave and Rerez, they're high quality.
There are also ones that don't have analog sticks and still work with the Switch as well as computers and certain smartphones. Aesthetically, there are still some slight differences, but they're still very close and they look like a good alternative if you can't get the official ones from Nintendo. Just buy an 8bitDo controller instead. Which has the layout of the SNES controller, but all the other buttons you might need/want for modern gaming and you can use it with every other platform under the sun! are these even good? Just checked and... out of stock, come back in February. Maybe they could temporally limit sales to 1 or 2 controllers an account until the stock is stable. No thanks, I'll stick my 8bitdo Wii/Gamecube adapter and SNES Classic controllers. Does make me wonder (searches Ebay), Just as I suspected. I haven't tried, nor care to but apparently they are out of stock. Same, i don't know why people are so keen to get these. I would love that as an added option. Having access to so many NES/SNES games on the apps is great, but I’d love to buy some to keep forever. maybe because they actually work and don't need 3rd party dongle to connect. I still find the original 8Bitdo SNES30 controllers to be the better alternatives to these.
The games alone right now are already worth the 20 bucks a year let alone the classic controllers. As for DK 2 and 3 it will be coming. I will bet they will wait until close to the new DK game which I personally think will be announced this year. I grabbed the official NES pair when it was on sale for $30 since I don't think anyone is making anything close and that price is unbeatable anyway (although shipping was high and SLOW). Still undecided if I am going to try to grab an official SNES or an 8bitdo... or none and just use the Switch Pro. The size of GameCube files itself might have something to do with it, the average size for GC games is 1.4GB (uncompressed) while NES/SNES games are tiny in comparison. So a GameCube service could potentially take up a lot more space on the Switch's limited internal memory. But I'm also still hoping we get them eventually... the price is a little on the high end for me. Spawnwave's review wasn't too great for the nes/snes controllers. im not totally convinced yet; at least not at the current price or the last year sale price. This artificial limited supply strategy is a really dumb idea on Nintendo’s part. They know people want these, they know people will people will pay for them so why do they insist on fleecing their customers this way? They did the same thing with the NES and SNES classics. It’s absurd. Make a steady amount of these products and everyone goes home happy. How is this such a difficult concept for the Big N? This controller is a joke and if it does become available again this month, it'll likely be at the 11th hour on the last day of the month...just like January. And then we'll see a message that says "Check back in March 2020 for more information." And knowing Nintendo this pattern will repeat every month for the remainder of the year. I can't believe they can't actually keep these things in stock. Somebody should lose their job over this because it's just complete gross negligence at this point. Nintendo don't like money, they've done this for past 30 years, fans still haven't figured it out yet. My 8bitdo Pro + sometimes misreads the up and down. I do not understand why so many dpads this generation have that problem or similar. Also not sure why this article was reposted, you're saying zero new in the update part of it. Clickbait? Must be, literally are saying nothing new. I still say these updates are click bait of the worst kind. There has been absolutely no proof shown that they were available last month. None. Seeing that coronavirus has slowed down production of Nintendo's products, I don't think the idea of "artificial limited supply strategy" holds any real ground. Maybe they wouldn't sell out so quickly if Nintendo limited purchases to 2 per account instead of 4. People are selling these for $130; that's $100 more than what Nintendo sells them for.
So for each account someone makes, they can make roughly $400 off of these things. Cut those scalping profits in half, Nintendo! Only if you have a active subscription of which mine has lapsed. What a drag.... Exactly, at this point Nintendo is just trolling everyone with this controller. Nintendo loves helping others make money instead of them. They are very kind. The wireless communication, maybe? I've only cracked open Nintendo's own Pro Controllers and Right Joy-Con, can't really speak to the quality of 8bitdo's contacts and circuit boards. I think they should just go vc with it That particular model is not that much easier to find on a trusted site. Why doesn't Nintendo just offer pre-order options? Afraid not as many people will try to buy them if it puts them on a waiting list? because at this point they are Stupid.... they are not the same quality heh. I agree. Nonsense. Had I to really get a controller that resembles the SNES one, I'd buy a 8bitdo SF30 Pro, so that I can use it on normal Switch games and with a good vibration too. The only reason I would consider getting the NES ones is because the NSO service currently doesn’t allow you to remap the buttons. After playing Super Mario Maker 2, I can’t go back to strictly using only the A and B buttons. Rare holds the rights to DKC1, 2, and 3. If Nintendo wanted to, they would have to negotiate with Rare to put them on the service. In the meantime, I have all three on the SNES Classic Edition. I've 100% given up on these. How about, like, more SNES games, more often? You sure about that. If you truly thought that to be true, how come Rare can't release those games on Rare Replay? Strange, I only have DKC1 on my SNES Classic. Yeah that would be the ideal solution but sadly I can't see that happening anytime soon either. I bought an 8bitdo SN30 Pro+. Best controller I've ever had. Easily the best 3rd party controller I've ever used. It's like if a SNES controller made sweet, tender love to a Dualshock 3. If not a mention in the article, at least a private "thank you" would have been nice for bringing this to your attention. No biggie, just weird to see this the day after messaging NL with no response. OK, take care. Well, Nintendo still gets the money, but they're encouraging people to use their products to make even more money off of total suckers. I was one of those suckers when I bought a second NES Classic controller for $40. can't say i want something manufactured in china right now until the whole virus thing gets under control... that's called giving misleading stop trying to make something that isn't something. Then one shouldn't drive or use electricity because it causes pollution. That's the very mindset why one digs their own hole. Look up ModMyClassic.com, and you can install a piece of hardware known as hakchi2 CE. You'll get your results. I have no idea what you just said or how that is misleading. Distribution centers have been testing positive for the virus. I'm saying I, as in myself, do not want to run a risk. You do what you want but I don't recall giving false information.
Don't be that guy. edit: also work on your english. So pissed off at Nintendo’s stocking issues on this item. I only want two. Hmmm, great controllers but with 2 SNES games added every 3+ months it's a no from me. I know they can be used with many other titles but it just doesn't seem right. With Nintendo going to the effort to release these controllers the games need to be released at a much faster rate. Hi there! A colleague brought this to my attention yesterday after spotting it on Nintendo's site. With how flooded our inbox is each day, we simply hadn't got around to seeing your message yet and ran with the story ourselves. I assure you we always provide credit when using tips, and thanks for sending yours in regardless. Fair enough my man, I appreciate the comment. Keep up the good work! More on the way? Why are the journalists asking us when they should be telling us if more are on the way? That's the only controller I ever use in Super Mario Maker 2, it's much more accurate than the d-pad in the Pro controller or the 8bitdo SN30 and it seems to work just perfect with that game, control-wise. But, I still wish it had rumble and a home button. giving misleading information is giving misleading information. Sounds like you have bias against anyone with China origin and that makes you even sadder. Also how one types and respond is their word of choice. Giving out Misleading information will be called out. I have quite a few chinese friends. Two are like family to me. Do not insult this or throw random racist slander on no basis whatsoever. Grow up kid. edit: Actually, done giving you the light of day. You're just pulling this out of your butt for the sake of it i'm sure. Back in stock for anyone looking to buy! I finally bought mine today. I was out of town the first time they went on sale, so I missed it. Then, I went out of town again the 2nd time too. So I missed them both, as they were out of stock both times by the time I got online. This time tho, I was online, and kept refreshing the page for days, until it finally popped up as available. So I got mine this morning. Finally. No it's the actual pad. It's not the worst, but it happens. You can force it to do it to prove it isn't some kind of input lag. News Of COVID 19 Vaccine Causes Nintendo Ubisoft And Activision Share Prices To Drop

News Of COVID-19 Vaccine Causes Nintendo, Ubisoft And Activision Share Prices To Drop Nintendo Life

World could return to normal by spring next year by Share: Image: Nintendo Life 2020 has been a pig of a year, thanks mostly to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic which has forced much of the world into lockdown and claimed the lives of over a million people. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel following the news that pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and BioNTech have come up with a vaccine which is in treating the virus. Some are optimistically predicting that the world could even start returning to normality as early as , which is fantastic news. Of course, one side effect of a pandemic which forces millions to remain indoors is that people have had more time to play video games, and that's had a positive impact on the commercial fortunes of multiple companies, . So the news that the enforced lockdown is coming to an end was predictably met with a rather negative reaction on the stock market, as share prices for Nintendo, Take-Two Interactive, Ubisoft, Activision and even fitness firm Pelaton and video calling company Zoom all took a slight dive. news: (-9.38%), (-6.86%), (-7.25%), (-7.10%), (-5.94%)- Briefing.com (@Briefingcom) It's worth noting that almost all of these companies have seen their share value stabilise since the drop, but the reason for the wobble is pretty plain to see – the world is about to get back to normal, and that means that indoor pursuits like video games are going to see a drop-off in terms of sales. [source ] Share: About Damien has over a decade of professional writing experience under his belt, as well as a repulsively hairy belly. Rumours that he turned down a role in The Hobbit to work on Nintendo Life are, to the best of our knowledge, completely and utterly unfounded. Comments ) Ugh, the stock market is so absurdly reactionary. Wishful thinking, if you ask me. Vaccines take years to put in the market for the general public and there's good reasons for that. This is just the stock market being dumb. The vaccine news was way overhyped - I mean it was based on only 89 cases of Covid in vaccine subjects. Good vaccines don't stop Covid they make it much more mild and brief. So you need many thousands of brief mild Covid cases in vaccine test subjects across all genders, ages, and ethnicities, to be able to say you have a good vaccine. We're still a long way from when a good safe proven widely effective vaccine is given to billions of people. Once investors realise these basic facts gaming stocks will go up again. They'll have a shock when they realise people still play video games regardless of whether an option to go outside exists or not The stocks of certain industries are over inflated right now, including Nintendo’s. These will stabilise sooner or later. The issue in the long term is gonna be more about job losses, economic downturns and stock market crashes which will cause way more trouble for Nintendo and the like moving foreword (sorry to be a downer). But hey, at least we can all hide in bunkers and play on our Switches while the world burns. PS A 6%-9% drop in stock prices isn't slight. For healthy companies with large market capitalizations those are relatively large drops for investors. So Microsoft didn't drop? So they're concerned about fewer people stuck at home to play videogames and not, say, more people being in sufficient health, spirits and income conditions to buy and play videogames. Haha — there is nothing like "world returning to normal". COVID changed world already and is just a little period of big and fundamental changes humans need to undergo. "Hey Joe, when you are done with COVID, please come over and check out the climate change, polarised nations, inequality of life quality in the world or any other serious topic." But I am not saying that games won't persist. Just returning to normal is not real. 1. Stock values represent investor habits and hardly correlate (sometimes contradicting actually) with scientific advancements.
2. I am all for a suitable vaccine, but given the low accuracy of the antibody testing thus far I don't have much faith in a rushed vaccine for COVID. Vaccines aren't typically effective against pathogens that mutate quickly within populations, hence why the influenza vaccine must be constantly updated and still has a rather low effective rate.
Microsoft and Sony are the least likely to drop considering they're launching new systems this week. I won't be having one. I hope they don't force people to have one by saying you have to in order to go to work. That's so wrong. Governments can't be trusted, let a lone with a vaccine that's been rushed through. God, the world is broken... Money money money... But they tested on almost 44,000 people, not 89? All stocks are all over the place the last 24 hours, US seems to have gone down but EU seems to have gone up. Everyone is panicking and stocks are just rich man's betting ground That’s the vaccine President Trump spearheaded. Dude, I totally agree. Was happy to read your post. "2020 has been a pig of a year" Hey, there's nothing wrong with pigs. Leave them alone. I find it funny that they'd assume the world will "go back to normal" soon, when, in the case Trump's lawsuits change nothing, Biden confirmed he wants to extend the lockdowns again. We aren't getting "normal" back if Biden steals this election. Bit crazy how there's a vaccine already. There's no vaccine for AIDS, for example and that has been around for a long time with LOTS of money and research put into it. Not too keen on that tbh. i don't trust a vaccine that was made in less then a year(6 months to be exact), remember the AIDS and cancer vaccine that after 20/30 years of development is still not ready to be used, why trust a Vaccine that is complete in less then a year? and Stock Market react to almost everything that happen in the world, after all the investors/Shareholders want to make sure they money is in good hands. Bill GAteS is goINg to puT a chIp in the vaCcine SO wE all bUY XBOxes!!! FAcT! thE BIDEn crime fAmILy HaS SHAres in MICRosofT its alL ConNEcted! based. Maybe the powers that be will just give everyone a shot of Vitamin C and stop breathlessly reporting every case? I'd almost be fine with it if it meant we could have human connection again. Well, it couldn't last forever, could it? The trouble with connecting dots is when you have enough of them, you can make anything you like appear. Aids is a much more complex situation, not nearly comparable to a Corona virus. This comment sections makes me want to delete my account here causation does not equal correlation Microsoft gaming revenue is 5% of the company so no reason for them to fall by this Just make sure the vaccine has ZERO effect on anything to do with my vital man parts. Video games aren't the only things that are fun And spring is still half a year away. And who knows how readily available it will be. And you just know people are going to start to relax and be reckless. Even this articles wording is a bit irresponsible. LOL at the conspiracy theorists on here. Get a life, please. Please do not feed the trolls, everyone. Epidemiologists say it can take another six months for production and distribution to get the vaccine to the general public, so maybe late spring early summer. Medical staff/frontline workers get it first this winter. (If anyone wants to hear how they are making covid vaccines quickly & safely, Bill Nye's podcast, Scinece Rules!, Sept 29 episode called, "Dude, where's my vaccine?" explains it. duration 27 min. It's entertaining, not as dry as you might think.) ...Cancer literally can't have a vaccine. It's not a virus. And to our current knowledge, a vaccine will never work for HIV due to the nature of the virus (though that won't stop people from trying. Try comparing it to the Influenza vaccine, which is usually completed in around 9 months to a year. Don't see people complaining about that (well except the idiots who think it's a conspiracy) Your entire thesis has been debunked multiple times by reputable scientific sources. Please stop spreading disproven conspiracy theories, especially on a gaming site. yes i aware of this, but i still have found very suspicious how this vaccine is complete in less then a year, most vaccines take 20/30 years to be developed and completed, at least 5 years to make this kinda of vaccine. i see, but i believe one day, they gonna develop a Vaccine that can cure people of AIDS(even with severals things pointing up this is very hard to do, like you said). Joao Doria the State Governor of Sao Paulo(brazil), where i live is trying to make the Coronovirus vaccine obrigatory to everyone here, this link exactly to what you have said about the vaccine of Coronavirus. Satellites will be next, when all realise the earth is flat. I didn't read the title. I just saw astral chain and thought 'sequel?' You can prevent cervical cancer with a HPV vaccine. But your point is well made. I mean, we are back to normal here pretty much and have been since April because we closed our provincial borders off to the other Canadian provinces and it worked really damn well. I got to enjoy a normal summer and got to see whoever I wanted to. Had people listened and worn masks and been less selfish this would have been over a lot sooner. I feel you. It is just ***** depressing. : Thanks for the tip. I'm assuming this is the Bill Nye the science guy. I'll take a listen. Btw, many of the comments are on point about a vaccine. This is going to take much longer to get out there due to ongoing safety research, and then eventually manufacturing enough for a world population. Why does anyone expect normality ever again? Yes the vaccine will come and yes it will take a time to roll out and then what? We have the flu vaccine since 80 years and yet people still are dying from it, and about the same amount as from COVID and so noone really bothered. What will change exactly with COVID vaccine?
And I'm not even talking about long term studies and (side)effects yet. Yeah but if you have none it just as bad. You DO know that at least the Great Reset part is public knowledge right? Ever read into Agenda 2030? How do you think they want to achieve all of this in less than 10 years. If you really want reputable sources and care a little bit about your future you really should google up Klaus Schwab from the international economy forum. He lays it out very plainly and easy to understand to where this trip is going. No conspiracy at all. Completely openly available information. This comment section.... Wait, there's an option to go outside?!? Maybe I'll have to try to unlock that achievement after I've cleared a few more games off of my backlog. So what, obviously people are upset about the thing that affects all of our lives in a major way.
It's hard to have a sane conversation about this topic, because people always get shamed and ridiculed ONE way or the OTHER. Which is sad. All hail capitalism the lord and master of western society! Dissent is not tolerated! I appreciate all the Trump supporters volunteering to demonstrate their stupidity. My Ignore button has been idle lately. EDIT : You don't find the Ignore button cathartic? The entire medical establishment is overtaken by people who resort to magical thinking. Papers and journals are full of it. Fascinating. Do you have specific examples? Good to know, I will change my investment strategy based on your information, NL. Thank you! Pretty sad that the stock market is reacting negatively to good news. Capitalism > human lives, I suppose. Investors freak out about a news announcement. So normal day on the stock market yea? I welcome sane conversation. Covid-19 is a serious topic and has affected almost everyone the world over in different ways. The problem is, sane conversation is hard to come by on most of the internet. Some of these comments are roping politics into an article where they aren't even mentioned, thus I don't feel they're appropriate here. Cue those who feel differently about aspects of that subject, sometimes with thoughtful remarks, sometimes with intentionally inflammatory ones. Eventually it often turns into a proverbial screaming match where both (or multiple) sides are yelling at each other at the top of their lungs while plugging their ears. I've interneted enough that I know the signs. Very little to no productive discourse can occur in such situations. So I nope out of them. It's normal for humans to disagree; one is hard-put to find someone who agrees with them on every subject, thing, position or idea. Respectful disagreement is fine. But shutting down an opinion of another, slapping them with all sorts of labels due to a single opinion, and/or subsequently ignoring them just because they don't conform to the positions and/or echo chambers of another is wrong in my book. There is so much more to a person than just where they stand on a single issue. (Edit: I'm not pointing fingers at anyone in particular here; this stems from my own observations over time with multiple people and groups.) Are we really talking about COVID-19 on a Nintendo fan website? Wow I can't believe Trump supporters talk about cheating when the man himself was far from innocent. , the Stock Market is neither a benevolent or malevolent entity. It's just guessing that because of the vaccine that more people will be spending more time/money on outdoor activities, so businesses largely focusing on mostly indoor activities, such as gaming, won't be worth as much as they are now when people are staying indoors more. On the flip side, companies that focus on outdoor recreation will probably have their stock prices improve on the news of the vaccine. I'm being very cautiously optimistic with this announcement by Pfizer. Emphasis on the cautious. Even if they got a working vaccine, it needs to be certified as being entirely safe, then mass produced (in this case, mas-mass-mass produced), distributed, administered, and I haven't even touched on the impact of anti-vaxers. So no, I don't realistically think we're a few months away from "normal". Covid did not force anyone into lock downs; governments did that, and they have been extremely detrimental.
Anyone who wants to go into lock down could do so voluntarily. Governments forced people. Lockdown got me gaming again.
That's all I have to say on the matter. Yup, Bill Nye the Science Guy All you said, I can agree with whole heartedly. Thank you for that. Very well put. It'll go back up due to other reasons. No biggie. For instance, when they realise that "getting back to normal" by spring using the mass vaccination of a potentially unlicensed vaccination is most likely logistical impossible. That is in production bioengineering terms. This is coming from a healthcare pro. Oh, and I advise ppl to use the ignore button where you feel you should (embarrassing in places eh?) I presume you are in the Atlantic bubble as well? You really want to know how a vaccine acts when someone gets coronavirus. Only 89 got coronavirus. The thousands of others didn't. Glad I'm not into the stock market. I’m highly skeptical of this vaccine because they come up with it in a short space of time but yet years and years have been put into a cure for cancer with little results That’s because cancer is not one disease but many. For example, cancer of the throat has a different profile (on molecular, biochemical, progression levels, etc) than, say, cancer of the liver. And even then one person’s skin cancer may be different than another person’s skin cancer. Cancer really is the emperor of all maladies. Well the sticks enjoyed a huge increase at the start of it all so it's really just the markets resetting themselves And thank you for remaining civil. Stay safe! Market shares are so toxic LMAO Yep haha, NB Cool! I'm over in NS Ya and when people outside of the bubble hear about it they think we are lying, I tell them no we were just smarter and don't like dying. I always do! Thank you, same to you. Newscaster Says Superman Is Her Favorite Marvel Hero While Quoting Spider-Man
TheGamer

Something New

Newscaster Says Superman Is Her Favorite Marvel Hero While Quoting Spider-Man
A Dallas news anchor was talking about Comic-Con when she said her favorite Marvel hero was Superman, then quoted Spider-Man. via ResetEra.com A video of a Dallas news anchor went viral on Wednesday, when she claimed was her favorite hero, and then proceeded to misquote him, using a famous quote instead. "With great power comes great responsibility", quoted WFAA news anchor Cynthia Izaguirre, after mentioning that her favorite Marvel hero was the Man of Steel. Anyone who is a fan of Spider-Man will recognize that famous inspirational quote from Peter Parker's Uncle Ben, and not from Superman. Not only was the quote never spoken by Superman, but the hero belongs to , not Marvel. Yikes. In Izaguirre's defense, she is most likely tasked with talking about a large handful of stories each week, and coming up with entertaining dialogue each and every day while getting every single fact straight at the same time is probably harder than it looks. Still, to any fan of superheroes and comic books, the mistake she made certainly warranted a chuckle. THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY Before the blunder, Izaguirre was covering the auctioning off of costumes from a few of Marvel's recently cancelled shows, including Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. The three shows, especially Daredevil, received fairly high critical acclaim, and massive amounts of popularity. Daredevil's season 3 currently sits at an impressive 97% fresh on , and was considered by many to be one of the greatest superhero television shows of all time. Unfortunately, Netflix's rights on the Marvel properties are expiring, and everything with Marvel's name on it will soon be exclusively available on 's new streaming service, Disney+. via WFAA.com Despite not having a perfect track record when referring to superheroes, Izaguirre has made some pretty admirable to the city of Dallas, TX, and is very popular amongst her viewers. She frequently produces and anchors news segments, called Wednesday's Child, that focus on finding safe homes for children who have faced abuse and neglect. She is also on the Board of Directors for TexProtects: The Texas Association for the Protection of Children. She has dedicated her life to protecting the vulnerable youth in her community, so it's safe to say she's earned a pass for misquoting Superman.

'The Problem Child' was supposed to face Tommy Fury in August at Madison Square Garden. However, the fight has seemingly been put on ice due to the Brit having issues gaining entry into the United States. With the bout being off, it seems that the 25-year-old has moved on to a new opponent. Paul is now reportedly facing Hasim Rahman Jr., a heavyweight prospect who is mostly known as the son of former Heavyweight Champion Hasim Rahman. Jake Paul () is finalizing a deal to fight Hasim Rahman Jr., the son of ex-heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman, in place of Tommy Fury, per Jake Paul () is finalizing a deal to fight Hasim Rahman Jr., the son of ex-heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman, in place of Tommy Fury, per To this point, 'Gold Blooded' hasn't lived up to his father's success. However, he is still only 13 fights into his career, as he currently holds a 12-1 professional record. Rahman Jr.'s last outing was a knockout defeat to James McKenzie Morrison earlier this year. Most importantly, it is important to note that Rahman Jr. is a heavyweight. While he's not a huge -sized fighter for the weight class, he's still never fought below 220 pounds in his career to this point. Meanwhile, Paul has never fought above cruiserweight. As of now, it's not clear if the fight will take place at heavyweight or cruiserweight. Regardless, Paul will likely be a smaller fighter for the first time in his career on August 6 if he faces Rahman Jr.
Have Jake Paul and Hasim Rahman Jr fought before
Jake Paul and Hasim Rahman Jr. have never fought each other in a professional capacity. However, the two have had battles in the gym. Prior to the YouTuber's fight with in November 2020, Paul brought in Rahman Jr. to train and help assist him. Following training camp, the heavyweight was quite complimentary of the 25-year-old's skills, and seemed to gain respect for him. Once rumors emerged that Rahman Jr. would step in for Tommy Fury, many fans were quick to note that he's trained with Paul before. However, sparring is not a fight, and it's clear that if they fight in August it'll be much, much different. As of now, it's not confirmed if Rahman Jr. will indeed be the replacement for Tommy Fury in August. However, it seems to be trending that way. If he steps in, there's no doubt that the fight will be intriguing and be a massive pay-per-view bout. Poll : 0 votes Quick Links More from Sportskeeda Thank You! We all want to take titles off Roman Reigns. We all want to be The Guy. That's what we want, that's why we're here," revealed Corbin. "If you don't want that, you shouldn't be here. That's the bottom line. I've been here for quite a while now, and I am yet to get my hands on that title. It's still like the dream, the goal." Baron Corbin has been one of WWE's most dependable talents in recent years, but could he add an elusive world championship to his resume soon? Only time will tell.
#2 Thunder Rosa comments on possibly facing Sasha Banks in AEW
Sasha Banks features once again in today's roundup, which is the least surprising considering the speculation about her future. The 10-time champion is one of the most established female stars in wrestling, and many feel she could also be on her way to All Elite Wrestling. Thunder Rosa is more than ready to welcome Banks into the company but also sent out a fierce warning to The Legit Boss. The reigning AEW Women's Champion said she was not afraid of Sasha Banks and would be all in for a dream match between the two. "I mean, of course, everybody's gonna come for whoever's on top, right? I'm the biggest prey any predator comes after, and I'm ready man. I told you, I'm not afraid of nobody. If Sasha wants – if 'The Boss' wants some from La Mera Mera, she got it, she got it coming. Hell yeah. That's how I do," revealed Thunder Rosa during a virtual signing with The Asylum Wrestling Store. [H/T ] Whether Sasha Banks chooses to join AEW is a separate topic altogether, but a proposed bout against Thunder Rosa sounds like a tempting prospect for Tony Khan to potentially explore.
#1 Reactions to Dave Hebner s passing
WWE is saddened to learn that long-time referee David Hebner has passed away.

WWE is saddened to learn that long-time referee David Hebner has passed away.
